Kubheka, 27, has been missing since 2 April, when he reportedly disappeared without a trace following a dispute linked to his successful tuck shop business.

According to reports, Kubheka’s business had been thriving, attracting attention from individuals who allegedly attempted to buy him out. Sources claim he refused multiple offers to sell his shop, raising concerns about possible intimidation linked to local business competition.

The case has sparked broader concerns around alleged organised groups operating within township economies, particularly in the spaza shop sector across KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and parts of the Western Cape.

Kubheka’s family believes his disappearance may be connected to these tensions and is calling for urgent intervention, saying there has been little visible progress in the investigation since the case was opened.

“I appeal to President Cyril Ramaphosa and the Minister of Police to urgently prioritise the disappearance of Mazwi Mpumelelo Kubheka. No South African can simply disappear without a swift, thorough, and accountable investigation,” said Mashaba.

“It has now been over a month, and the family continues to live in pain, confusion and fear. We call on authorities to act urgently and for anyone with information to come forward to help bring him home.”

Mashaba further warned that alleged criminal networks, intimidation tactics and possible protection rackets within township business sectors must be fully investigated.

Reports also suggest that a man known only as “Zulu” had allegedly been pressuring Kubheka to hand over the business prior to his disappearance. He is now also reportedly missing.

Additional claims have emerged alleging that certain private security structures may be protecting specific business interests, while local entrepreneurs are being pushed out of their own communities.

Authorities have yet to provide an update on the progress of the investigation.
