The mass funeral of the six family members who tragically lost their lives in the horrific N2 road crash in Mtubatuba on Friday, 30 January, will be held at Mawombe Stadium – Umfolozi Local Municipality on Sunday,sa 8 February 2026.

The Nyatee Foundation has expressed its profound sorrow and deepest condolences to the loved ones. The lives lost include Mama Nokuphakama “MaMdletshe” Mnyango (85), Mama Makhosi kaMnyango Mthembu (52), Mvuyani Gcaleka (43), Senamile Buthelezi (29), Ayanda Pearl Mthembu (12), and Banzi Buthelezi (6).

This devastating incident has left an entire community in mourning and disbelief, as families grapple with an immeasurable loss that words alone cannot heal.

Moved by compassion and a deep sense of humanity, the Nyatee Foundation recently visited the bereaved families to offer heartfelt support, comfort, and solidarity during this incredibly painful time. The Foundation’s delegation spent time with the families, listening to their stories, sharing in their grief, and offering emotional, spiritual, and material support to help ease the burden of their suffering. The Nyatee Foundation has also extended its hand towards assisting with burial arrangements and thereafter.

“This is not just a tragedy; it is a wound that cuts through the heart of the community. The loss of six lives in one family is unimaginable. No parent, child, sibling, or relative should ever have to endure such pain. As a Foundation, we believe that compassion must move beyond words into action. Our presence here is a commitment to walk alongside these families, not only today, but in the days, weeks, and months ahead,” Nyatee Foundation spokesperson, Thobile Mchunu, shared.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Lindelani Gcaleka said they are at a loss for words.

“It has been devastating. I do not have the words to describe what we witnessed at the scene of the accident. The car was a total write-off, and some of the members were disfigured. We do not wish this even on our enemies. We wake up every day thinking that it is a lie. We are truly heartbroken.”

The Nyatee Foundation emphasized the importance of collective care, unity, and community healing, calling on local leaders, organisations, faith-based institutions, and community members to come together in love and support for the grieving families. The Foundation highlighted that healing is a journey that requires patience, understanding, and consistent support.

Beyond the visit, the Nyatee Foundation has committed to ongoing assistance, ensuring that the family is not left alone to face the long road of recovery and healing. This support forms part of the Foundation’s broader mission to serve communities in times of crisis, restore dignity, and uphold the values of empathy, compassion, and social responsibility

“In moments like these, humanity must speak louder than despair. We stand in solidarity with the families of Mtubatuba. Their pain is our pain, and their healing matters to all of us.”

A small passenger plane went down in a remote mountainous region of northern Colombia, tragically claiming the lives of everyone on board all 15 people, including crew and passengers.

The aircraft, a Beechcraft 1900 operated by the state airline Satena, took off from Cúcuta and was on a short domestic flight to Ocaña near the Venezuelan border. It disappeared from radar and lost contact with air traffic control just minutes after departure, around midday on Wednesday. Search teams, supported by the armed forces, scoured the rugged terrain home to challenging weather and areas influenced by armed groups like the ELN and eventually located the wreckage.

Among the victims were prominent figures: Diógenes Quintero Amaya, a dedicated lawmaker and human rights advocate who represented conflict victims in Colombia’s Congress, and Carlos Salcedo, a social leader campaigning for a congressional seat in upcoming elections. Tributes poured in, remembering Quintero as a lifelong servant to those affected by violence and displacement.

President Gustavo Petro expressed deep sorrow for the families, and a support hotline was quickly established to help relatives cope with the loss. Recovery efforts continue in the difficult landscape, as authorities begin investigating what led to this devastating accident.

In a statement it announced through social media that the sad news of her passing away happened on Tuesday.

“It is with deep sorrow and profound shock that we announce the untimely passing of Dr Jennifer Anne Glennie on 2 December 2025 in a tragic car accident,” the statement reads.

Manamela extended his deepest and most heartfelt condolences to Glennie’s family, friends, colleagues, and the entire higher education sector.

He said that her passing represents a significant loss to our country.

“Ms Glennie was a visionary leader whose lifelong passion for education, particularly in distance learning, has left an indelible mark. From the dark days of apartheid, her work was steadfastly committed to expanding access, equity, and justice in education. She was a pioneering force in developing contextually appropriate, activity-based learning materials and innovative student support mechanisms that transformed the landscape of South Africa’s distance education,” he said.

Manamela said her exceptional contributions were far reaching.

“She played a key role in shaping the national higher education architecture, including leadership in establishing the Council on Higher Education, a two-decade contribution to the Council of the University of South Africa (Unisa), and representing South Africa on the Commonwealth of Learning. She was also instrumental in the founding of Sol Plaatje University,” he said.

Manamela further said that Glennie was at the forefront of promoting Open Educational Resources (OER), to create meaningful educational opportunities for poor and marginalised groups.

“The higher education sector would not be what it is today without the dedication of pioneers like Jennifer Glennie. Her deep love for the people of this country and her abhorrence for injustice touched and improved many lives. Her role in expanding access to higher education for Africans and her legacy will continue to inspire us,” said Manamela.

From the years of resistance, clandestine work, and sacrifice, Comrade Mthethwa contributed to the collective efforts that won our democracy. In the post-1994 era, he accepted the responsibilities of shaping the new South Africa.

He served in multiple ministerial portfolios, including:

Minister of Safety and Security between 2008 and 2009,

Minister of Police between May 2009 to May 2014,

Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture between May 2019 and March 2023.

In every role, he sought to bring transformation, cohesion, and dignity to our people. His commitment to the nation was visible in all material times.

As a member of the ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Working Committee (NWC) between 2007 and 2022, he played a role in guiding the direction of our movement. His presence will be sorely missed in our ranks, but his legacy endures: in the policies he advanced, the institutions he helped build, and the values he upheld.

We salute his life of sacrifice and leadership. We pledge to support his family in their grief, and to honour him by redoubling our efforts to build the South Africa he believed in—a National Democratic Society.

Pope Leo XIV has expressed deep sorrow following a tragic incident in Gaza City, where three people lost their lives after a shell struck the Holy Family Church. The victims had been seeking refuge inside the Catholic church compound, which has been sheltering many displaced Christian families since the start of the war.

The Pope conveyed his condolences through a message, describing his profound sadness over the loss of life and injuries. He assured the grieving parish community, including the lightly injured priest Father Gabriele Romanelli, of his closeness in prayer. He once again urged for an immediate ceasefire and emphasized the urgent need for peace, reconciliation, and dialogue in the region.

Father Romanelli, visibly shaken, was seen tending to one of the injured at a nearby hospital after the strike. The explosion, believed to have been caused by a tank shell, caused severe damage to the church roof and scattered debris throughout the courtyard. At the time of the incident, several people were outside the main building, including two elderly women who were seated in a tent used for psychosocial support. They sustained critical injuries and were rushed to the hospital after a delay in emergency services.

Three young individuals standing near the church entrance were also seriously wounded. Despite desperate efforts to save them, three people ultimately died, with others still recovering from serious and critical injuries. Among those who lost their lives were Saad Salameh, a 60-year-old janitor, and 84-year-old Fumayya Ayyad.

Eyewitnesses shared that Father Romanelli had warned people to remain indoors due to the presence of nearby tanks and ongoing shelling. His caution likely prevented further tragedy, with some estimating that dozens more could have been killed had people been outside at the time.

The attack occurred in a part of Gaza where residents had previously been told to evacuate. At the time, around 600 displaced individuals, including children and people with special needs, were seeking safety inside the church compound.

Religious leaders and humanitarian organizations condemned the attack, describing it as a violation of human dignity and the sanctity of life and sacred places. Many are calling for urgent international action to protect civilians and ensure that places of worship remain safe havens in times of conflict.

The recent escalation of violence continues to take a heavy toll. On the same day, over 20 people were reported killed across Gaza. Among the victims were men protecting aid trucks and families, including children, who died in other attacks.

The war in Gaza erupted after the events of October 2023, leading to tens of thousands of deaths and a humanitarian crisis that continues to unfold. As the region endures more suffering, the voices for peace, including that of the Pope, grow ever more urgent.
