The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng led a picket today outside Premier Panyaza Lesufi’s office to demand criminal charges against all those implicated in the looting at Tembisa Hospital, as well as a speedy process to sell off the assets of syndicate kingpins so the money is directly returned to assist hospital patients.

I handed over a memorandum with the party’s demands. I was accompanied by the DA Constituency Heads for Tembisa, Refiloe Ntšekhe MPL and Khathutshelo Rasilingwane MPL.

The DA’s memorandum calls for the following:

1. A speedy process to sell off the seized assets, so money is directly returned to assist hospital patients.

2. Criminal charges against all those implicated in the looting, regardless of their high positions or political connections. The evidence for asset forfeitures should be used to criminally charge Mr Hangwani Maumela and others instead of waiting for the SIU final report.

3. Justice for Babita Deokaran – this means finding and charging the mastermind who ordered her murder, as well as suitable protection and honour for whistleblowers who expose wrongdoing.

4. Widen the investigations to include procurement at all Gauteng hospitals.

5. Public disclosure of all findings, and timely report-backs on the implementation of recommendations.

6. Comprehensive reform of procurement processes to prevent further stealing and ensure that money is spent cost-effectively to improve healthcare.

7. Fire Health and Wellness MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko. She allowed former Chief Financial Officer Lerato Madyo to resign with her pension money instead of being disciplined for suppressing Babita’s exposure of suspicious contracts at Tembisa Hospital. We need a new MEC who will effectively break up the corruption networks and replace all the cronies with competent and ethical people.

See submitted memorandum here.

The corruption is far wider than Tembisa Hospital, and it needs to be rooted out. The reality is that people die when health money is misappropriated on such a massive scale.

Premier Lesufi must stop the stealing and start the healing!

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng marks International Day for Older Persons, which exposes the Gauteng Department of Social Development’s (GDSD) failure to protect senior citizens in care facilities, which should be sanctuaries but are instead danger zones and sites of neglect. The DA demands that Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi hold this department accountable for this systematic failure affecting the elderly’s well-being.

Replying to questions posed by the DA, the MEC for GDSD, Faith Mazibuko, revealed that 263 elderly abuse cases were reported to the department by concerned citizens, NPOs, family members and victims themselves between January 2020 and June 2025. She further indicated that 18 of these abuse cases originated from various residential centres, with 25 identified perpetrators being caregivers.

These figures are shocking and illustrate a disturbing reality regarding the treatment of people who should be enjoying their twilight years in safety and dignity, but are neglected, mistreated, and abused, often at the hands of those entrusted with their care. Furthermore, these figures demonstrate the department’s failure to properly vet caregivers for our elderly, ensuring they possess the appropriate demeanour and knowledge for their care.

A society is as good as how it treats its most vulnerable; by these standards, Gauteng is not on the right track. The DA will engage MEC Mazibuko to determine measures being taken to ensure the safety of our senior citizens. We want to know what is being done to maintain their safety and welfare, and where possible, criminal cases should be opened against the perpetrators.

A DA-led Gauteng Provincial Government would ensure stronger oversight, enforcement, and widespread public education to foster respect, protection, and care for the elderly in our province. In the interim, we will continue to hold the department accountable, ensuring that none of our elderly are betrayed by the very systems meant to shield them from harm.
