The incident is said to have occurred at Msintsi Location near Ntabozuko, outside KuGompo, formerly known as East London.

Seven children, aged between four and seven, were admitted to Cecilia Makiwane Hospital on Saturday after suddenly falling ill.

Health officials say six of the children are from Msintsi, while one child is from NU3 in Mdantsane.

The children reportedly showed symptoms including vomiting, diarrhoea and dizziness. Despite emergency medical efforts, two children were declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

Five children are still receiving medical care. One child has been placed on a ventilator and transferred to Frere Hospital for specialised treatment, while the remaining four are reported to be in stable condition and continue to be monitored.

Preliminary information provided by families suggests that six of the children had been playing together and had eaten snacks before becoming ill.

The circumstances surrounding the illness of the child from Mdantsane are still being investigated.

The cause of the suspected food poisoning has not yet been confirmed.

The Eastern Cape Department of Health says emergency and outbreak response protocols were immediately activated, and environmental health practitioners have been deployed to identify the source of the contamination.

The fire broke out in the Wang Fuk Court housing complex on Wednesday afternoon, spreading rapidly through buildings that were under renovation. Many of the people living in the estate are elderly, making evacuation even more difficult.

More than 760 firefighters were deployed as towering flames and thick grey smoke engulfed the skyline. Seven of the estate’s eight towers have been affected. Rescue efforts have been severely hampered by extreme heat and falling debris, with firefighters struggling to enter the upper floors of the 31-storey blocks.

Tragically, firefighter Ho Wai-ho, 37, was among those who died after losing contact with his team during the operation.

Authorities say materials found outside the buildings — including plastic sheets, mesh, and Styrofoam — may have accelerated the spread of the blaze. Three men have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter, and officials believe negligence played a major role in the disaster.

Hospitals across the city are treating dozens of injured residents, with many in serious condition. Temporary shelters were opened, though some had to be relocated due to the fire’s intensity. Throughout the night, families continued arriving at shelters, desperately searching for missing relatives.

The community remains surrounded by closed roads and diverted bus routes as the fire continues to burn. The true scale of the destruction has yet to be determined, but the emotional toll is already immense.

According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, Thando’s mother, Ayanda Ngwenyama, reported her missing on Tuesday after she failed to return home from her father’s house on Monday evening.

The search for the little girl went through the night, with desperate neighbours joining the effort. But the following morning, a chilling message arrived — an unknown sender demanded R30,000, allegedly owed by Thando’s father, in exchange for her safety.

Police launched an urgent investigation, tracing the number to the Botleng area and questioning several people, including known loan sharks. Sadly, the search ended in tragedy when a neighbour discovered the child’s body under rubble, noticing her tiny legs sticking out behind a shack.

Authorities rushed to the scene, and a murder case was opened. Police have since launched a manhunt for those responsible.

Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi condemned the senseless killing, saying:

> “People have lost their sense of humanity. How can anyone kill an innocent young girl who had her whole future ahead of her? We will not rest until the suspects are behind bars.”
