KwaZulu-Natal has been rocked by yet another deadly confrontation between police and violent criminals, as two wanted murder suspects were shot and killed during a high-stakes operation in Verulam, north of Durban, in the early hours of Thursday.

The suspects, believed to be behind two separate double murders earlier this year, were tracked down to a house in the eMhlasini area following a coordinated intelligence-driven operation.

Specialised units including SAPS eThekwini Outer North Crime Intelligence, Durban North SAPS Trio Crimes Unit, Newlands East SAPS Trio Crimes Unit, Durban Metro Police Trio Crimes Unit, and private security partner K9 Saint Security closed in on the suspects.

As officers approached, the suspects allegedly opened fire, triggering a fierce shootout.

Both men were killed during the exchange.

Police recovered two firearms at the scene, adding to growing evidence of heavily armed criminal networks operating in the province.

The latest incident signals an intensified crackdown under the leadership of Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, with police increasingly taking the fight directly to violent offenders.

This comes just days after another dramatic takedown on the KZN South Coast, where a 41 year old suspected hitman was shot dead by police in Pinetown.

The suspect was reportedly linked to more than 10 murder cases and was believed to be hours away from executing a contract killing targeting officials from the Umdoni Local Municipality.

Police tracked him to his hideout, where he allegedly opened fire upon their arrival. Officers responded, killing him in a brief but decisive shootout.

No police officers were injured, and multiple firearms were recovered.

With back-to-back operations resulting in the deaths of high-risk suspects, authorities appear to be tightening the net on organised crime in KwaZulu-Natal, sending a strong message to those involved in violent criminal activities.

The province remains on edge as police continue their aggressive pursuit of wanted suspects.

ANC branch condemns illegal grabbing of land happening in Road Reserve, we like to warn those who are doing this criminality to stop.

Also encourage our community to reject such act of criminality and stop funding criminals who in turn demand large sums of money to allocate a illegal stand. The ANC condemns illegal land invasion, viewing it as criminal acts that disrupt public order and service delivery.

While we acknowledge the dire need of housing, ANC in ward 42 believe illegal grabbing of land often disadvantages those desperately needs housing by extorting money from them. Furthermore enables those on the back of housing list jump the queue. We believes people who still not yet re-blocked should be the first to be assisted.

Currently through our Ward 42 Cllr we are busy with MMC of Human Settlement regarding land that will accommodate all people who still need to be re-block, this illegal grabbing will delay any progress towards making sure people get to be re-block.

ANC in ward 42 support robust action, including use of courts and police, to evict unlawful occupiers and to prosecute those involved in facilitating invasions.

We call on all law abiding citizens and community to reject this provocation by people who act like they care while they’re known as Community Hustlers who hustle through pain and vulnerability of our community.

The South African government has expressed serious concern following the arrival of convicted criminals deported from the United States to the nearby Kingdom of eSwatini.

Officials highlighted the potential risks this poses to national security and immigration policy, especially given how closely the two countries are linked by geography and movement. The individuals in question were described as highly dangerous and were flown in from the US on a special flight, with indications that more such deportations could follow.

The group includes individuals convicted of severe crimes such as child rape, murder, and gang-related activities. They are originally from countries like Vietnam, Jamaica, Laos, Yemen, and Cuba—nations reportedly unwilling to accept their return.

The U.S. authorities had announced their intention to work with eSwatini and an international migration organization to facilitate the transit of these deportees to their countries of origin. However, South African officials remain skeptical, warning that some of these men may not be received by their home nations and could potentially remain in the region, possibly even crossing into South Africa.

Meanwhile, a well-known human rights lawyer in eSwatini has taken legal steps to gain access to the detainees. He was denied a visit by prison officials who cited technical preparations as the reason. He argued that denying the men access to legal representation is unconstitutional and unlawful.

The issue has sparked public outrage in eSwatini, with some citizens feeling betrayed by their government for agreeing to receive the deportees without wider public consultation. Critics fear this could open the door to further similar agreements, raising anxiety about national sovereignty and safety.

One local editor expressed that the decision felt like an invasion and accused the leadership of acting in secrecy. There’s widespread worry that this might only be the beginning of more transfers, and that such actions could destabilize the region if not managed transparently.

Though the current plan reportedly limits the stay of these individuals in eSwatini to one year, many believe the long-term consequences have yet to be fully considered—especially in a region already grappling with complex migration and security challenges.

By Khabonina Mdokwe

The Economic Freedom Fighters Youth Command (EFFYC) marched throughout the city of Durban in support of Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi following the investigations held by the Independent Police Investigation Directorate (IPID) against him.

Since stepping into office as KwaZulu Natal (KZN) Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi has been known for his robust approach that has taken on a shoot to kill ideology when he encounters criminals. While this gained him a lot of supporters and trust from people it also stirred some retaliation. According to reports, Mkhwanazi’s crime-fighting strategies caused shootouts which resulted in over 120 deaths of suspects.

The march by the EFFYC which started at Curries Fountain Stadium to the South African Police Services Provincial Head Office in Durban was one of many marches from people who stand with Mkhwanazi.

As crime continues to be a threat, many citizens of the province of KZN say that Mkhwanazi is one of the leaders that South Africa needs. His dedication to eradicating crime left a lot of people with hope for safety and security.

The march was to show that they EFFYC stood in solidarity with Mkhwanazi and his endeavors to expose and combat criminal activities.

“General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is an honest, law-abiding citizen as he was deployed to protect South Africans against crime and corruption. In my opinion, the investigations were to silence him and prevent him from uncovering the secret crime syndicates certain government officials and politicians are involved in,” said MDNTV reporters

Even though some believe not investigating the General would be undermining the rule of law they also believe this investigation proves that there is a lot of illegal operations that Mkhwanazi is trying to uncover, and this investigation may be a plot to hinder him from doing that.

“If foul play or any criminal activity is suspected, everyone under law should be investigated, trialed, and persecuted, if need be, no matter who they are. However, if the president himself did not face any legal consequences for the Pala Pala scandal, why then should an example be made using Mkhwanazi who is doing a great job eradicating crime in KZN?”

Mkhwanazi has been under investigation by the IPID after he was accused of interfering with an arrest of a fellow officer. An anonymous complaint the was lodged against him regarding the release of former head of Westville Maximum Prison, Nelly Ndlovu in 2023. Mkhwanazi was given until the 19th of March to explain his involvement in the matter. He denied the allegations.

According to Mkhwanazi, these are all efforts to discredit him in his attempts to combat crime, expose corruption within the police for and to reveal that there are senior officials and politicians who get financially benefits from corruption. Despite allegations made against him, Mkhwanazi assured that he would not back off from the case, affirming his position as the presiding officer.
