Police in KwaZulu Natal have arrested a 63 year old suspect at Ekombe in connection with multiple offences including extortion, theft, possession of suspected stolen property and using a vehicle without the owner’s consent.

It is alleged that in December 2025, a case of theft was reported by a complainant at Nkandla Police Station. In January 2026, the same complainant opened another case at Newark Police Station relating to the use of property without the owner’s consent.

The cases were later linked to the theft of heavy duty construction machines from a construction site in Nkandla. It was subsequently discovered that the same machines were being used in Newark.

KwaZulu Natal SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Paul Magwaza said members of the Provincial Reaction Unit and the Empangeni Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit received information about the location where the machines were being stored and utilised.

“On Tuesday, 17 February 2026, an operation was conducted at a quarry in Newark where two excavators and one TLB machine were recovered. The recovered property is estimated to be valued at R50 million. The suspect was not present during the operation and remained at large,” said Magwaza.

He added that on Saturday, 21 March 2026, the complainant opened additional cases at Kombe Police Station including extortion, theft of a motor vehicle and using property without the owner’s consent. These cases relate to the theft of a truck from a construction site as well as alleged demands for money from the complainant.

“The suspect in this matter is the same individual linked to the Nkandla and Newark cases,” Magwaza confirmed.

Following further investigations and tracing operations, the suspect was arrested at Ekombe by members of the Empangeni Public Order Police. A truck was also recovered during the arrest.

The suspect has been charged with theft, extortion, possession of suspected stolen property and using property without the owner’s consent. He is expected to appear before the Nkandla Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 24 March 2026.

Litha Govuza and his friend who cannot be named because he fears for his were shot while waiting for their orders in a foreign national tuckshop on February 19.

Unfortunately Govuza was declared dead when he arrived at the hospital while.jis friend survived after he was shot twice in both legs. Govuza sustained five shot wounds and died on his way to hospital.

According to Apostle Tata Nxesi the Leader of Kingdom of God Ministries International in Driftsands in Mfuleni, Cape Town where Govuza was a keyboard player, said they want justice to prevail after Govuza was was and killed in front of two young children.

“On the Saturday (21 February 2026) evening after we were preparing for the Sunday Service with the Litha and the survivor and others, they decided to drop some people off in their himes and later they were meant to go join their study group and study Maths. While they were on their way to their study group, they decided to stop at the local shop and buy food and energy drinks.

“While they were still waiting for their orders, the criminals emerged from nowhere and started shooting at them for no reason. We are very traumatized about what happened to Litha who was a God fearing young man. A young man who wanted to perfect his Maths and go and study in University next year. Now it is all a dream which he will never realize because they took his life away. Litha was shot in tje head five times and his friend was shot twice in both legs,” he said.

On Friday a video emerged of a gunman from a Toyota Avanza, mumbling to himself and saying, “You think I’m playing?”who then then shouted at one of the men to get his attention, but when he attempted to shoot him in the back, the gun jammed.

One of the accomplices urged the gunman to shoot and stop talking. Both victims were shot in front of two young children who were inside the store.

According sources the two boys were shot in case of alleged misidentity.

“There are groups who extort money from these foreign nationals. These boys who are on the video shooting at those two boys had came earlier to extort loney but the shopowner told them that there is a group that came earlier and took the money. The boys left and came back armed and find Litha and his friend at the shop, they then thought it was the other group tjat had collected money earlier,” two well known sources said.

A Bloemfontein police officer who allegedly kidnapped a Martie du Plessis Special School learner is due back in the local magistrate’s court early next year Sgt Nzima Adoons his case was postponed to Friday, 16 January, for final investigations. He is facing charges of extortion and the kidnapping of Kamogelo Baukudi, 19.

Adoons was granted bail of R2,000 in July, with strict conditions. He may not interfere with the investigation or intimidate state witnesses. He must also report to his nearest police station every Friday and Sunday.

Kamogelo was allegedly kidnapped after school in June by men who impersonated police officers. After the learner was picked up by a driver working for one of his parents in a Suzuki, the alleged kidnappers followed and stopped them near Vereeniging Drive.

Daniel Malebatso, the driver, alleges he heard a siren behind them and the occupants of a white Toyota Hilux double-cab bakkie, fitted with blue “police lights”, pulled them over.

Kamogelo and Malebatso were separated, and Malebatso was told to drive ahead to the Park Road police station while they would follow with Kamogelo. The Toyota Hilux, however, vanished from sight when a truck passed between the Suzuki and the Hilux.

“The matter of Nzima Adoons has been postponed to January for further investigation,” said Free State NPA spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane. “He is facing charges of extortion, as well as kidnapping, and he is out on bail.”

Adoons was linked to the case by the tracker of the vehicle he drove on the day that Kamogelo was kidnapped. This was revealed by investigating officer Lt. Col. Kelaotswe Lebodi when he testified.

Lebodi testified in October that the vehicle tracker apparently placed him at the exact location where Kamogelo was last seen. Five other suspects were arrested in connection with the kidnapping: three at a house in Kanana, Wepener, and two others on the road between Kwetla and Wepener with the victim in their company.

A Gauteng traffic officer and a civilian accomplice have been arrested on charges of extortion and corruption. The two, both aged 50, are expected to appear in the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

The arrests follow a complaint from a business owner who said the officer had been making monthly visits to his premises, claiming the business’s operating licenses were not valid. According to the business owner, the official demanded a monthly payment of R10,000 to avoid shutting the business down.

Earlier this week, the officer and his associate reportedly showed up at the business again. They arrested an employee—who was later released—confiscated operating certificates, and took R3,000 in cash. The officer allegedly told the owner that the documents would only be returned once the remaining R7,000 was paid.

The matter was reported to authorities, and an undercover operation was set up. The two suspects were arrested shortly after receiving the balance of the money in Zakariyya Park.

Officials praised the swift response and work of the investigation team, which helped bring the suspects to justice.

Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae congratulates members of the South African Police Service for the safe rescue of Kamogelo Baukudi in the early hours of Friday, 27 June 2025.

The 19-year-old Grade 11 pupil at Martie du Plessis High School was abducted on 5 June 2025 while being driven home from school. Following his abduction, police launched a massive manhunt which led to the arrest of a police officer who was charged with kidnapping and extortion.

In the early hours of Friday, 27 June 2025, police were led to Wepener where Kamogelo was found unharmed. Five suspects, aged between 20 and 29, were arrested, bringing the total number of suspects to six.

Premier Letsoha-Mathae has thanked members of the police who have been working around the clock to bring Baukudi safely home. She said the rescue of Baukudi was a demonstration of their meticulous work and dedication to bringing a peaceful ending to a rather worrying incident.

The Premier also said she was mortified to learn that some of the suspects were almost the same age as Baukudi. She said this was a worrying indication of the prevalence of crime in the province, but added that the police were equal to the task of stopping criminals in their tracks.

Premier Letsoha-Mathae said she was always optimistic that the young man would be alive, owing it to paternal instincts.

The Premier further appealed to the public to allow the police space to complete their investigation to determine what happened, and to ensure the successful prosecution of the suspects.

“We are all incredibly relieved that Kamogelo Baukudi has been found unharmed. We thank the South African Police Service, under the capable leadership of Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, for a job well done. The boy has been reunited with his family and we hope that he will quickly put this incident behind him and continue with his studies,” Premier Letsoha-Mathae said.

A Johannesburg man has accused a police officer of attempting to extort money from him in exchange for the return of goods stolen during an armed robbery at his home.

Joseph Mohoaduba, who lives in Mondeor, said his family was traumatised in March when two armed men broke into their property, robbed them at gunpoint, and drove off in his son’s vehicle filled with personal items, including music equipment. His son was later abandoned in Naturena.

Mohoaduba immediately opened a case at the Mondeor police station. However, he was stunned when he received a phone call the next day from a man identifying himself as Captain Mahube. The caller claimed to have arrested five suspects in Atteridgeville, west of Pretoria, and said they had been driving the stolen car and were in possession of the robbed items.

According to Mohoaduba, the caller demanded R2,000 via e-wallet for a clearance certificate and to facilitate the return of the vehicle to Johannesburg. Suspicious, Mohoaduba offered a larger sum in cash and requested a bank account for a direct deposit instead.

“He told me using a bank account would get him fired,” Mohoaduba said. “When I refused to send the money by e-wallet, he deleted our WhatsApp conversations.”

However, a file the officer had shared—including Mohoaduba’s police statement and the identity documents of an officer named LL Mahube—was automatically backed up to his device.

Mohoaduba expressed shock and concern over how an officer based in Kuruman, Northern Cape, could access case information from Johannesburg, raising fears of possible police involvement in criminal activity.
