Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe and his co-accused, Tobias Tamirepi Matonhodze, have pleaded guilty to multiple charges in a case that has drawn serious attention in Johannesburg.

The pair appeared before the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court, where they admitted to the offences brought against them. Their convictions mark a significant development in the case, with sentencing proceedings now scheduled for April 24, 2026.

Mugabe pleaded guilty to violating immigration laws and pointing a firearm. Matonhodze, on the other hand, admitted to a string of charges including attempted murder, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, defeating the ends of justice, and breaching immigration regulations.

The charges are linked to a February 19, 2026 incident at Mugabe’s residence in Hyde Park. An altercation reportedly broke out between the accused and a security guard. The situation escalated, leading to the guard being assaulted and shot in the back as he tried to escape. He was later found outside the property by another security guard, who quickly alerted authorities.

The case has highlighted concerns around violent incidents and illegal firearm possession. Authorities say they remain focused on ensuring accountability and justice, particularly in cases involving serious harm.

Isaac had been responding to what seemed like a routine ride request in Pretoria West on February 11 when he was brutally attacked. Later, his stolen car and his lifeless body were discovered abandoned in Atteridgeville, leaving his family and community in shock.

The horrific incident was caught on video and quickly spread across social media, igniting widespread anger and calls for justice. The accused—Dikeledi Tears Phela, Gositsiane Machidi, and McClaren Mushwana—chose not to seek bail and will stay in custody as the case unfolds.

They’re facing serious charges of premeditated murder and aggravated robbery tied to this senseless attack.

Outside the courthouse, fellow e-hailing drivers and supporters gathered in a peaceful protest, urging authorities to do more to protect those working on ride-sharing apps. Chants of “Justice for Isaac” echoed through the air as the hearing began.

Isaac had borrowed the car to earn some extra cash while completing his internship in automotive mechanical engineering in Centurion, which was set to wrap up soon. Tragically, he would have celebrated his birthday on March 12.

The group, which includes a 39-year-old woman believed to be central to the operation, faces charges under the Regulation of Foreign Military Assistance Act. This law bans South Africans from offering or accepting military aid abroad without official permission.

Authorities allege the woman made multiple trips to Russia starting in September 2025, along with visits to other nations, before her arrest in December. Four of the suspects were detained at a major international airport while reportedly heading to Russia, with the fifth apprehended at his residence.

Prosecutors claim the recruits were unemployed young men drawn into the scheme. Bail was set at varying amounts, ranging from 5,000 to 30,000 rand, with conditions including passport surrender and a ban on leaving the country.

The investigation continues, with the court appearance focused on advancing the proceedings. This incident highlights the risks of unauthorized involvement in international conflicts and the strict enforcement of national regulations designed to prevent such activities.

Seven learners from Milnerton High School may soon be expelled as education authorities consider disciplinary recommendations following a disturbing bullying incident that sparked national outrage and criminal charges.

The Western Cape Department of Education has confirmed that the school’s internal disciplinary process has been completed. After hearings held late last year, the school’s disciplinary committee recommended that seven learners be expelled. The final decision now rests with the Head of Department, who is reviewing the submitted findings.

The case stems from a widely shared video recorded in October, which showed a 16-year-old Grade 10 learner being violently assaulted and humiliated by fellow pupils. The footage, which circulated rapidly on social media, depicted the victim being slapped and punched during what authorities described as a severe bullying incident. Some of the accused learners are reportedly linked to the school’s rugby structures.

Eight learners were subsequently charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and made their first court appearance in October 2025. They were released on bail and warning under strict conditions, including being barred from the school premises, avoiding contact with witnesses and complainants, and surrendering their mobile phones to investigators.

To allow the accused learners to complete their final examinations, alternative arrangements were made for them to study from home. They are expected to appear in court again on Tuesday, 20 January 2026.

The incident has reignited serious concerns about bullying, violence, and accountability in South African schools. Parents, civil society groups, and education activists have called for decisive action, warning that unchecked bullying can have long-lasting emotional and psychological effects on victims.

Advocates for the bullied learner have welcomed the disciplinary committee’s recommendation, describing it as an important step toward justice. They argue that schools must remain safe spaces for learning and growth, with zero tolerance for violence and intimidation.

While the disciplinary process is nearing its conclusion, supporters of the victim stress that the emotional trauma caused by the incident will take much longer to heal. As the legal process continues, many hope the case will serve as a strong warning and a turning point in how bullying is addressed in schools across the country.

South African Church Defenders (SACD) have moved to clarify the scope of their legal challenge against the CRL Rights Commission, accusing the commission of misrepresenting the nature of the court case and deepening divisions within religious communities.

Addressing the media, SACD leaders rejected claims that their court action seeks to prevent different faith groups from meeting or being represented together. They said such assertions are misleading and are not reflected in their legal papers.

According to SACD, the court application is narrowly focused on three key issues. The organisation is seeking a declaration that the Section 22 Committee established by the CRL was unlawful, that all actions taken by the committee are invalid, and that the committee must be disbanded. These demands, they said, have already been submitted to Parliament and included in a memorandum to the Presidency.

SACD also confirmed that it is challenging the CRL’s communication with state security structures that reportedly labelled charismatic churches as a domestic threat. The organisation argues that this characterisation has contributed to suspicion, fear, and unnecessary tension among religious communities.

At the centre of the case, SACD said, is the protection of constitutional rights guaranteed under Sections 15, 18, and 31 of the Constitution, which safeguard freedom of religion, freedom of association, and the collective rights of religious communities.

Church leaders warned that recent statements and actions by the CRL risk reviving divisions and disruptions seen in previous years, raising concerns about possible witch hunts against pastors. They questioned why alleged victims are not being referred to existing investigative and justice structures if credible information already exists.

SACD also raised concerns about the potential cost and scope of expanding Section 22 committees across multiple faith groups, arguing that such an approach could place an unnecessary burden on public resources while failing to address genuine cases of criminal conduct.

The organisation stressed that it does not oppose accountability or justice, but insists that criminal matters should be handled by established law enforcement and judicial bodies rather than through broad regulatory measures targeting religious communities.

In closing, South African Church Defenders said they will continue to pursue both legal action and peaceful protest to oppose what they describe as unconstitutional overreach. The group reaffirmed its commitment to defending religious freedom and called on believers across the country to remain informed, united, and engaged.

A Bloemfontein police officer who allegedly kidnapped a Martie du Plessis Special School learner is due back in the local magistrate’s court early next year Sgt Nzima Adoons his case was postponed to Friday, 16 January, for final investigations. He is facing charges of extortion and the kidnapping of Kamogelo Baukudi, 19.

Adoons was granted bail of R2,000 in July, with strict conditions. He may not interfere with the investigation or intimidate state witnesses. He must also report to his nearest police station every Friday and Sunday.

Kamogelo was allegedly kidnapped after school in June by men who impersonated police officers. After the learner was picked up by a driver working for one of his parents in a Suzuki, the alleged kidnappers followed and stopped them near Vereeniging Drive.

Daniel Malebatso, the driver, alleges he heard a siren behind them and the occupants of a white Toyota Hilux double-cab bakkie, fitted with blue “police lights”, pulled them over.

Kamogelo and Malebatso were separated, and Malebatso was told to drive ahead to the Park Road police station while they would follow with Kamogelo. The Toyota Hilux, however, vanished from sight when a truck passed between the Suzuki and the Hilux.

“The matter of Nzima Adoons has been postponed to January for further investigation,” said Free State NPA spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane. “He is facing charges of extortion, as well as kidnapping, and he is out on bail.”

Adoons was linked to the case by the tracker of the vehicle he drove on the day that Kamogelo was kidnapped. This was revealed by investigating officer Lt. Col. Kelaotswe Lebodi when he testified.

Lebodi testified in October that the vehicle tracker apparently placed him at the exact location where Kamogelo was last seen. Five other suspects were arrested in connection with the kidnapping: three at a house in Kanana, Wepener, and two others on the road between Kwetla and Wepener with the victim in their company.

The community of Khayelitsha is reeling after the horrific killing of 16-year-old Kwakhanya Mhlanganisi, a teenager whose life was cut short in a brutal attack that residents believe may have been driven by homophobia.

On Monday, dozens of people gathered outside the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court, carrying placards and calling for justice as a 17-year-old boy appeared in connection with the murder. The case was postponed to December 10 for a bail application, with the State indicating it will oppose his release.

For the Mhlanganisi family, the pain is unbearable. Kwakhanya’s aunt, Nontombi Mthegeni, described the moments leading up to the attack. She said Kwakhanya had stepped out on Wednesday night to look for his sister when he encountered a group of teenagers. Residents later told her that the teens targeted him, insulted him, and tried to take his drink by force.

What followed was a chase through the informal settlement. According to what the family was told, the group beat Kwakhanya with bricks until he collapsed. Even after he fainted, the assault continued. His body was later burned.

His mother was called to the scene the next morning—faced with the devastating sight no parent should ever witness.

“We feel deeply hurt. Kwakhanya was just a child, only 16. We were expecting a bright future for him,” Mthegeni said. She added that the family knew and accepted that Kwakhanya was gay.

Community activists say the attack has highlighted just how unsafe LGBTQ+ youths still are. Members of the Khayelitsha Queer Hub joined Monday’s protest, insisting that the violence was rooted in homophobia.

“Our Constitution may protect LGBTQ+ people on paper, but in our daily lives, we are not safe,” said activist Sibusiso Nqunqeka. “We want justice for Kwakhanya and real protection for our community.”

The tragedy has left Khayelitsha shaken, as residents call for accountability, stronger policing, and better safeguarding of LGBTQ+ youth.

Gcina who played the role of Khanyisile Majola-Ndlovu in the now defunct daily telenovela will know her fate when she files her documents opposing the eviction and the sale of her house which ia situated in Glenanda in the South of Johannesburg.

Gcina told MDN News that justice in South Africa was the thing of the past as she is now at the mercy of the Booysens Magistrate’s Court where she will be filing her documents.

“Me and my family are not doing so well as the case is taking its toll on me. I have not secured a lawyer as yet and I am really worried because the presiding magistrate is getting more and more impatient with me. I am going back to court next week and I am hoping that the magistrate will be willing to look into my submission and hear my prayers,” she said.

Gcina said that the situation was not great as they are currently sharing the yard with people who were placed by the new owner.

“Life is not great since we are sharing our yard with people who were forcibly placed here by the so-called new owner. They bully, harass and try to intimidate us in different ways, including sexual harassment. The Mondeor police are not willing to do anything. The Booysens Magistrate’s Court has denied us the justice we deserve time and again,” said the sobbing actress.

Gcina further said that she was there at the Booysens Magistrate’s Court to file some documents yesterday (Friday) but the clerk turned her away citing a minor technicality on the cover of her application.

“The presiding magistrate’s wasn’t willing to take into account that I am a lay person and therefore cannot draft a document the same way a Law Practitioner would. Instead he told me to come back on Monday but said even then my documents won’t be filed because it’s gonna be too late to do so.

“I am now worried that the magistrate might not be willing to read my application on the day I go to court and that might jeopardize my chance to defend myself in court. I’m pleading to a good Samaritan lawyer or law practioner to help me save my house,” she said.

A Cape Town man is challenging a court’s finding that he is the biological father of a child, despite several DNA tests confirming the link.

The man, whose identity is withheld to protect the child, took his case to the Western Cape High Court after the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court ruled that he was the father. Representing himself, he argued that it had not been proven “beyond reasonable doubt” that he is the child’s biological parent.

The case dates back to 2001, when the first paternity test indicated that he was not the father. Years later, in 2016, the child’s mother approached the maintenance court, insisting that he was indeed the biological parent. A second test was ordered in 2017, because the earlier test did not meet accreditation standards. This time, the results showed that he was the father.

A new magistrate later took over the matter and inexplicably ordered a third test in 2019, which again confirmed paternity. The case was then reassigned, and yet another magistrate requested a fourth DNA test. The man objected, bringing an application to have the magistrate recused and the directive set aside. A fourth magistrate eventually ruled that another test was unnecessary and that the court would work with the evidence already on record.

After hearing the case, the court ruled once more that the man was the father.

Still unhappy, he turned to the High Court, arguing that the DNA results were never properly introduced into evidence and should not have carried weight unless supported by expert testimony. He also claimed that the labs that conducted the later tests were not located in the Western Cape and had compared his results to the wrong population group.

He acknowledged knowing the mother years ago but denied ever being romantically involved with her. He said she used to visit his bar in 1999 but that he banned her after she stole a photo—something she later returned. He insisted he had no contact with her again until 2001, when his wife informed him that the woman was claiming he was the father of her four-month-old baby.

The mother’s timeline was inconsistent in several areas, but she remained firm that she and the man were intimate in early August 2000, when the child was conceived.

After reviewing the case, the High Court concluded that even if the maintenance court made errors in handling the DNA evidence, it still reached the correct conclusion. The judges noted that the second and third DNA tests showed a high probability that he was the father, and that DNA testing is a well-established scientific method with strong evidential value.

His appeal was dismissed.

Andre McKechnie, who is currently behind bars in Victoria, says the long-standing ban on Vegemite in the state’s prisons is unfair and strips him of the chance to enjoy a part of his national culture. Vegemite has been off-limits in Victoria’s jails since 2006 because officials believe inmates could use the strong-smelling spread to hide contraband or even ferment alcohol.

McKechnie, now 54, argues that the ban goes too far. In his lawsuit, he claims the restriction violates his right to cultural expression as an Australian and that prison authorities have failed to provide food that supports his well-being. He wants the ban scrapped entirely.

His case is expected to go to trial next year.

Vegemite has been a beloved — and sometimes divisive — part of Australian life since it first appeared in 1923. The thick, salty, yeast-based spread is deeply tied to Australia’s identity, especially in its birthplace, Melbourne. Yet for all its cultural weight, the spread has also found itself at the centre of quirky controversies over the years, including taste debates and even international disputes over its sale.

Whether adored or avoided, Vegemite remains a powerful symbol of Australian culture — and for McKechnie, it’s something worth fighting for, even from behind bars.
