Not everyone agrees with the approach. A prominent Islamic cleric strongly criticised the involvement of foreign forces, warning that continued cooperation with the US could turn Nigeria into a battleground for global power struggles. He urged the government to seek security partnerships with more neutral countries and cautioned that foreign intervention could deepen religious divisions and undermine sovereignty.

The Defence Headquarters later confirmed the airstrikes, stating that they were carried out with federal approval and based on credible intelligence. Military officials said the operation was carefully planned to weaken terrorist capabilities while minimising harm to civilians.

Several retired military officers welcomed the strikes, describing them as a positive step in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism. They stressed, however, that operations must remain precise and focused on criminals and their sponsors, not innocent citizens.

US lawmakers also praised the strikes, calling them a decisive move to halt the killing of Christians and restore security in affected communities. They described the operation as a first step toward ending years of bloodshed and instability.

As Nigeria watches events unfold, the airstrikes have opened a new chapter in the country’s long-running battle with terrorism — one filled with both hope for improved security and fear of unintended consequences.

He also highlighted the growing challenge of non-state actors gaining access to advanced military technologies and called for greater solidarity among African air forces to protect the continent’s collective security interests.

Representing the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal I.H. Etukudo described the visit as a milestone in fostering intra-African defence collaboration. He reaffirmed the NAF’s dedication to forming strategic partnerships focused on innovation, capacity building, and operational excellence.

The visit strengthened bilateral ties between Nigeria and South Africa, marking a significant step toward a safer, more united Africa through cooperation in air power and counter-terrorism initiatives.

The attacks were carried out in Dikwa, Mafa, and Gajibo in Borno State, as well as Katarko in Yobe State. In a statement, the army revealed that the terrorists used advanced weapons, including armed drones and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), to target military positions.

Some buildings and vehicles were damaged, and a section of the defenses in Mafa and Dikwa was briefly breached before troops regained full control. The military noted that the use of armed drones by the attackers shows their growing sophistication despite ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.

Troops reportedly fought back with superior firepower, recovering 38 AK-47 rifles, seven PKT machine guns, five RPG tubes, two GPMGs, and several grenades, along with thousands of rounds of ammunition. Ground troops, supported by air strikes, pursued fleeing terrorists, leaving dozens wounded.

Intelligence reports indicated that some of the attackers infiltrated from Cameroon, while others came from the notorious Timbuktu Triangle. Although a few soldiers sustained injuries, the army emphasized that they are receiving medical treatment and that no position was lost.

Military authorities praised the courage and professionalism of the troops, reaffirming their commitment to defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity and maintaining pressure on insurgents across the region.
