They are demanding that government must intervene urgently to reduce the energy tariff.
Numsa Spokesperson, Phakamile Hlubi-Majola said that they are marching to the office of the Presidency of the GNU Cyril Ramaphosa because the matter is serious that it demands the highest level of attention.
T
he demands include that government cannot fail to give this sector a 62 cent electricity tariff when they have an abundance of coal which is the strategic mineral.
“Numsa further calls on government to nationalise the industry by taking ownership of shares in the smelter sector and it must make sure that workers also have a stake so that government does not complain about the billions it will be losing as a result of delivering this 62 cents competitive electricity tariff.
“This will make this industry to be competitive and profitable and our government will benefit on behalf of the people, from dividends and it will generate revenue through tax. Workers will also benefit from the sweat and toil of their labour, by benefitting out of the labour they produce,” she said.

Moshe Kgatla joined Glencore Lydenburg Smelter as an electrical apprentice in 2014. In March 2015, he was seriously injured after jumping into a moving hot charge car — an incident outside his work area. He was found negligent and dismissed the following year.
Although the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) initially overturned his dismissal and replaced it with a final written warning, Glencore later terminated his learnership, saying his disability prevented him from continuing. He received a permanent disability payout.
Kgatla challenged the decision multiple times, returning to the CCMA in 2019 and later filing a review application in the Labour Court. But the court ruled that he failed to take the necessary steps to move his case forward, leading to it being archived and treated as dismissed.
Acting Judge Grace Mafa-Chali noted that Kgatla had the opportunity to have the matter set down for hearing but failed to act within the required six months.
As a result, his application for reinstatement has been denied.
