The orders were granted by the Special Tribunal following an investigation into Nako Mang Trading Enterprise CC, which allegedly submitted fraudulent claims to the Unemployment Insurance Fund under the Temporary Employer or Employee Relief Scheme.

Assets now under preservation include two residential properties in Turffontein, an agricultural holding, as well as multiple vehicles including a Toyota Dyna, Hyundai H-1, Mercedes-Benz and a trailer.

The Tribunal has barred the individuals involved from selling or transferring the assets. The Registrar of Deeds has also been instructed to place restrictions to prevent any disposal without approval.

Investigators found that between 2020 and 2023, the company allegedly misrepresented employment relationships to access UIF funds. Several individuals listed as employees later confirmed they had never worked for the company.

Instead of paying workers, the funds were allegedly diverted into personal accounts belonging to directors and their associates.

The SIU further revealed that company director Nikluis Manuel allegedly purchased vehicles in cash shortly after receiving UIF payouts and kept a portion as commission.

Another beneficiary, Khanyi Angel Nokukhanya, reportedly received over R569,000 from the proceeds, which was later used in property acquisitions.

According to investigators, the movement of funds reflects a pattern consistent with money laundering, where illegal proceeds are disguised through assets.

The SIU says the preservation orders are aimed at preventing the dissipation of assets while civil recovery proceedings continue.

In total, the unit is pursuing more than R148 million linked to fraudulent TERS claims involving multiple companies.

The mother of Shonisani Lethole, who died after being starved while admitted at Tembisa Hospital during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, is calling for arrests and accountability in the wake of a multibillion-rand corruption scandal linked to the hospital.

In July 2020, Shonisani publicly appealed for help, saying he had gone without food for two days. Just five days later, he passed away, sparking outrage across South Africa. An investigation later confirmed he had been left unfed for more than 100 hours and subjected to shocking neglect.

His mother, Patricia Lethole, says the family’s pain has only deepened as details of the corruption surfaced. A Special Investigating Unit report revealed that more than R2 billion was looted through fraudulent contracts at Tembisa Hospital, implicating several syndicates and at least 15 hospital employees. The scandal came to light after the assassination of whistleblower Babita Deokaran, who uncovered suspicious payments linked to the hospital.

Patricia insists her son’s death was preventable and demands that those responsible be prosecuted. She also called for symbolic justice by naming hospital boardrooms after Shonisani and Deokaran, as a reminder of the human cost of corruption.

“This hospital was supposed to save lives, not destroy them,” she said. “Our family will not stay silent until there is justice.”

For many, Shonisani’s story stands as a powerful reminder of how greed and neglect in the healthcare system can turn hospitals into places of tragedy instead of healing.

More than half of South Africans who had Covid-19 are still dealing with mental and cognitive challenges long after recovering from the virus—some even two years later.

A study that followed 97 individuals infected during the early waves of the pandemic revealed that symptoms like anxiety, fatigue, and memory issues were common, regardless of how severe their illness had been. In fact, even those who had no symptoms or only mild cases at the time of infection later reported significant mental health struggles.

The research team assessed participants at least six months after infection, using standard screening tools to check for cognitive and emotional well-being. Nearly 50% showed signs of memory or thinking difficulties, and over half said they continued to experience fatigue or mental health problems.

According to the lead researcher, the severity of the initial illness didn’t always determine whether someone would suffer from long-term effects. “Some of the people we spoke to barely felt sick at all during their infection, but months later they were dealing with brain fog, anxiety, and exhaustion,” he explained.

The team also tried to find biological clues—proteins or other markers in the blood taken during the illness—that might help predict who would develop these lasting symptoms. However, the results didn’t reveal any clear indicators.

These findings highlight a growing concern around long Covid, especially when it comes to mental health. The impact, researchers say, is real—and for many, life hasn’t returned to normal.

From the seashores of Bali to Hokkaido’s powdery ski slopes, the hordes of Chinese typically seen in pre-COVID days will nonetheless be lacking, tour operators say.

It’s a bitter disappointment for a lot of companies that had been hoping lean pandemic occasions have been over after Beijing relaxed restrictions on journey and stopped requiring weeks-long quarantines. Still, bookings for abroad journey have skyrocketed, suggesting it’s solely a matter of time till the business recovers.

“I think the tourists will return around the end of February or early March at the earliest,” stated Sisdivachr Cheewarattaporn, president of the Thai Travel Agents Association, noting that many Chinese lack passports, flights are restricted and tour operators are nonetheless gearing as much as deal with group journey.

COVID-19 dangers are one other large issue as outbreaks persist following the coverage about-face in China, he stated in an interview. “People are possibly not ready, or just getting ready.”

For now, the Chinese territories of Macao and Hong Kong look like essentially the most favored locations.

Just days earlier than Sunday’s begin of the Lunar New Year, iconic vacationer spots within the former Portuguese colony, like historic Senado Square and the Ruins of St. Paul’s, have been packed. Gambling flooring at two main casinos have been largely full, with teams of Chinese guests sitting across the craps tables.

“I’m so busy every day and don’t have time to rest,” stated memento store proprietor Lee Hong-soi. He stated gross sales had recovered to about 70%-80% of the pre-pandemic days from practically nothing simply weeks in the past.

Kathy Lin was visiting from Shanghai, partly as a result of it was simple to get a visa but additionally as a result of she was involved about dangers of catching COVID-19. “I don’t dare to travel overseas yet,” she stated as she and a good friend took images close to the ruins, initially the seventeenth century Church of Mater Dei.

That fear is retaining many would-be trip goers at home even after China relaxed “zero COVID” restrictions that sought to isolate all circumstances with mass testing and onerous quarantines.

“The elderly in my family have not been infected, and I don’t want to take any risks. There’s also the possibility of being infected again by other variants,” stated Zheng Xiaoli, 44, an elevator firm worker in southern China’s Guangzhou. But he was postpone by testing restrictions and different limits imposed by some international locations, together with the U.S., Japan, South Korea and Australia, after China loosened its pandemic precautions.

“It looks like many countries don’t welcome us,” stated Cong, who as an alternative was planning to move for a subtropical vacation spot in China, like Hainan island or Xishuangbanna, to take pleasure in some heat climate.

BEIJING (AP) — Chinese embassies stopped issuing new visas for South Koreans and Japanese on Tuesday in obvious retaliation for COVID-19 measures lately imposed by these nations on vacationers from China.

It wasn’t clear whether or not China would develop the visa suspensions to different nations which have imposed virus testing on passengers from China following its COVID-19 surge.

The embassies in Tokyo and Seoul introduced the suspensions in transient on-line notices.

The Seoul discover, posted on the embassy’s WeChat social media account, stated the ban would proceed till South Korea lifts its “discriminatory entry measures” towards China. The announcement coated vacationer, enterprise and another visas.

China’s Foreign Ministry threatened countermeasures final week towards nations that had introduced new virus testing necessities for vacationers from China. At least 10 in Europe, North America and Asia have executed so lately, with officers expressing concern a couple of lack of knowledge in regards to the Chinese outbreak and the potential for new virus variants to emerge.

South Korea had additionally stopped issuing most short-term visas at its consulates in China for the month of January, besides for authorities actions, important enterprise and humanitarian causes. Japan has not introduced the same step.

China’s embassy in Tokyo stated solely that visa issuance had been suspended. The bulletins appeared to use solely to new candidates, with nothing about individuals at the moment holding visas.

Japan has protested the transfer via diplomatic channels, Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi advised reporters in Argentina.

“It is extremely regrettable that China has restricted visa issuances,” he stated, including that Japan would reply appropriately whereas watching China’s outbreak and the way a lot info the federal government shares about it.

A South Korean Foreign Ministry assertion stated that “our government’s step to strengthen anti-virus measures on passengers arriving from China is based on scientific and objective evidence … and we have communicated with the Chinese side in advance.”

A Japanese Foreign Ministry official stated earlier that it might be “regrettable” if restrictions had been imposed. The official spoke on customary situation of anonymity.

A withholding of visas from South Korean or Japanese businesspeople might delay a hoped-for revival of business exercise and potential new funding following China’s abrupt lifting of anti-virus controls final month.

Business teams had warned earlier that world firms had been shifting funding plans away from China as a result of it was too laborious for international executives to go to underneath the pandemic controls. A handful of international auto and different executives have visited China over the previous three years, however many firms have relied on Chinese staff or managers already in the nation to run their operations.

A South Korean restaurant proprietor in Beijing stated the announcement compelled buddies to postpone plans to go to China. He spoke on situation of anonymity out of concern his enterprise is likely to be affected. He added that he’s getting ready to resume his Chinese work visa and doesn’t know whether or not that will likely be affected.

In a cellphone name on Monday earlier than the visa suspension was introduced, Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang “expressed concern” in regards to the measures taken by South Korea to his counterpart, Foreign Minister Park Jin. Qin stated he “hopes that the South Korean side will uphold an objective and scientific attitude.”

China’s transfer gave the impression to be grounded in its calls for that its residents be handled the identical as these of different nations. About a dozen nations have adopted the U.S. in requiring both a unfavorable check earlier than departing China, a virus check on arrival on the airport, or each.

“Regrettably, a handful of countries, in disregard of science and facts and the reality at home, have insisted on taking discriminatory entry restriction measures targeting China,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin stated Tuesday. “China firmly rejected this and took reciprocal measures.”

He didn’t reply straight when requested if new visas had been suspended for South Koreans and Japanese, saying solely that he had “made it very clear.”

The World Health Organization and several other nations have accused China of withholding information on its outbreak. A WHO official stated Tuesday that t he company sees no instant risk for the European area from China’s outbreak, however that extra info is required.

China’s ambassador to Australia stated the response of these nations to China’s COVID-19 outbreak hadn’t been proportionate or constructive.

Xiao Qian advised reporters in Canberra that China had shifted its technique late final 12 months from stopping infections to stopping extreme circumstances. He stated nations ought to use a science-based response.

“Entry restrictions, if they’re targeted at China, they’re unnecessary,” the ambassador advised reporters.

Once-cordial ties between South Korea and China, its largest buying and selling companion, soured in latest years after Beijing focused companies, sports activities groups and even Ok-pop teams to protest deployment of a complicated U.S. anti-missile system in South Korea.

China abruptly reversed its “zero-COVID” technique of attempting to comprise the virus final month in response to what it says was the altering nature of the outbreak. That got here after three years of lockdowns, quarantines and mass testing that prompted uncommon politically tinged protests in the streets in Beijing and different main cities.

The most optimistic forecasts say China’s enterprise and client exercise would possibly revive as early as the primary quarter of this 12 months. But earlier than that occurs, entrepreneurs and households face a painful squeeze from a surge in virus circumstances that has left employers with out sufficient wholesome staff and stored cautious prospects away from purchasing malls, eating places, hair salons and gymnasiums.

Some are reluctant as a result of they’ve diabetes, coronary heart issues and different well being problems, regardless of warnings from specialists that it’s much more pressing for them to be vaccinated as a result of the dangers of COVID-19 are extra severe than potential vaccine unwanted effects in nearly everybody.

A 76-year-old man taking his each day stroll across the Temple of Heaven with the help of a stick mentioned he needs to be vaccinated but has diabetes and hypertension.
Older individuals additionally felt little urgency as a result of low case numbers earlier than the most recent surge meant few confronted danger of an infection.
“Now, the families and relatives of the elderly people should make it clear to them that an infection can cause serious illness and even death,” mentioned Jiang Shibo of the Fudan University medical faculty in Shanghai.

Since the late Nineteen Nineties, China has been the massive beast within the world oil markets, driving demand for oil and different commodities that it used to energy double-digit financial progress yearly for a few years after which excessive single-figure progress for years after that. As late as 2017, China’s excessive price of financial progress nonetheless allowed it to overhaul the U.S. because the largest annual gross crude oil importer on the planet, having grow to be the world’s largest internet importer of complete petroleum and different liquid fuels in 2013. From 1992 to 1998, China’s annual financial progress price was mainly between 10 to fifteen p.c; from 1998 to 2004 between 8 to 10 p.c; from 2004 to 2010 between 10 to fifteen p.c once more; from 2010 to 2016 between 6 to 10 p.c, and from 2016 to 2022 between 5 to 7 p.c. From this level, nobody is aware of exactly the place it is going to go, besides that it’s more likely to go decrease, and the important thing purpose why it is going to go decrease is the nation’s dealing with of Covid – particularly its ‘zero-Covid’ coverage. However, every selection for China in the place it goes from right here when it comes to this coverage – whether or not to stay to it or loosen up this coverage additional – carries enormous dangers for the nation and for its chief, Xi Jinping, with whom the coverage is personally related. Whichever selection Xi makes, although, it’s virtually sure that it’ll end in an prolonged interval of decrease oil costs. This, though unwelcome for oil corporations and internet oil producing nations, will probably be extraordinarily welcome for a number of main developed economies and their residents who’ve seen excessive oil costs over the previous few months play a key function in destroying their financial savings, their pensions, and their high quality of life. Related: U.S. Oil, Gas Drilling Activity Goes Nowhere

To briefly recap, China’s zero-Covid coverage is predicated on ultra-tight lockdowns which might be launched throughout complete areas, together with main cities, instantly after a comparatively miniscule variety of Covid-19 circumstances are recognized. December 2021 noticed a refinement of the zero-Covid technique into one incorporating the concept of ‘dynamic clearing’, which offered native governments extra flexibility in imposing restrictions, permitting day by day will increase in symptomatic circumstances to be capped at round 200 on a nationwide foundation. On 11 November, the Chinese authorities unveiled 20 minor changes to the zero-Covid coverage, together with travellers from overseas requiring just one adverse PCR check inside 48 hours of boarding a flight to China as an alternative of two. Another was that overseas travellers would solely must quarantine for eight days, somewhat than 10, and one other was that inside China individuals thought of ‘close contacts of close contacts’ of Covid-19 carriers would not have to quarantine. The new pointers additionally forbade mass testing except ‘it is unclear how infections are spreading’ in an space.

Despite this slight enjoyable of the foundations, China’s President Xi is now going through a wave of public protests towards the still-tight Covid-19-related restrictions throughout the nation of a seriousness not seen since these of the mid-Nineteen Eighties that culminated within the 1989 massacre in Tiananmen Square. The newest spherical of those protests started after at the least 10 individuals burned to demise in an residence fireplace within the metropolis of Urumqi, the capital of jap Xinjiang province, with many blaming Covid lockdown guidelines for delaying any response from the emergency providers. According to a number of reside tv experiences on the time, the protests unfold to a number of huge cities, together with Shanghai and Beijing , with protesters shouting “Step down, Xi Jinping! Step down, Communist Party!”. It would appear to be that in simply the identical approach that the protests of the Nineteen Eighties had been largely pushed by the breaking of the understanding between the individuals and their authorities – that the previous are content material to go together with the managed regime of the latter offered that prosperity is given to them – so the present protests are too. For prosperity, although, financial progress is required, and the extra there’s the higher it’s for the federal government, and that is the place its downside is correct now.

President Xi is caught between the metaphorical rock and a tough place. On the one hand, if he sticks to something near zero-Covid restrictions – at this level, mainly any significant restrictions in any respect – then China’s financial progress will proceed to deteriorate. Additionally, the dimensions and scope of the protests towards him and his regime are more likely to improve. On the opposite hand, although, if he meaningfully loosens China’s Covid-19 management measures, then it’s extremely seemingly that huge numbers of China’s individuals will die, leading to precisely the identical appalling situation that China would face if it caught to tight management insurance policies for Covid-19.

The purpose why huge numbers of deaths would outcome from any significant lifting of Covid-19-related controls is that China nonetheless doesn’t have an efficient vaccine towards the illness or any variant thereof, regardless of provides from all main vaccine-producing nations to make such provides out there to it. China additionally doesn’t have an efficient post-infection anti-viral, and it nonetheless refuses to purchase in such provides from overseas suppliers, once more regardless of provides from a number of Western nations to make such anti-virals and post-infection remedies out there to it. Because of China’s preliminary response to the outbreak of Covid-19 in 2019 – draconian lockdowns throughout all areas – the nation nonetheless has huge numbers of its individuals with none vaccination towards any variant of the illness, even China’s personal vaccine (CoronaVac) and it has a vital scarcity of intensive care models (ICUs).

“There are 263 million people in China who are over the age of 60 and 35 million people over 80 and the susceptibility of the elderly to severe cases of Covid-19 is well known,” Rory Green, chief China economist for TS Lombard, in London, solely instructed OilWorth.com final week. “Of the over-80s, only 66 percent are vaccinated and only 40 percent have had three shots, and we know from detailed medical analysis of the Hong Kong outbreak that the CoronaVac shot has the equivalent efficacy of mRNA vaccines only after three doses, so this leaves approximately 37 million of the over-60s vulnerable to a widespread Covid outbreak,” he says. After vaccinations, the important thing consideration in coping with Covid-19 outbreaks is remedy for many who have been severely affected by the illness, and this implies ICU capability in hospitals, however China has a significant downside right here too. “Various studies put the number of ICUs per 100,000 people at between 3 and 6 in China – this compares with 2.3 in India and 34.7 in the U.S.,” Green tells OilWorth.com. “What the national level analysis misses is the regional variation in ICU coverage: the majority of ICUs in China are in the wealthier eastern provinces, which tend to have higher vaccination rates and better demographics, and local estimates factoring in city-level demographics and medical capacity posit that the most vulnerable city – Lijiang in Yunnan province – would need a 6000 percent increase in ICU capacity to adequately address an Omicron outbreak,” he underlines.

So, how dangerous might issues grow to be for China? Data from Hong Kong’s February 2022 outbreak is more likely to supply probably the most related comparability, thinks Green. “Returning to China CDC [Center for Disease Control] micro-estimates of city-level healthcare provision, if we use the Hong Kong February 2022 outbreak as the baseline for community spread and severity of cases, it is estimated that just 7.3 percent of China’s population lives in cities with sufficient ICU capacity, with the other 92.7 percent living in areas where ICU resources would be completely overwhelmed by the epidemic,” he says. “The shock to a relatively unvaccinated population could be substantial: based on Hong Kong’s mortality rate, China could experience 50,000 deaths per day at the height of an uncontrolled outbreak,” he highlights. In financial phrases, then: “In short, China remains well and truly stuck and we think real GDP, as measured by TS Lombard, this year will come in at 1.6 percent year-on-year,” concludes Green.

The removing of a lot of the financial efficiency behind China’s huge bid within the world oil markets would imply a a lot softer true demand backdrop to grease costs going ahead, notably with any concomitant diminution within the Russia-Ukraine War premium. This premium started final September when savvy market gamers started to purchase oil on the premise of observations from U.S. intelligence officers of extremely uncommon Russian navy actions on the Ukraine border after the conclusion of the joint Russia-Belarus navy workouts that had taken place. Before this, oil had been buying and selling persistently across the US$65 per barrel of Brent stage. This stage mirrored the equilibrium value that factored within the already evident weaker demand from China. As this Russia-Ukraine warfare premium declines as Europe continues to substitute vitality from Russia with vitality from different sources, as it is going to, this US$65 per barrel stage is more likely to be the bottom level for oil costs from then.
