MADLANGA COMMISSION DAY 4: FANNIE MASEMOLA REVEALS HOW THE POLITICAL KILLINGS TASK TEAM WAS FORMED

National Commissioner Fannie Masemola delivered explosive testimony during Day 4 of the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, revealing how the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) was formed after the disbandment of an earlier unit in KwaZulu-Natal.

Masemola told the Commission that the previous political killings team was dissolved following consultations involving SAPS leadership, the NPA, State Security Agency, and Correctional Services. He also revealed that ministerial approval was not required for the restructuring process.

The Commission further heard how Lieutenant General Dumisani Khumalo was selected to help build the new task team after achieving significant success in anti-rhino poaching operations across Limpopo, Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and North West.

Day 4 testimony focused on:
• The collapse of the original political killings unit
• The creation of the new PKTT structure
• National coordination between intelligence and law enforcement
• Expansion of investigations beyond KwaZulu-Natal
• Alleged political sensitivity surrounding investigations

The Madlanga Commission continues to investigate political killings, intelligence operations, and alleged criminal infiltration within South African law enforcement structures.

Madlanga Commission Probes Sandton Takedown of Katiso Molefe | Hawks Back in the Hot Seat

The Commission will tomorrow, Tuesday 25 November 2025, hear crucial new testimony from members of the DPCI and the Hawks. Their appearance will focus on the takedown operation at the Sandton home of Mr Katiso Molefe on 6 December 2024.

This operation has become one of the most contested law enforcement actions of the year, and tomorrow’s testimony is expected to reveal new details about planning, authorisation and the conduct of the officers involved.

The hearings resume at 09h30.
