Free State Policespokesperson Capt Loraine Earle said the arrests, which were effected today, form part of the mandate of the Unit in the government’s ongoing efforts to root out corruption at all levels of the public service, including within law enforcement.

The arrests stem from an incident reported in Harrismith, in which it is alleged that on 5 March 2025, the two officers visited a liquor store in Harrismith and falsely presented themselves as officials from Bloemfontein, claiming they were conducting an inspection to verify the authenticity of the liquor being sold. After completing their so-called inspection, they allegedly threatened the business owner with arrest and demanded a R5 000 bribe. The complainant indicated she only had R2 500, which the officers accepted before leaving the premises.

The case was reported and handed to the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit for investigation. After completion of the investigation, the docket was taken to the Director of Public Prosecutions for a decision, who gave clear instructions to arrest and charge the suspects.

The Provincial Commissioner of Police in the Free State, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, has reiterated her firm stance on corruption. “We will continue to fight corruption relentlessly. If those involved are from within our own ranks, we will not hesitate to take decisive action. No one is above the law, and we remain committed to ensuring accountability and upholding the integrity of the SAPS.”

Both suspects, two sergeants aged 44 and 45 respectively from Bethlehem Public Order Policing Unit, are currently in custody and are expected to appear before Harrismith Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 13 June 2025, on two counts of corruption.
