Strong words from Fadiel Adams as he calls out General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi over what he says are misplaced priorities in law enforcement.

Adams highlights the ongoing crisis in the Cape Flats, where communities continue to struggle with crime and lack of proper policing. He questions why resources are being directed elsewhere instead of strengthening intelligence and safety in high-risk areas.

“Our kids also have a chance to live,” Adams said, expressing frustration over what he described as neglect. He further claimed that current lives are being ignored while critical funding is not reaching the communities that need it most.

According to police reports, approximately 06:15, police responded to a complaint of a shooting at the taxi rank on Delft Main Road, Voorbrug.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers found the bodies of two men, aged 55 and 58, who had sustained gunshot wounds.

Both victims were declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel.

A third victim, aged 38, was transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment but later succumbed to his injuries.

Preliminary reports indicate that a Toyota Quantum stopped at the taxi rank and shots were fired from inside the vehicle. The suspects thereafter fled the scene.

Detectives attached to the Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Unit have taken over the investigation and are probing three counts of murder. The motive for the attack is believed to be possibly related to the taxi industry.

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is kindly requested to contact CrimeStop on 08600 10111 or alternatively make use of the MySAPSApp. All information will be treated with the strictest confidentiality.

In the busy Warwick Avenue area of Durban, people living in a block of flats on Douglas Lane say they’ve had enough.

Homeless individuals struggling with drug addiction have set up makeshift shelters right on the road and pavements outside their building, turning the spot into what feels like an open drug den.

Residents describe the scene as heartbreaking and frightening. The encampment has popped up after the municipality cleared similar setups from nearby vacant plots on Milton Road, Acorn Road, and Bentley Street—areas that were fenced off following clean-up operations. With those spots now blocked, the group moved to this pavement, close to a mini-bus taxi rank and two small cottages.

One resident, who asked not to be named, shared her daily fears: “From our balcony and windows, we see it all. They use drugs openly in front of us. We’re scared to leave for work or let our kids go to school because of possible harassment. They move like zombies, and the smell outside is terrible.”

A local businessman echoed the worry, explaining how it’s hurting his livelihood. “Customers avoid this road now because they’re afraid. There’s even a crèche just across the street—parents are terrified when dropping off their children. These people wander around looking for someone to rob. We depend on foot traffic from the taxi rank, but paying for extra security just isn’t worth it anymore.”

What makes the situation even more frustrating for locals is that this encampment is directly in view of the eThekwini Municipality’s own Urban Renewal Project Centre, home to the Inner-city Regeneration and Urban Management Programme (ITRUMP) offices.

The municipality says it has already cleared and fenced the vacant Douglas Lane property through its service departments. Officials add that metro police carry out regular operations to tackle unlawful occupation and keep the area safe. They’re also looking into more ways to secure empty land, though this depends on available budget.

Back in February 2026, eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba visited the long-troubled Che Guevara Road site (previously Moore Road) and promised a stronger, multi-department approach to homelessness—one built on compassion, family reconnection, access to social services, and real long-term support.

As part of those efforts, work continues on the new Sakhithemba Homeless Shelter in Illovo. The facility will offer life-skills training, substance abuse support, and programmes to help people rebuild their lives and reintegrate into the community with dignity.

For now, though, residents in Warwick Avenue continue to call for faster, more visible action on their doorstep.

The comfort packs include toiletries and other goodies which will assist in restoring dignity and providing immediate care to victims of crime, mostly at Victim Friendly Rooms (VFRs) at police stations.

In his handover speech, AVBOB’s General Manager for Tied Sales, Vusi Khathi said that when leaders gather with a purpose, survivors feel supported.

He said that AVBOB realised in 2020 that they needed to stand up and contribute to the fight against GBVF, whose statistics soared during the lockdown to a point where GBVF was declared a second pandemic after COVID-19.

“The magnitude of gender-based violence in South Africa cannot be addressed through once-off campaigns or symbolic statements. It calls for ongoing, coordinated efforts between government, civil society, communities, as well as the private sector to drive meaningful and lasting change.

“One thousand comfort packs for victims and survivors of gender-based violence were formally handed over to the SAPS in KZN to help restore dignity during a time of need. The handover was followed by a pledge-signing ceremony where all parties reaffirmed their shared and unwavering commitment to eradicate the scourge of GBVF+. Today’s launch is more than the start of a programme it is a clear statement of intent.

“By partnering with law enforcement and the justice department, we are committing to practical, measurable action that strengthens prevention, supports survivors, and helps ensure accountability. Real change requires collaboration, consistency, and courage. We are proud to stand alongside our partners in building safer communities for all,” said Khathi.

The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Crime Detection, Major General Anthony Gopaul, who represented the Provincial Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, said that the horrific stories of gender-based violence, especially rape and domestic violence-related incidents, should trigger all of us to take action.

“We thank AVBOB for not being a bystander, but for taking a firm stand and partnering with the SAPS in KwaZulu-Natal to bring relief to the victims of GBVF. We acknowledge all partners who work with us to prevent the scourge of GBVF and who also work hard to preserve the dignity of victims. We thank the nurses at hospitals, social workers and other professionals at Thuthuzela Centres and other non-profit organisations that go out of their way to help the victims of GBVF get justice and heal their emotional wounds,” said Gopaul.

Gopaul added that sometimes victims of GBVF do not want to see any woman or man in uniform during their time of distress, and at that time social workers and nurses play a key role in helping victims understand the process of attaining justice.

“We make a call to all police officers who respond to GBVF cases or those who encounter GBVF victims at police stations not to inflict secondary victimisation on victims. Police must show compassion and care, make victims feel supported, and assure them that they will get justice. Men must step up and have serious conversations with each other.

“We must teach our daughters and sisters to walk away from abusive relationships, not to tolerate any form of abuse and disrespect, and to instil confidence in them,” said Gopaul.

He further announced that 500 comfort packs will be handed over to FCS units, 250 will go to Social Crime Prevention, and the remaining 250 comfort packs will be kept at Victim Friendly Rooms across the province.

A 39-year-old male, who is also a foreign national and believed to be a businessman, was allegedly shot and killed by two unknown male suspects inside a shop at one of the supermarkets in a shopping complex under the Bolobedu policing area in Limpopo on Monday.

It is alleged that the man was with his companions at the time of the incident.

Limpopo Police spokesperson, Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said it is reported that police were alerted about a shooting incident and rushed to the crime scene.

“Upon arrival they found the victim laying on the floor with multiple gunshots on the body. The members of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were summoned and the male victim was certified dead upon their arrival at the scene.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that two unknown male suspects entered the shop armed with a firearm and shot the deceased without saying a word. Afterward, the duo fled the scene, driving a white Ford Fiesta motor vehicle with an unknown Gauteng registration number,” said Mashaba.

Mashaba said the motive of the incident is not known at this stage.

“A manhunt of the two male suspects is ongoing and police request anyone with information that can lead to their apprehension to contact the Investigating Officer, Sergeant Delton Makhubele on 083 357 3896, CrimeStop number 08600 10111, nearest police station or MySAPSApp,” said Mashaba.

The City of Ekurhuleni has appointed Moja Love’s Sizok’thola presenter and ActionSA’s Ekurhuleni mayoral candidate, Xolani Khumalo, as the new Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Services and By-Law Enforcement, following a mayoral committee reshuffle announced on Tuesday night.

The announcement landed with immediate force. Social media lit up within hours, splitting into two familiar camps. On one side were residents who sounded genuinely hopeful, saying they want firmer by-law enforcement and a metro that finally feels managed. On the other were those who warned that the appointment brings heavy political baggage and unavoidable controversy into a portfolio already under pressure.

A reshuffle that shifts the coalition picture

The reshuffle, led by Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, has also unsettled the metro’s already delicate coalition landscape. In local government, these changes are rarely just administrative. They carry political meaning, and they often signal new alliances, new power balances, and new tensions waiting to surface.

That tension quickly became visible, with ActionSA publicly distancing itself from the appointment and indicating that Khumalo would not be joining the mayoral committee. The fallout has added to broader uncertainty inside the coalition arrangement, with parties jostling for position while residents watch and ask a blunt question: will any of this translate into better governance?

Public expectations: illegal land occupation, by-law violations, and safety

Khumalo’s new portfolio places him at the centre of issues that affect people’s daily lives in an immediate, street-level way. This is the department residents look to when they want action on by-law compliance, public cleanliness, safer neighbourhoods, and visible enforcement that does not fade after the cameras move on.

Supporters argue that his appointment could bring a tougher stance on illegal dumping, alleged land invasions, non-compliance with municipal regulations, and crime hotspots that have long frustrated communities. There is a growing sense across the metro that patience is thinning, and people want practical, consistent enforcement that restores order without turning into chaos.

Even among those welcoming the move, the optimism comes with caution. Many are saying the same thing in different words: it is one thing to appoint a high-profile figure, but the real proof will be in the first clear plan, the first measurable results, and the first signs that the metro is serious about follow-through.

Legal controversy follows Khumalo into office

Khumalo is a familiar face to South Africans because of Sizok’thola, a programme focused on crime and community safety where he has built a national profile confronting alleged drug dealers and exposing suspected criminal networks. For many viewers, that visibility has made him a symbol of direct action, someone unafraid to go where others hesitate.

But his public profile has also been shaped by repeated legal controversy. In recent weeks, the Nigerian Union South Africa called for the arrest of Khumalo and the Sizok’thola crew, alleging they assaulted seven individuals during a drug-related operation where Emeka Clement Uzor was shot and killed following allegations that he was a drug kingpin.

This is not Khumalo’s first encounter with law enforcement. Earlier this year, he handed himself over to SAPS and was charged with assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and pointing a firearm. Despite the allegations, ActionSA previously said it would not suspend him.

Despite the allegations, ActionSA previously said it would not suspend him, describing the charges as false and politically motivated.

In 2024, his activism became entangled in a high-profile legal case following a confrontation in Katlehong that resulted in the death of Robert “Kicks” Varrie, a suspected drug dealer.

What happens next

With the appointment now public, attention shifts to what comes next. Residents want to see official plans, clear priorities, and a visible approach to enforcement that feels lawful, consistent, and effective. They also want reassurance that political turbulence will not distract from service delivery.

For many communities across Ekurhuleni, this moment feels like a turning point, either toward stronger governance and safer streets, or toward another cycle of headlines without change. The MMC’s office now carries that expectation, and the metro will be judged by what happens on the ground, not what is promised on paper.

Ramaphosa made the announcement durulng the SONA that was held at the Cape Town’s City Hall on Thursday evening.

Lesufi described the deployment as a decisive and necessary intervention to address the growing threat posed by illegal mining.

He said it undermines the rule of law, endangers communities, damages critical infrastructure and negatively affects the province’s economy.

“Illegal mining has become a serious criminal enterprise that threatens the safety of our communities, exploits vulnerable people, and causes extensive environmental damage. The deployment of soldiers to assist the police demonstrates government’s commitment to restoring law and order and protecting communities,” Lesufi said.

Lesufi noted that Gauteng has borne the brunt of illegal mining activities, including violent crime, unsafe abandoned mining shafts and the intimidation of residents in affected areas.

He expressed confidence that the joint deployment would strengthen law enforcement capacity and enhance coordinated operations against illegal mining syndicates.

“The people of Gauteng deserve to live in safe communities free from criminality. We remain committed to doing everything possible, together with national government, to eradicate illegal mining and its associated crimes,” he said.
