According to early reports, a light delivery vehicle (LDV), commonly known as a bakkie, collided head-on with a sedan. The impact was so severe that the bakkie overturned. Sadly, the male driver and four female passengers died at the scene. One other person, who survived the crash, was rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident. However, transport officials have said they are not ruling out the possibility that negligence may have played a role.

The crash has once again highlighted the dangers on South Africa’s roads, particularly along routes in Limpopo that have seen a string of deadly incidents in recent years.

One of the drivers was found trapped in the wreckage and had suffered fatal injuries. Four other individuals from both vehicles sustained varying degrees of injuries and were transported to hospitals in Pietermaritzburg for treatment.

Department spokesperson Moeti Mmusi said poor weather conditions likely contributed to the accident, as heavy rain had reduced visibility along the road.

Motorists have been advised to seek alternative routes, as that section of the N4 remains closed. It is unclear when the road will reopen.

Authorities have warned road users to be cautious, as traffic volumes are expected to surge across South Africa’s major routes during the Easter period. Historically, the long weekend has been one of the most dangerous times on the roads, with thousands traveling to holiday destinations in a short span of time.

The N3 from Johannesburg to Durban, and the N1 from Johannesburg to Polokwane are expected to be among the busiest routes, alongside the N4 in Mpumalanga. Drivers are urged to be patient and vigilant, especially during peak hours and in high-risk zones.
