Conflicting international reports have emerged regarding the family of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, following alleged Israeli and United States military strikes.

Unverified claims circulating on social media suggest that Khamenei’s daughter in law may have been killed during an airstrike targeting a compound linked to the Supreme Leader. However, there has been no official confirmation from Iranian authorities regarding these reports.

Earlier claims that Khamenei himself had been killed have not been substantiated. At the time of publication, there is no confirmed statement from the Iranian government verifying his death.

Officials in Israel have not publicly confirmed the specific details of the alleged operation, while the United States has also not released a formal statement confirming the claims circulating online.

According to various international analysts, if members of Khamenei’s immediate family were indeed killed, it would mark a significant psychological escalation in the ongoing conflict, potentially altering the political and military dynamics in the region.

The situation remains fluid, with information evolving rapidly. Independent verification is still required to confirm the accuracy of the reports surrounding both Khamenei’s status and the alleged deaths within his family.

People in Japan are toughing it out in the snow to vote in a quick election called by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. Polls suggest her coalition is set to score a big win.

This is the first winter election in 36 years—Japan usually picks milder seasons for this. But Takaichi wanted a fresh mandate right after nabbing her party’s leadership.

Surveys predict her Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) teaming up with the Japanese Innovation Party could grab up to 300 out of 465 seats in the Lower House.

It’s a comeback for the LDP after losing their long-time ally and majority due to scandals and high living costs.

After two previous LDP prime ministers quit amid tanking popularity, Takaichi has stepped up as a crowd favorite.

She’s winning folks over with promises of tax breaks and subsidies. Critics wonder if more spending will really kickstart the slow economy, especially with Japan’s sky-high government debt.

Her personal appeal might give the LDP a boost, but the snow could keep some voters home, particularly in the north and east.

Early voting turnout was about 4.6 million, down 2.5% from 2024, blamed on the weather.

Places like Niigata saw heavy snow, with trains, ferries, and flights canceled. Even Tokyo got a rare dusting as people headed to polls.

Takaichi, a fan of Margaret Thatcher, aims to be Japan’s “Iron Lady.” She’s close to the late Shinzo Abe’s circle, pushing strong defense and nationalist ideas.

Despite her old-school views on family and gender, she’s hugely popular with young voters aged 18-30. Her approval ratings have stayed over 70% since October.

She’s built a massive social media following, with 2.6 million on X. Her campaign video hit over 100 million streams in under 10 days.

At 64, she’s sparked “Sanae-mania”—her black leather tote sold out, and her pink pen went viral.

This sociologist notes that Japanese politics has been run by older men forever, so a woman leader feels like a fresh change.

But some doubt her popularity will fully carry over, since it’s a parliamentary vote with many scandal-tainted male LDP candidates.

The party got hit by a fundraising mess since 2023, leading to resignations and probes.

This election’s a risk for Takaichi, with her old ally Komeito now teaming up against her in a big opposition group.

Another challenge: selling voters on spending plans without worsening Japan’s debt issues.

Her policies might give quick help to families, but they skip fixing low productivity and flat wages.

Plus, she’s strained ties with China by talking tough on Taiwan defense, hitting a low in relations.

Meanwhile, she’s cozying up to US President Donald Trump for steadier alliances.

Trump even endorsed her recently, which is unusual for a US leader.

The Freedom Front Plus has strongly criticised the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) for ordering Israel’s chargé d’affaires to leave South Africa within 72 hours, warning that the move could harm the country’s diplomatic and economic interests.

Party leader Dr Corné Mulder described the decision as another example of what he called the ANC’s unilateral approach to foreign policy, which he says does not serve South Africa’s broader national interests.

The Freedom Front Plus said it was taken aback by DIRCO’s decision to declare Israeli diplomat Ariel Seidman persona non grata. DIRCO claims the decision followed what it described as repeated violations of diplomatic norms that allegedly challenged South Africa’s sovereignty.

According to DIRCO, Mr Seidman used official Israeli social media platforms to post insulting remarks about President Cyril Ramaphosa and failed to formally notify the department about visits by senior Israeli officials to the country.

However, the Freedom Front Plus questioned these claims, arguing that the officials in question were in South Africa in their personal capacities and that the allegations lack substance.

The party also raised concern about the timing of the decision, noting that South Africa’s relationship with the United States remains fragile. Israel is a key US ally, and the Freedom Front Plus believes DIRCO’s action could be seen as provocative and damaging to broader international relations.

The move, the party said, continues a pattern of ANC-driven decisions taken without consulting other partners in the Government of National Unity, despite foreign policy not being the sole domain of one party.

The Freedom Front Plus further suggested that the expulsion may be linked to the earlier removal of South Africa’s ambassador to the US, Ebrahim Rasool, describing it as possible retaliation.

With critical decisions on AGOA still pending, the party warned that such drastic diplomatic actions could put trade relations, investment and jobs at risk during an already difficult economic period.

The Freedom Front Plus has renewed its call for urgent consultation within government and a more balanced, pragmatic and fact-based foreign policy that prioritises the interests of all South Africans. The party says it will continue engaging President Cyril Ramaphosa on the matter.

The South African National Defence Force has confirmed that it will host a multinational naval exercise involving BRICS Plus partner countries in January 2026.

The exercise, titled Will for Peace 2026, will take place in South African waters from 9 to 16 January and will include naval forces from China, Russia and Iran.

According to the SANDF, the joint drill is focused on maritime safety, interoperability and the protection of shared sea routes rather than combat operations. “Exercise Will for Peace 2026 brings together navies from BRICS Plus countries for an intensive programme of joint maritime safety operations, interoperability drills and maritime protection serials,” said Brigadier General Nditsheni Singo, Acting General Officer Commanding Joint Operational Headquarters of the South African National Defence Force.

He added that the exercise reflects a collective commitment to strengthening maritime cooperation and shared operational procedures in support of peaceful maritime security initiatives. The announcement comes amid political debate within South Africa over the country’s foreign policy posture and military cooperation with global partners.

Government has previously stated that South Africa follows a non aligned approach in its international relations and engages with multiple global blocs. Defence officials have emphasised that multinational military exercises are routine and aimed at skills development, coordination and maritime security rather than signalling political alignment.

A Florida gubernatorial candidate has announced plans to divest state funds from Israel bonds if elected, sparking debate over foreign policy, investment ethics and state level authority.

The candidate said the proposal reflects a reassessment of Florida’s investment strategy and its alignment with broader political and ethical considerations. The announcement has drawn criticism from pro Israel organisations and political opponents, who argue the move could damage long standing diplomatic and economic ties.

A Florida gubernatorial candidate speaks during a campaign appearance

Supporters of the proposal said state governments have a responsibility to review where public funds are invested, while critics warned that divestment could carry financial risks and strain relations with a key United States ally.

Israel bonds have historically been viewed as a stable investment and a symbol of US Israel cooperation. Financial analysts noted that any divestment would need to be assessed carefully in terms of legal obligations and fiduciary responsibility.

The proposal has become a focal point in the Florida election campaign, highlighting broader national debates around foreign policy, economic engagement and the role of state governments in international issues.

The Democratic Alliance has raised concerns over South Africa’s planned naval exercises with Iran and Russia, warning that the drills could weaken the country’s stated foreign policy position of nonalignment.

The exercises are expected to take place in early 2026 and involve joint maritime operations between the South African National Defence Force and naval forces from Iran and Russia.

The DA said participation in such drills sends conflicting signals about South Africa’s diplomatic posture at a time of heightened global tensions and increasing scrutiny of international alliances. Party representatives argued that South Africa should avoid military engagements that could be interpreted as taking sides in geopolitical conflicts.

They said the country’s foreign policy should prioritise peace building, neutrality and respect for international law, rather than actions that may be viewed as endorsing controversial state actors. The Department of Defence has not yet released detailed information on the objectives or scope of the planned exercises.

Government officials have previously defended joint military drills as routine engagements aimed at skills development, interoperability and maritime security. Critics however say the timing and choice of partners raise legitimate political and diplomatic questions. South Africa has repeatedly stated that it follows a non aligned approach in its international relations, maintaining ties across different global blocs. The debate around the naval exercises highlights ongoing tension between government policy and opposition concerns over South Africa’s global positioning.

AbaThembu King Buyelekhaya Zwelibanzi Dalindyebo has sparked a national storm after returning from a high-profile visit to Israel and launching a fierce attack on the African National Congress and the South African media.

Dalindyebo Explodes After Israel Trip: Blasts ANC and Media

The trip, hosted by Israeli Foreign Affairs Minister Gideon Sa’ar, included meetings with officials in Jerusalem as well as visits to areas near the Gaza border. The king’s delegation reportedly toured the Nova Festival site and a kibbutz attacked during the events of 7 October 2023.

“Someone must love Israel”

Speaking at a fiery press briefing on 5 December, Dalindyebo said he travelled to Israel out of a desire to support the country at a time when he believes South Africa has adopted an overwhelmingly anti-Israel stance.

He insisted that his role as a traditional leader gives him both the authority and the responsibility to speak on international affairs.

Profane outburst at ANC and journalists

Dalindyebo’s comments quickly escalated into a direct assault on the ANC’s foreign-policy position and the journalists questioning him. He rejected the ruling party’s stance on Israel and accused members of the press of political bias. In an angry exchange, he used censored profanity to describe both the ANC’s policy and reporters in the room, calling journalists “prostitutes of the ANC” and warning them not to treat him disrespectfully.

The king also defended his decision not to visit Gaza or meet Palestinian officials during his trip.

According to him, his encounters in Israel shaped his view of Hamas.

“Hamas is a club of criminals that hides behind politics and religion,” he said.

A divided national reaction

Public response to the king’s remarks has been immediate and polarised.

Some have applauded his boldness in asserting independence from government policy while others have condemned his rhetoric, calling it reckless, undiplomatic, and damaging to South Africa’s long-held solidarity with Palestine.

Civil-society groups and political leaders criticised both the language he used and the implications of the visit, questioning whether the trip was official, who funded it, and whether any agreements were reached.

A larger question emerges

As demands grow for clarity on the purpose and outcomes of the visit, the incident has revived a wider debate.

What role should traditional leaders play in shaping South Africa’s foreign policy?

Should they be consulted?

Or are such interventions a breach of diplomatic protocol?

For now, Dalindyebo has positioned himself firmly at the centre of a geopolitical argument that is unlikely to fade soon.

Tensions between the United States and Venezuela have flared again after President Donald Trump declared online that the airspace “above and surrounding Venezuela” should be treated as completely closed. Venezuela quickly condemned the statement, calling it a “colonialist threat” and accusing Washington of yet another hostile move aimed at undermining the country’s sovereignty.

Although the United States has no legal authority to shut down another nation’s airspace, Trump’s post has already created uncertainty for travelers and airlines. It comes at a time when the U.S. military has been expanding its presence in the Caribbean, a buildup officials claim is part of an effort to combat drug trafficking—an accusation Venezuela has long rejected.

In his post, Trump warned airlines, pilots, and traffickers to avoid Venezuelan skies entirely. The message sparked outrage in Washington as well. Lawmakers from both parties criticized the president for acting without congressional approval, warning that escalating threats could drag the U.S. into a new foreign conflict.

Venezuela says the pressure isn’t limited to public warnings. Officials accuse the U.S. of suspending migrant repatriation flights without explanation. In response, they called on governments and global organizations to speak out against what they describe as U.S. aggression.

Meanwhile, Venezuela’s military has been carrying out exercises along the coast, displaying anti-aircraft systems and heavy weaponry. The show of force comes just days after Venezuela banned six major airlines from landing in the country when they failed to meet a tight deadline to resume flights.

The U.S. has also deployed a massive military force near Venezuela, including the world’s largest aircraft carrier and thousands of troops—the biggest American show of strength in the area since the late 1980s. Washington insists the deployment is aimed at stopping drug trafficking, but Venezuelan officials believe the real goal is to remove President Nicolás Maduro from power.

American forces have carried out strikes on boats they claim were carrying drugs, though evidence has not been publicly provided. Venezuelan officials say these actions reveal a broader plan to destabilize the country.

The diplomatic clash has grown even more intense after the U.S. officially labeled the Cartel de los Soles—a group it says is run by high-ranking Venezuelan officials—as a terrorist organization. Venezuela strongly denies the cartel exists, calling the accusation political fiction designed to justify foreign intervention.

As the war of words escalates, uncertainty grows for travelers, regional governments, and millions of Venezuelans who fear that rising tensions could lead to even greater conflict.

A coalition of respected Nigerians, under the banner of Concerned Nigerian Citizens, has appealed to the United States to withdraw its recent threats against Nigeria. The group also called on the Nigerian government to take full responsibility for tackling insecurity and safeguarding its people.

Speaking at a press briefing in Kaduna, Dr. Bilkisu Oniyangi said the group—made up of Nigerians from diverse backgrounds and faiths—came together to respond constructively to recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump had suggested that Nigeria could be relisted as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) and even hinted at possible military action.

According to Oniyangi, those comments have stirred anxiety and division across the country. “We are concerned that these developments could deepen our national fault lines and turn Nigeria into a pawn in global geopolitics,” she said.

She emphasized that Nigeria’s long-standing challenges—ranging from insecurity and poverty to poor governance—had made the nation vulnerable to foreign pressure. “This is our problem as Nigerians, and it will be solved by us,” she added. “What we need now is solidarity, not interference.”

The group acknowledged that while global partners such as the U.S., U.K., China, and Russia could support Nigeria in its fight against terrorism, the country’s sovereignty must remain non-negotiable. They urged President Bola Tinubu to show stronger political will and accountability, calling on him to directly reassure citizens that their safety is his government’s top priority.

“We encourage President Tinubu to stay focused on rebuilding trust and reforming our decaying security institutions,” Oniyangi stated. “He should resist unnecessary foreign trips and instead lead from home.”

The group also called on the President to appoint capable ambassadors who would defend Nigeria’s image abroad and prevent misinformation. They urged religious and community leaders to promote unity and tolerance, reminding Nigerians that insecurity affects everyone regardless of faith or ethnicity.

“Nigerians should not argue about who suffers more,” the group said. “Every life matters. This is a battle between peace-loving citizens—Muslims and Christians alike—and those who seek to destroy them.”

They also warned against growing foreign influence in the Sahel region, which they said could empower extremist groups such as Boko Haram, ISWAP, Ansaru, IPOB, and bandits. Such instability, they noted, threatens not only Nigeria’s unity but also the security of the wider region.

“Our independence and unity have been tested before,” Oniyangi concluded. “We will overcome again, but we need the support of genuine friends and allies.”

The group reaffirmed its commitment to working with the government and other stakeholders to promote peace, national cohesion, and lasting security across the country.
