The shooting occurred near the Johan le Roux off-ramp after a silver Volkswagen Polo, carrying four occupants, was forced to pull over due to the vehicle overheating.

According to Spokesperson from Meyerton SAPS Constable Nompumelelo Zazini the victim, identified as Xolani Dube (23), had crossed the freeway to seek assistance.

Dube reportedly approached a white Toyota Corolla parked on the opposite side of the road to request water.

In a sudden turn of events, shots were fired from the Corolla. Dube was hit and tragically succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The violence did not end with the initial shooting. Reports indicate the white Toyota Corolla sped off toward Vereeniging before circling back to the Johan le Roux off-ramp.

Upon returning, the suspects opened fire again on the stationary Polo.

The driver’s 16-year-old son sustained a gunshot wound to his arm.

The driver and a fourth passenger managed to escape physical harm.

The teenager was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Forensic teams combed the area, eventually recovering 13 spent 9mm cartridges from the scene. As of Sunday morning, the motive for the attack remains unclear, and the suspects are still at large.

“We are appealing to any members of the public who may have witnessed the incident or seen the white Toyota Corolla in the area to come forward,” said Meyerton Station Commander Colonel Senzangakona Christopher Mohale.

Police have registered cases of murder and attempted murder.

Limpopo Police spokesperson, Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said it is reported that police were alerted about a shooting incident and rushed to the crime scene.

“Upon arrival they found the victim laying on the floor with multiple gunshots on the body. The members of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were summoned and the male victim was certified dead upon their arrival at the scene.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that two unknown male suspects entered the shop armed with a firearm and shot the deceased without saying a word. Afterward, the duo fled the scene, driving a white Ford Fiesta motor vehicle with an unknown Gauteng registration number,” said Mashaba.

Mashaba said the motive of the incident is not known at this stage.

“A manhunt of the two male suspects is ongoing and police request anyone with information that can lead to their apprehension to contact the Investigating Officer, Sergeant Delton Makhubele on 083 357 3896, CrimeStop number 08600 10111, nearest police station or MySAPSApp,” said Mashaba.

According to investigators, the footage captures a gunman with dreadlocks approaching and shooting the victim as he arrived at his vehicle outside a venue. After being shot, DJ Warras attempted to flee but collapsed at the scene. He was armed at the time, and nothing was stolen, suggesting the attack was not a robbery.

Police also identified a second suspect wearing clothing resembling a security uniform, who was seen with the gunman after the shooting. A third suspect is believed to have played a role in the incident.

DJ Warras was shot and killed this afternoon, Tuesday, in Johannesburg’s Central Business District.

Provincial detectives, intelligence units, and tracking teams are now analyzing the footage and tracing the suspects’ movements to determine where they fled after the attack. The investigation is ongoing.

NPA regional Spokesperson for Free State and Northern Cape Mojalefa Senokotsoane said the case stems from a fatal shooting incident that occurred on Friday, 15 July 2023, in Geyer Street, Qibing Location. Ntsaoane, an illegal immigrant gunned downa James Zola Singaphi, a dedicated officer of the Free State Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport.

According to the law enforcement, the Wepener Frontline Service Centre personnel responded to a call reporting gunshots in the area. They discovered Singaphi’s lifeless body lying in a pool of blood, having suffered a gunshot wound to the left side of the chest. Emergency medical personnel declared him dead at the scene.

Members of the Local Criminal Record Centre processed the crime scene and recovered three spent cartridges believed to be from the firearm used in the attack. A case docket of murder was promptly opened at Wepener Police Station.

The Mangaung Metro Trio Task Team took charge of the investigation. The team was praised for their detailed and methodical work that ultimately led to Ntsaoane’s arrest and prosecution.

After a lengthy legal process, the Free State High Court found Ntsaoane guilty on 28 March 2025 of both murder and violating South Africa’s Immigration Act. Sentencing was subsequently reserved and handed down on Friday, 13 June 2025.

In addition to the life sentence for murder, the court imposed two years’ imprisonment for Ntsaoane’s unlawful presence in the country and declared him unfit to possess a firearm.

Gutter made his first appearance at the Brandfort Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday following his arrest by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team. His arrest comes after a long investigation and a court-ordered inquest in mid-2024.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Zweli Mohobeleli explained that the incident happened on August 29, 2016. Police were called to Gutter’s farm outside Brandfort after reports of an attack. When they arrived, they found four suspects who had been apprehended by local farmers and workers. Among them was Segalo, lying face down with a gunshot wound to his back. He later died from the injury.

A firearm allegedly linked to the suspects was only found three days later, not far from the scene. Both that gun and another firearm registered to Gutter were sent in for ballistic testing.

In the end, Segalo died, and the other three suspects were acquitted of attempted robbery. No charges were initially filed for Segalo’s death, but a new inquest opened in 2024 led the court to charge Gutter with murder in March 2025.

He was granted bail of R2,000, and his case has been postponed to May 29, when it will move to the Brandfort Regional Court.

Major General Mokgadi Bokaba, head of the Free State Hawks, commended the investigative team for their perseverance.

“This case is proof that the law may take time, but it doesn’t forget,” Bokaba said. “We may have thought we hit a dead end at first, but fresh evidence breathed new life into the investigation.”

“It won’t bring Mr. Segalo back,” Bokaba added, “but it does offer his family a chance at justice and closure.”
