Earlier today, ActionSA’s Mayoral Candidate for Ekurhuleni, Xolani Khumalo, responded to community appeals and personally apprehended and handed over to the police a drug dealer who had been selling drug-laced baked goods to minors in Etwatwa.

Reports indicate that the perpetrator sold the drug-laced products yesterday, and today several minors fell ill after consuming them, prompting an immediate response from community members. Five children were rushed to the Phillip Moyo Clinic for urgent medical treatment.

When confronted, the suspect brazenly admitted that selling these products was his “means of making a living.”

ActionSA is committed to cleaning up communities and protecting South Africa’s youth from the scourge of drugs and criminal exploitation. This incident once again underscores the urgent need for stronger community vigilance, proactive policing and decisive action to combat the spread of drugs in our communities.

ActionSA’s mission to fix Ekurhuleni is anchored in our 10-Point Action Plan, which includes dismantling drug syndicates and bringing criminals to justice. Those who undermine the rule of law have no place in our society. If we are to truly fix Ekurhuleni, this culture of impunity must end.

Robert Mugabe Junior, son of the late former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, has spent two nights in custody after being arrested in Harare for allegedly driving against traffic and possessing drugs.

The 33-year-old was stopped by police after he was spotted driving a silver Honda Fit the wrong way along 2nd Street Extension. During the search, officers reportedly found two small sachets of cannabis, rolling papers, and a crusher in his bag. The cannabis weighed about two grams, with an estimated street value of US$30.

Mugabe Junior appeared in court, but his bail hearing was postponed until Friday, leaving him remanded in Harare Central Prison.

The case has sparked public interest due to his high-profile family background and previous brushes with the law. It also comes just months after his younger brother, Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, was arrested on charges including assault, following a violent incident at a mining site involving heavily armed men.

Observers say the outcome of Mugabe Junior’s case will be closely watched, particularly in how law enforcement handles high-profile suspects.

Learners from Boitekong Secondary and Boitekong II Secondary in North West have taken a powerful stand against the rising challenges of drugs, gangsterism, and violence in their schools.

Over two days, pupils, teachers, and community leaders joined hands under the theme “My school, my responsibility – standing against drugs, violence and gangs.” The campaign was led by the Adopt-a-School Foundation in partnership with social development, health, correctional services, and the police.

The pupils listened to testimonies from rehabilitated offenders who shared their stories about how drugs and crime derailed their lives. “You are children and must remain focused on your schooling. Violence, gangsterism and drugs are crimes. If you do not stop, you will end up in jail,” warned Edward Masilo from correctional services.

Teachers and learners also staged a play that dramatized the painful reality of recent incidents linked to drugs and violence. The performance ended with a peer-to-peer challenge, urging pupils not to sabotage their own education.

The campaign climaxed with an emotional pledge, where the entire school community promised to respect each other, protect their education, and create a safe environment for learning.

“This campaign was about more than awareness. It was about hope, unity and a shared commitment to a better future,” said Adopt-a-School programme manager Peter Mahani. “You could feel the energy shift when the pupils stood up to take the pledge.”

Support from social workers, healthcare professionals, police, and correctional services reinforced the message with practical tools. Social workers highlighted mental health support, health teams spoke about substance abuse risks, and officers outlined the criminal consequences of crime.

Corporate partner Merafe Resources backed the campaign as part of its commitment to building stronger communities. “We believe in safe and healthy schools where children can reach their potential. By working with the Adopt-a-School Foundation, we are investing in the future.”

Since 2002, the Adopt-a-School Foundation – part of the Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation – has supported nearly 700 schools, impacting more than 1.7 million learners and training over 35,000 teachers. At its core is a model of moral regeneration, combining academic, social, and infrastructure support to uplift communities.

During the operation, authorities arrested a foreign national without proper documentation. Several drug-related items were also found and seized.

What raised further suspicion was the discovery of condoms hidden in decorative vases—an unusual find that added to concerns about potential illegal or unregulated activity taking place on the premises.

The raid forms part of a broader effort to crack down on crime in the area.

Traces of anti-retroviral (ARV) drugs have been detected in some of South Africa’s water sources, raising concerns among the public. However, health authorities are reassuring residents that these residues pose no risk to human health and cannot cause HIV infection.

The findings came from a recent study that analyzed various water sources across the country. It revealed that small amounts of ARVs—commonly used in HIV treatment—are entering the water system through municipal wastewater facilities. The drugs most often detected were lopinavir and efavirenz, with some concentrations found to be higher than recommended international levels.

The study also pointed out that most current wastewater treatment plants are not equipped to filter out these types of pharmaceutical compounds. As a result, ARVs were found in higher concentrations downstream from these facilities, suggesting that the treatment systems are failing to adequately remove them.

Despite these discoveries, officials maintain that the levels found in drinking water are very low and not harmful. The Department of Water and Sanitation emphasized that while the presence of ARVs is not ideal, the drugs themselves do not transmit diseases—they are used to treat them. That means there is no risk of contracting HIV from drinking water containing trace amounts of ARVs.

Experts have acknowledged the need for more research into the long-term impact of pharmaceutical residues in water, including the potential for antimicrobial resistance and environmental harm. However, there is currently no evidence suggesting ARVs in water affect aquatic life or pose an immediate threat to human health.

Globally, the issue of pharmaceutical contamination in water is gaining attention, with many countries facing similar challenges. These substances are typically found in extremely small quantities—measured in nanograms—and are not yet fully regulated due to the complexity of monitoring and removing them.

The government continues to investigate the matter and encourages the development of more advanced water treatment technologies to address these emerging concerns.
