Democratic Republic of Congo have secured a historic return to the World Cup for the first time since 1974.

This is after a dramatic 1-0 extra-time win over Jamaica in a playoffs match on Tuesday night.

The breakthrough came in the 100th minute when Axel Tuanzebe bundled the ball over the line from a corner.

The goal was briefly checked for handball but was eventually awarded, sparking wild celebrations.

DR Congo dominated most of the match at Estadio Guadalajara, creating the better chances in a fast-paced encounter, even though clear opportunities were limited.

Striker Cédric Bakambu could not hide his excitement after the final whistle.

“We’re happy, we’re really delighted,” he said. “Right now, I don’t think we fully realise it yet…

“But when we get back to Kinshasa, it’s going to be crazy.”

This marks only the second time DR Congo have qualified for the global showpiece.

They last appeared 52 years ago when the nation was still known as Zaire.

They become the 10th African team to qualify and will now compete in Group K alongside Colombia, Portugal and Uzbekistan.

Iraq filled the final remaining World Cup spot when they beat Bolivia face Iraq in the last inter-confederation playoff on Wednesday morning.

Rwanda’s leader, Paul Kagame, spoke out on Thursday, pushing for his nation to rely more on itself. This comes as there’s growing talk in the US about adding tougher sanctions because of Rwanda’s role in the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The small country in the Great Lakes region is facing more heat from around the world for backing the M23 rebel group. Last year, M23 took control of large areas in eastern Congo.

A peace agreement between Rwanda and Congo, put together with help from former US President Donald Trump, got signed in Washington not long ago. But just days after, M23 captured another key city, Uvira. There was strong agreement from both sides in a US congressional group recently to push for more sanctions on Rwanda.

At an event in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, Kagame stressed the importance of standing on their own.

He talked about committing to self-reliance so that Rwanda’s future doesn’t hinge on chance or the kindness of others who might help one day and pull back the next.

Self-reliance is our top goal, he emphasized.

Rwanda says it’s only in eastern Congo to defend against a militia made up of leftovers from the groups behind the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. They deny any direct military action. Kagame seemed to hint at some involvement in Congo.

When people ask if you’re in Congo, if you say no, then the steps you took for defense get ignored. And if you say yes, that turns into the biggest issue everyone focuses on.

For the first time, Rwanda admitted to working directly on security with M23 and its political group, the Alliance Fleuve Congo.

This coordination is to stop another cross-border threat like in the late 1990s that could put Rwanda at risk.

Health officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo are investigating what appears to be a new Ebola outbreak that has already claimed 15 lives. Authorities report 28 people showing symptoms, with most of the deaths occurring in the locality of Boulapé in southern Kasai province.

The country’s health minister says the severity is clear, as more than half of those affected have died. The first confirmed case is a 34-year-old pregnant woman. Other suspected cases are still under review.

Symptoms reported include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and heavy bleeding, prompting a swift response to contain the spread. Four health-care workers are among those being monitored.

Teams from the World Health Organization and Congo’s own rapid response units are on the ground to strengthen surveillance, improve infection control, and provide critical supplies such as protective gear and laboratory equipment. Stocks of treatments and the Ervebo Ebola vaccine are already in place to support containment efforts.

Ebola spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids such as blood, vomit, or semen. While rare, the illness is severe and often deadly if not controlled quickly.

The United Nations has condemned the killing of at least 52 civilians in the Democratic Republic of Congo this month by ISIL-linked rebels. The attacks, carried out by the Uganda-based Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), took place between 9 and 16 August in the Beni and Lubero territories of North Kivu province.

The UN mission in Congo, MONUSCO, said the violence was accompanied by kidnappings, looting, and destruction of property, and warned that the death toll could still rise. The region is already facing a precarious humanitarian situation, and the UN has pledged to strengthen support to Congolese authorities to protect civilians.

The ADF, formed in the 1990s by former Ugandan rebels, moved its operations to the DRC in 2002 after clashes with Ugandan forces. The group pledged allegiance to ISIL in 2019 and has since been responsible for thousands of deaths and widespread violence in the country’s northeast.

The renewed attacks come amid ongoing tensions between the DRC army and the Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group, who continue to dispute a US-mediated ceasefire deal. Both sides had been expected to sign a permanent peace agreement by 18 August, but no announcement has been made.

MONUSCO reiterated the UN Secretary-General’s call for all foreign armed groups in the DRC to lay down their arms and return to their countries of origin.
