SAPS National Commissioner Reappoints Mkhwanazi as KZN Police Chief

National Commissioner Fannie Masemola has formally reappointed Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi as KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner for another five-year term, ending weeks of uncertainty over the province’s top policing post.

Masemola announced the decision in Durban after meeting Thami Ntuli, telling provincial SAPS management the focus must now shift fully to fighting crime and strengthening community-centred policing.

He urged officers to support Mkhwanazi by “taking orders and doing your job.”

Mkhwanazi said he had initially planned to step down after one term but reconsidered following discussions with the National Commissioner about the importance of continued service in the province.

He called for unity within the police leadership to reduce crime, improve service delivery, and maintain clean governance.

The reappointment brings continuity to policing leadership in KwaZulu-Natal as authorities intensify efforts to improve safety across the province.

The Mayibuye Youth Movement notes with great concern that the number one general of SAPS the National Commissioner, Fannie Masemola who is entrusted with ensuring that the entire police machinery, from top to bottom, is coordinated, disciplined, and responsive to the safety of ordinary South Africans, is now himself implicated in a Medicare tender linked to the notorious Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

This is the same office responsible for giving direction, enforcing discipline, and ensuring that every police station, every unit, and every officer responds to the daily reality of crime in this country. Yet that very centre is now shaken.

You cannot expect a system to fight crime when its highest command is entangled in dealings linked to those very networks.

That is why we say SAPS is compromised.

Because what we are witnessing is not an isolated incident it explains the lived reality of our people.

Our communities are flooded with drugs. Nyaupe is destroying a generation in the townships.

Gang violence has become normal.

Victims of gender-based violence continue to wait for justice that never comes.

At the same time, those entrusted with protecting society are now linked to corruption and criminal networks.

So what must South Africans conclude? That the system meant to protect them has been captured.

This capture is not abstract it is happening under the political leadership of President Cyril Ramaphosa and the ANC. The ANC cannot distance itself from this. It is unfolding under their watch, within institutions they lead and control.

The ANC has become an enabler of this decay.

At the same time, government must begin to take responsibility for how it prioritises resources. While commissions are established and funded to probe political interference within the criminal justice system, communities are still waiting for basic answers.

Young people remain unemployed.

Villages still face water shortages.

Access to education remains unequal.

The same urgency, energy, and resources directed towards commissions like the Madlanga process must also be directed towards fixing these lived crises and more importantly, towards cleaning up the security cluster itself.

We further state, without hesitation, that any form of intimidation against whistleblowers must be condemned particularly against Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who has brought some of these issues into the public domain.

Those who speak out must be protected, not intimidated by some leaders who lead organisations that are not growing, “fiefdoms”.

The Mayibuye Youth Movement is clear to say that all those implicated whether the President, the Minister, the National Commissioner, or anyone else must face the full might of the law.

The Prayer Service For The Embattled And Suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu Is Underway

A prayer service for the embattled Police Minister Senzo Mchunu is underway in Durban in KwaZulu Natal (KZN).

The service is held in support of Mchunu who has been on special leave since July last year.

This is the third prayer for the embattled suspended Police Minister who was put on ice after he authorised the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) in December 31, 2024.

Before the Mpumalanga event, Mchunu’s spokesperson, Sithembiso Mshengu, said the minister was not involved in the logistical arrangements or funding of the prayer and would not attend.

“They did engage him on their initiative, and he felt there was nothing untoward, especially when faith groups hold such a prayer in his name as they may do with anyone in the republic or beyond,” he said.

The prayer comes as Mchunu faces mounting scrutiny.

KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has accused Mchunu of wrongfully disbanding the SAPS political killings task team (PKTT).

Mchunu admitted to disbanding the PKTT, allegedly with the president’s approval, but acknowledged he did so without consulting national police commissioner Gen Fannie Masemola.

Evidence before the Madlanga commission has suggested the unit may have been shut down to benefit criminal syndicates that infiltrated the police.

Mchunu has also been accused of being associated with alleged criminal cartel kingpin Vusimusi “Cat” Matlala.

While several witnesses have implicated Mchunu in alleged wrongdoing before the commission, the Presidency has confirmed he was not implicated in the commission’s interim report.

The report has not yet been made public due to its interim status. A final report is expected to be released once proceedings conclude.

BREAKTHROUGH: Suspect Arrested For Murder Of Madlanga Commission Witness

Police have made a major breakthrough in the murder investigation of Marius Van Der Merwe, widely known as Witness D, whose killing shocked the country and raised serious concerns around witnesses linked to the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.

A specialised task team established to investigate cases arising from the Madlanga Commission has arrested a suspect believed to be the gunman responsible for the killing.

The task team was established by National Commissioner Lieutenant-General Fannie Masemola on the instruction of the President to prioritise investigations linked to the commission.

SAPS national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that investigators obtained a J50 warrant of arrest earlier this week after gathering what she described as overwhelming evidence.

The suspect was arrested in Johannesburg on Saturday.

Police have also seized the vehicle believed to have been used during the murder, while search and seizure operations are continuing at several addresses linked to the suspect.

“The suspect believed to be the one who allegedly shot and killed Marius Van Der Merwe was arrested in Johannesburg,” said Mathe.

“The team is still on the ground where they are busy with search and seizure operations at various identified addresses of the suspect.”

The arrested suspect is expected to make his first appearance before the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

National Commissioner Fannie Masemola praised the investigation team for acting swiftly in securing the arrest, describing it as an important step in ensuring accountability in the high-profile case.

The murder of Van Der Merwe, known as Witness D in matters linked to the Madlanga Commission, sparked national concern over the safety of individuals connected to the inquiry.

Investigations remain ongoing and police have indicated that further developments may follow.

Suspended SAPS Sergeant Accuses KZN Top Cop Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi of Torturing Him During The Investigation Into The Kidnapping Of KwaDukuza Businessman Zakariyya “Zak” Desai.

Suspended police officer, Samkeliso Mlotshwa has made explosive allegations against KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

Mlotshwa claimed he was tortured by SAPS members including Mkhwanazi.

Mlotshwa made this claim while testifying before the Ad Hoc Committee probing allegations of police corruption on Friday.

He claimed police forced entry into his home in 2024, without a search warrant and later burnt it.

Mlotshwa told the committee he was identified as a prime suspect in Desai’s kidnapping case after the businessman was abducted outside a mosque in KwaDukuza on September 10, 2024.

The case was handled by a multidisciplinary team in KZN that included members of the Hawks and the provincial tracking unit.

The suspended officer testified that police officers forced entry into his home on November 20, 2024, while he was in Maputo.

“The officers did not have a search warrant and later they burned the house down. Days later, on November 23, I was detained in Maputo after I was arrested at a restaurant in Maputo under the claims that he was an illegal immigrant.

“I was taken to the nearest bush where members of SAPS based in Maputo tortured me. When they were tired of torturing me and realizing that I had no knowledge about Desai’s disappearance, they then decided to take everything that I had in my possession, including my passports and money. I was detained there as an illegal immigrant,” he said.

According to Mlotshwa, he was moved on November 28 from a police station in Maputo to the Lebombo border post and handed over to KZN police.

“He described the transfer as an illegal rendition conducted without proper legal procedures before he was formally processed by investigators.

Mlotshwa further claimed that on December 9, 2024, he and two Mozambican co-accused were taken from KwaDukuza police cells to a private farm despite having legal representation. He alleged they were transported in private vehicles belonging to Desai’s brother and were subjected to interrogation.

During the alleged interrogation, Mlotshwa said he and his co-accused were stripped naked and suffocated with a water-filled plastic bag.

“During the torture, the provincial commissioner was present and participated in the torture.

“He went as far as telling me that I should have rather committed suicide than coming to KZN,” he testified.

He claimed Mkhwanazi entered the room and instructed him to undress and squat.

Charges against Mlotshwa were later withdrawn in January 2025, but he remains suspended without pay while the allegations are expected to be addressed before the committee.

Mlotshwa concluded his testimony by accusing national police commissioner General Fannie Masemola and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) of failing to intervene.

“It is disappointing and heartbreaking that the national commissioner and Ipid have dismally failed to act decisively where illegal rendition, torture, and arson have been committed. They need to account and be held responsible for their lack of action,” he said.

Mkhwanazi and Masemola are set to return to the committee to respond to the allegations levelled against them.

SAPS Deputy National Commissioner Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili, Is Appearing Again Before The Ad Hoc Committee Of Parliament

South African Police Service (SAPS) Deputy National Commissioner Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili, is appearing again before an Ad Hoc Committee of Parliament on Tuesday.

Mosikili’s appearance forms part of an ongoing inquiry into allegations of political interference in the justice system that were by KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) top cop Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi in July last year.

Other reasons for her appearance is the decision to disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).

Mosikili is testifying because she served as the Acting National Commissioner for a period when SAPS Commissioner General Fannie Masemola was on leave, during which time a directive from the suspended Minister Senzo Mchunu was brought to her attention on or after December 31, 2024.

During the media briefing, Mkhwanazi alleged that suspended Deputy National Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya took control of 121 case dockets linked to political killings without proper authorisation.

“This was done without the instructions of the national commissioner, nor I, as the provincial commissioner. These dockets have, since March, been sitting at the head office, without work being done on them.

“Five of these dockets had already instructions to arrest perpetrators, but nothing has been done because a lieutenant general, Sibiya, executing the instructions of the minister, withdrew all these dockets and is sitting in his office in Pretoria. God knows why,” he said.
