The High Court of South Africa, Mpumalanga Division convicted and sentenced Innocent Sthembiso Maseko (35) to life imprisonment for the murder of his girlfriend, Mbali Lucy Ngubeni, at Silobela in Carolina in Mpumalanga.

Maseko and Ngubeni were in a domestic relationship and resided together.

According National Prosecuting Authority(NPA) Monica Nyuswa said the incident occurred on 20 August 2024, when the couple was in their bedroom, and an argument broke out, which escalated into a physical altercation.

“During the altercation, the accused poured petrol on the deceased and set her alight. The deceased pleaded with the accused to stop burning her. Despite sustaining severe burn injuries, she managed to run from the room into the passage of the house and called out to a friend who was sleeping in another room for assistance. The friend managed to extinguish the fire by pouring water on her.

“The deceased was subsequently taken to the hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries a week later. The incident was reported to the police, and the accused was arrested. During the trial, Maseko pleaded not guilty and claimed that he was not present when the deceased caught fire. However, State Advocate Sello Malesa presented compelling evidence, including testimony from multiple witnesses and a statement made by the deceased,” she said.

Nyuswa said the deceased’s friend also testified about what she observed during the incident.

“The court found the State’s witnesses credible and rejected the accused’s version of events. In aggravation of sentence, Advocate Malesa argued that domestic-related offences have become a serious problem in the country, which has resulted in Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) being declared a national crisis.

“He further highlighted the accused’s lack of remorse and urged the court not to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentence.

A Victim Impact Statement, compiled by the deceased’s mother and facilitated by Court Preparation Officer Nomfundo Mokoena, detailed the severe and ongoing psychological and emotional trauma endured by the family,” she said.

Nyuswa said that in delivering the sentence, the presiding judge remarked that it is the duty of the courts to send a strong message to would-be offenders that such offences cannot be tolerated.

“The court found no substantial and compelling circumstances warranting a deviation from the prescribed minimum sentence and accordingly imposed life imprisonment. Maseko was further declared unfit to possess a firearm, and his application for leave to appeal was dismissed,” she said.

The accused was also sentenced to six months’ imprisonment for malicious damage to property, with the sentences ordered to run concurrently.

In the fall of 08 June 2025, Mokgadi was relaxing at her mother’s house after ending a toxic relationship with Mokgehle. She was relieved after opening a case against him for malicious damage to property. At the time, he was out on bail attending the case at Morebeng magistrate court.

Mokgadi and her mother were ambushed around 16:00 hours in the afternoon by Mokgehle who was armed with a sharp knife.

According to the limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba Mokgadi tried to flee, however her speed was too not speed enough to save her life. He caught up with her and stabbed her until she collapsed to the ground.

During the confrontation, the accused produced a knife and repeatedly stabbed the victim. She attempted to flee the house, but the accused chased after her and continued stabbing her until she collapsed to the ground. Emergency Medical Services arrived at the scene and certified her dead.

The accused made his first court appearance before the Morebeng Magistrate’s Court on 09 June 2025. His bail application was opposed, and he remained in custody. The matter was later transferred to the Polokwane High Court, where the trial commenced on 02 March 2026 and concluded on 04 March 2026, resulting in the conviction and sentencing.

The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has commended the investigating officer for the diligent investigation that ensured justice for Mohlaela family.

A case of Assault with Intent to Cause Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH) was subsequently opened at the Carnarvon Police Station, which led to the arrest of the accused on 11 August 2025.

On Wednesday, 4 February 2026, the accused was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment. The court also declared him unfit to possess a firearm.

After the court found the perpetrator guilty of attempted murder on December 1, 2025, the matter was postponed to February 9, 2026, for sentencing.

The court’s decision was based on a disturbing sequence of events that revealed the premeditated nature of the crime.

The acid attack, which left Mmapeu with severe injuries and a long road to recovery, was captured on video footage.

The footage showed the accused displaying extreme anger and a refusal to accept the termination of her relationship, threatening to publish intimate images of Mmapeu, and boasting about having caused her to lose her job.

The video evidence clearly indicated premeditation and intent to harm.

The sentencing will take place atMokopane Magistrate’s Court today.

A young mother and her boyfriend have been arrested after police uncovered a horrific case involving the death of her three-year-old son in the Eastern Cape.

The 23-year-old woman and her 32-year-old boyfriend, both from Mbizana, are accused of murdering the child and hiding his body by burying him inside a bucket.

Police say the little boy was allegedly tortured and later killed. Investigators believe he was beaten with a stick and died in Sulenkama, where the boyfriend is said to be employed.

According to police, the case dates back to 1 September 2024. The mother reportedly told officers in 2024 that her son had gone missing at a fuel station in Mbizana. However, the story began to fall apart after investigators reviewed CCTV footage, which allegedly showed that the child did not disappear the way she claimed.

As the investigation continued, police uncovered what they described as the true events: after the child’s death, the couple allegedly placed him in a 20-litre bucket, sealed it tightly with wire, and buried it in a small grave.

The suspects later led police to the grave. When it was dug up, officers found the toddler’s decomposed remains still inside the bucket.

Both suspects have now been charged with murder. The mother is also facing an additional charge of defeating the ends of justice.

They are expected to appear at the Qumbu Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

A senior police official described the case as heartbreaking, adding that the law must take its course.

A woman was found murdered in the early hours of Thursday morning at a residential property in Parkgate, KwaZulu-Natal, following an alleged domestic altercation with her boyfriend.

The victim, whose identity has not yet been established, was discovered after reports that an incident had occurred during New Year’s Day celebrations.

According to Reaction Unit South Africa spokesperson Prem Balram, three men arrived at the organisation’s offices requesting urgent assistance.

They initially claimed that the woman had been shot during an altercation. Officers accompanied the men to the scene and proceeded on foot due to a narrow driveway leading to the residence.

Upon arrival, the woman was found lying on her back and showing no signs of life. An assessment confirmed that she was deceased.

Balram said no gunshot wounds were detected, contradicting the initial report. The injuries observed were consistent with an assault.

A bush slasher was found next to the body, and the injuries appeared to be consistent with the suspected weapon.

A towel and a dish containing blood-stained water were discovered near the scene, suggesting attempts may have been made to clean the area.

Further investigation revealed that the woman was allegedly involved in a domestic altercation. Her boyfriend fled the scene and could not be immediately located.

A case of murder has been opened and police investigations are ongoing.

A Tzaneen family, mourning an 18 year old Kgopotso Remember Mushwana, who was stabbed to death last week at Wisani Village, outside Tzaneen, is deeply hurt by misleading information spreading on social media concerning their loved ones.

The family said Kgopotso was not in a love relationship with Matome Masiya( 26) who repairs phones for a living.

“This is the first time I hear about the young man who took the life of my daughter and best friend. Kgopotso was in a relationship with a boy from Lenyenye township, ” said a grieving mother.

The mother confirmed that the Lenyenye family contacted them as soon as they heard about the incident and asked for permission to return her brand new sneakers, which she left at their place.

According to the family, Kgopotso left home around 10:00 pm to accompany a female friend to a hair salon.

Matome, who has been stalking that night, ambushed them and requested to talk to her, but she refused.

It is not clear which object, he used to strike her to the stomach.

It is believed that, before she took her last breath at Letaba hospital, she told the nurses that the person who pinned a object in her belly ( abdomen) is Matome, and she was never in a relationship with the suspect

It is believed that Matome had tried several times to win her over, but his proposal was turned down every time.

“I’m in pain,” said Mrs Mushwana

As police manhunt for Matome continues, she had a message for him

“If my daughter has ever wronged Matome, I wish he could have come to me and plead his case than resulting in taking her life,” said the mother

Kgopotso was an intelligent student in physics and mathematics. She passed her Grade 11 with flying colors and was excited to form part of the class of 2026.

“She wanted to become a nurse and improve my life conditions. Someone decided to take my child before her time.” said Mrs Mushwana as she withheld tears.

The family said they haven’t received any update regarding the case, and detective’s in charge of the case haven’t paid a visit at home or phone them.

Kgopotso was laid to rest on Sunday.

The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has strongly condemned the incident and immediately instructed the police to search for the perpetrator to face the full might of the law.

“Domestic violence is a big challenge in our Province and has been declared a national disaster by the President of the Country His Excellency Ramaphosa and anyone perpetuating it must face the consequences ” said the Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Hadebe.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is requested to contact the investigating officer , Sergeant Eric Mathebula, on 083 239 0977,Crime stop number 08600 10111.

The victims, both from Syria, had been unaccounted for since the summer. Their disappearance was first raised by a relative in Germany, who reported that the family had suddenly gone silent in July 2024.

Two brothers, aged 55 and 53, were arrested in connection with the case. The older brother, who had worked with the woman, recently told investigators that an “incident” occurred — but insists the deaths were accidental and denies killing them. Both men are now being held on strong suspicion of murder.

At the time the woman went missing, her colleague claimed she had travelled to Turkey with her daughter to visit family. Yet her phone was later found inside her apartment, contradicting his explanation. Her bank card had also been used abroad several times, and messages were sent from her phone — including a resignation letter and texts to the older suspect. Investigators say a large sum of money was transferred to him as well.

A neighbour reported hearing a loud noise and a child screaming “mama” around the time the two were believed to have vanished.

Police later discovered that a storage unit had been rented shortly before the disappearance, and a freezer was placed there. On the day the mother and child went missing, the brothers removed that freezer. A second freezer was purchased a week later. Investigators say these details suggest the crime may have been planned.

Due to the advanced state of decomposition, the exact cause of death could not be determined. However, authorities say the bodies were meticulously concealed and had not been found during an earlier apartment search.

The older brother has admitted to hiding the bodies but continues to deny intentionally harming the victims. His younger brother admits helping cover up the crime but denies knowing that a homicide had occurred. Both remain in pre-trial detention in separate prisons.

Austria’s Minister for Women and the Justice Minister condemned the killings, describing them as another tragic example of violence against women and girls — a societal problem they say must be confronted with urgency and determination.

A Gauteng traffic officer will spend the rest of his life behind bars after the Pretoria High Court found him guilty of murdering his wife, shooting her multiple times while their two young children watched.

The court sentenced 53-year-old Zakhele Bennet Hlongwane to life imprisonment for killing his 33-year-old wife, Tili Desire Ngobeni. He also received additional sentences for pointing a firearm and damaging property, but these will run concurrently with the life term. The court further ruled that he is unfit to ever own a firearm again.

According to the case presented in court, the tragedy unfolded on 1 April 2024. Hlongwane arrived at Ngobeni’s family home in the early hours of the morning, forced his way into her room by breaking down the door, and opened fire. Their children, aged three and five, were present and witnessed the killing.

A cousin who heard gunshots tried to check on what had happened, but Hlongwane pointed the gun at him before fleeing. Within an hour, he turned himself in at the Mamelodi police station, where he remained in custody after bail was denied.

During the trial, Hlongwane pleaded guilty and claimed he acted out of anger rather than planning to kill his wife. His legal team asked the court to consider his lack of previous offences and the apology letters he wrote to the family and community.

But the State rejected his apology as insincere, arguing that he only expressed regret after conviction. Prosecutors stressed that as a law enforcement officer, husband, and father, he had a responsibility to protect—not harm—his family.

Judge Mashudu Munzhelele agreed with the prosecution, calling the murder “extremely brutal and careless.” The judge noted that Hlongwane showed no true remorse and that no compelling reasons existed to reduce his sentence.

The acting director of public prosecutions in Gauteng praised the outcome, saying that justice for victims remains a priority and that severe sentences send a message to potential offenders about the value of human life.

The Moral Regeneration Movement (MRM) in the North West on Sunday applauded the 25 years imprisonment handed down to Molefi Benjamin Ramoholokoane (61) by the Potchefstroom Regional Court for the murder of his intimate partner Maria Masego Fumba (37) committed on the 11 February 2025.

The civil society led organisation promoting the Charter of Positive Values expressed hope that the sentence would serve as a deterrent to perpetrators of gender-based violence and femicide.

Convenor of the MRM Provincial Interim Committee, Pastor Lesiba Kgwele remarked that the conviction which was realized within a short period will contribute towards restoring public confidence in the criminal justice system.

“We trust that the Fumba family will find closure in the knowledge that justice was done and commend the investigation officer, Constable Pholoso Mosenogi of the Ikageng Detectives and the prosecution team on the successful conviction,” highlighted Pastor Kgwele.

Kgwele urged men who are experiencing pressure in their relationships and personal lives to seek professional counselling instead of taking matters into their own hands.

He said that Ramoholokoane was driven by jealousy, insecurity as a well as control to commit a heinous and ghastly act as he suspected that his girlfriend was cheating on him with a 77-year-old neighbour whom he was reportedly cooking a meal.

“He abrogated his responsibility as to protect his live-in partner whom he claimed to have loved when he resorted to senseless violence, ending her life in a gruesome manner,” underscored Kgwele.

Evidence presented in court revealed that Ramoholokoane had stabbed the deceased with knife multiple times with two knives until she succumbed on the scene.

Police were called to the scene and arrested him on the same day. He remained in police custody until the conclusion of the trial.
