President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered a moving eulogy at Farisani’s Special Official Funeral at the University of Venda in Thohoyandou, Limpopo. He praised Farisani as a visionary leader, a servant of the people, and a moral compass whose work uplifted countless lives.

“Dean Farisani was not just a leader in title, but a beacon of hope, integrity and justice,” Ramaphosa said. “He lived with conviction, with purpose, and with extraordinary vision.”

Farisani, who passed away at age 76 after an illness, was a former Member of Parliament, MEC in the Limpopo provincial government, and Speaker of the Legislature from 1994 to 2009. A theologian and political activist, he was jailed multiple times under apartheid for his refusal to be silent in the face of injustice.

He was especially known for his embrace of liberation theology — the belief that true Christian faith demands active resistance to oppression and solidarity with the poor.

Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba remembered him as a father figure and mentor:

> “Ordinary people from all walks of life, especially in this province, saw him as a father. His teachings shaped many of us politically and spiritually.”

Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, echoed those sentiments, saying Farisani mobilised the church in the fight against apartheid:

> “We didn’t celebrate him enough during his lifetime. As we lay him to rest, we must ensure that his contribution is never forgotten.”

In his later years, Farisani continued his fight for justice, openly opposing corruption and calling for accountability during the collapse of VBS Mutual Bank.

He was laid to rest in Beuster-Maungani village following a heartfelt service. The country now mourns not just a politician, but a freedom fighter, a pastor, a teacher, and a beloved elder whose legacy will live on in the hearts and actions of those he inspired.
