]]> The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Specialized Services Units Officers, arrested forty-seven undocumented foreign nationals, aged between twenty-four (24) and seventy-two (72), from various African countries across the City of Ekurhuleni.

According to the statement issued by EMPD, the arrests were effected during law enforcement operations conducted at identified hotspot areas, aimed at curbing the growing number of undocumented individuals within the City on Sunday and Monday.

All suspects were unable to produce valid passports or identification documents and were immediately detained.

Immigration services were notified to conduct further verification of their legal status in the country.

All suspects face charges under the Immigration Act and are appeared in their respective Magistrates’ Courts.

Their matters were postponed for further investigations and consultations.

]]> The City of Ekurhuleni has begun disciplinary proceedings against 389 members of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) for their involvement in an illegal strike that caused major disruptions on key highways last month.

 

The protest, which took place on March 19, 2025, was sparked by demands for overtime compensation and salary increases. Uniformed officers were seen blocking major routes, including the R24 and N3 highways, holding signs with messages demanding salary adjustments or threatening to surrender their weapons.

 

Authorities stated that the action was unauthorized and violated laws governing essential service workers, who are legally restricted from striking due to their role in maintaining public safety. The protest led to massive traffic congestion, especially near OR Tambo International Airport, impacting access and flight schedules.

All officers involved have been suspended and ordered to return city-issued property such as vehicles, firearms, and access cards. The city has labeled their actions as gross misconduct, citing violations of labor regulations and a breach of public trust.

 

While disciplinary hearings are underway, the city is coordinating with the South African Police Service to maintain law enforcement operations. Officials reaffirmed their commitment to public safety and accountability within essential services.
