The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa is marching with its members from Samancor Glencore and Almar investments to the office of the Presidency.

They are demanding that government must intervene urgently to reduce the energy tariff.

Numsa Spokesperson, Phakamile Hlubi-Majola said that they are marching to the office of the Presidency of the GNU Cyril Ramaphosa because the matter is serious that it demands the highest level of attention.

The demands include that government cannot fail to give this sector a 62 cent electricity tariff when they have an abundance of coal which is the strategic mineral.

“Numsa further calls on government to nationalise the industry by taking ownership of shares in the smelter sector and it must make sure that workers also have a stake so that government does not complain about the billions it will be losing as a result of delivering this 62 cents competitive electricity tariff.

“This will make this industry to be competitive and profitable and our government will benefit on behalf of the people, from dividends and it will generate revenue through tax. Workers will also benefit from the sweat and toil of their labour, by benefitting out of the labour they produce,” she said.
