African football has been hit by big shock as a president of a football association has been sentenced to life in prison.

Latest reports suggest that Congolese Football Federation (Fecofoot) president Jean-Guy Blaise Mayolas has been handed a life sentence.

The ruling marks one of the most severe legal crackdowns on football administration on the continent.

This follows a high-profile investigation into the financial management of the federation.

The court found Mayolas guilty of a series of severe financial crimes that have reportedly crippled the development of football in the Republic of Congo:

Money Laundering: Funneling federation funds through complex channels to disguise their origin.

Embezzlement: Misappropriating funds intended for national teams and infrastructure projects.

Forgery and Fake Documents: Creating fraudulent records to cover up the missing capital.

This ruling sends a massive warning to football administrators across the continent.

While corruption allegations in football are not new, a life sentence for a sitting FA President is an unprecedented escalation in the fight for transparency.

US President Donald Trump has ordered the early release of former investment manager David Gentile, who had only just begun serving a seven-year prison sentence for fraud. Gentile was released less than two weeks after reporting to prison, according to federal prison records.

Gentile, the former chief executive and founder of GPB Capital, was convicted last year for his role in a long-running scheme that misled thousands of investors about the performance of the company’s private equity funds. Prosecutors said more than 10,000 people were affected.

His release marks yet another instance in which the president has stepped in to reduce sentences for individuals convicted of white-collar crimes.

Gentile was found guilty of securities and wire fraud in August and sentenced in May. His business partner, Jeffry Schneider, received a six-year sentence and remains in prison.

At the time of the sentencing, prosecutors described GPB Capital as a company “built on a foundation of lies,” accusing it of earning more than $1.6bn by using money from new investors to pay returns to earlier ones.

While prosecutors labeled the operation as a Ponzi scheme, the White House now argues that the justice system under former President Joe Biden mishandled the case. Officials say investors were told that their contributions might be used for distribution payments and that this transparency undermines the fraud allegations.

The administration also pointed to Gentile’s claims that false testimony was used during the trial.

Although Trump reduced Gentile’s sentence, the commutation does not erase his conviction or eliminate other penalties he may face. Since beginning his second term, the president has pardoned or commuted the sentences of several people convicted of tax, securities, wire, and healthcare fraud. Just last month, he issued a pardon to Tennessee state House Speaker Glen Casada, who was convicted of fraud, conspiracy, and money laundering.

Two co-directors will face each other before court on an alleged fraud case.

According to the report at
the disposal, the two directors co-owned two companies. Investigation revealed that the two co-directed two companies registered in 2011 and 2013, respectively.

Mpumalanga Policespokesperson Lt Col Mabongiseni Nkosi the two co-directors allegedly tried to apply for an overdraft in 2023 to boost the second company that was registered in 2013. The bank could not approve the overdraft as the company was not financially stable.

It is alleged that one of the directors, a 43 year old male, proceeded with the application shortly, submitting falsified documents, overstating the profit, and understating SARS liabilities. As a result, the R1 million overdraft was granted by the bank due to misrepresentation of documents.

After irregularities were picked up, the matter was referred to the Hawks Secunda based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation for further handling.

A year-long investigation provided suspicion that the suspect intentionally submitted falsified documents for his benefit.

The team comprised of the Hawks Secunda based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation, Serious Corruption Investigation, and Serious Organised Crime Investigation arrested the suspect on 02 May 2025. The suspect was arrested in Brackenhurst outside Alberton in Gauteng.

The suspect is expected to make his first court appearance before Evander Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 05 May 2025.

The Acting Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation in Mpumalanga Brigadier William Mokonyama welcomed the arrest. “We have the dedicated team on the ground that are committed to get to the bottom of every criminal activity and bring the perpetrators behind bars for justice to prevail,” warned Brigadier Mokonyama.
