DURBAN BUSINESSMAN LOSES COURT BID TO BLOCK SAPS FIREARMS RAID AS POLICE PUSH AHEAD WITH OPERATION BUYISAA dramatic legal showdown in the Durban High Court has ended in defeat for controversial businessman Calvin Mathibeli after his urgent attempt to block a police firearms inspection was thrown out with costs.

Mathibeli, who is linked to the ANC and owns Calvin and Family Security Services in Durban North, rushed to court in a last minute bid to stop SAPS from entering his company premises.

But the court was not convinced.

In a decisive ruling, the judge dismissed the application, finding that it lacked urgency and ordering Mathibeli to pay legal costs to the police.

The decision clears the way for SAPS to move forward immediately with a full firearms compliance inspection at the company under Operation Buyisa.

The operation is part of a nationwide crackdown targeting illegal firearms and non compliant security companies.

Police confirmed that the inspection will proceed as planned, backed by constitutional powers and Section 109 of the Firearms Control Act.

Operation Buyisa has become one of SAPS’s most aggressive responses to rising gun violence, with officers deployed across multiple provinces to seize illegal weapons and enforce strict compliance.

Authorities say security companies are now under intense scrutiny.

Any business found operating outside the law faces serious consequences including confiscation of firearms and potential criminal charges.

SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Mukhathi said the operation is focused on stopping the spread of illegal firearms and tightening control over licensed weapons.

He warned that inspections will continue across the country as police intensify efforts to restore order and reduce gun related crime.

The failed court bid has now placed Mathibeli and his company firmly in the spotlight as police move in.

And as Operation Buyisa gains momentum, more security firms could soon find themselves facing similar inspections.

For SAPS, the message is clear.

No one is above the law.

After being ambushed by South Africa Police Service (SAPS), businesman has spoken out for the first time.

Durban based businessmam Calvin Mathibeli, founder of Calvin And Family group is accusing SAPS of misjustic.

In a statement sent to the media on Friday, Mathibeli claimed that there was an unlawful conduct from SAPS.

“Multple units of the SAPS inlawfully descended on my residence and offices in what appears to have been a coordinated operation premised on a fraudulent warrant of arrest.

“On 19 December 2025 at approximately 08:32, SAPS members, some with their faces concealed arrived at one of our Chairman’s properties in La Lucia. The officers claimed they were acting on

instructions from the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner and stated that they were there to arrest me,” he said.

Mathibeli said the family member informed the officers that he no longer resides at that address, he

moved in April 2024.

‘”The officers eventually departed, leaving several vehicles parked outside the premises. Upon being advised that we no longer resides at the La Lucia address, SAPS members

proceeded to my business premises at Durban North. There, they stopped, intimidated and verbally abused my wife. She was subjected to insults and derogatory language, including being called “ukhumula amasimba”, despite explaining that her husband was in Gauteng,” he said.

A 67-year-old businessman from Phoenix, north of Durban, was found safe after being kidnapped on Friday in the Cornubia area. The man, known locally as the owner of a ranch and beverage delivery business, had been making a delivery when three armed men ambushed him and forced his employee out of the vehicle.

During the abduction, he managed to find an opportunity to escape. While his captors were distracted, he ran into the nearby Ndwedwe area. Despite the suspects firing several shots at him during his escape, he reached safety after flagging down a passing Uber driver, who helped him get to a nearby police station.

The man was later reunited with his family, who expressed deep relief and gratitude. His vehicle, taken during the incident, had not been recovered at the time of reporting. The incident has renewed local concerns about rising crime and public safety in the region.

Toddler Abandoned While Mother Travels to Negotiate Lobola

In a separate incident over the same weekend, a two-year-old girl was left with street vendors in the Verulam central area by her mother, who then travelled out of town.

The child was left with a small amount of food, and the mother promised to return soon. However, she remained unreachable for an extended period. The vendors, growing increasingly concerned, eventually handed the child over to local responders.

The mother returned two days later, explaining that she had gone to negotiate lobola (a customary bride price) in another town with a new partner. Upon returning, she was directed to the police station where her daughter was being cared for.

Authorities have not confirmed whether the mother was allowed to take the child home or whether she will face legal consequences. Investigations were reportedly ongoing.
