Young South Africans set to step into the world of coding as 5FM launches practical tech training initiative in Johannesburg

For many young South Africans, the path into the technology industry can feel distant, expensive and out of reach. On 12 June 2026, that gap will narrow as dozens of aspiring coders gather in Rosebank for a hands-on opportunity that could shape their future careers.

5FM’s Code Youth Bootcamp is heading to the WeThinkCode campus in Johannesburg, offering young people a free, full-day introduction to coding and digital literacy as part of the broadcaster’s Youth Month programme.

The initiative, delivered in partnership with WeThinkCode_, aims to give beginners a practical first step into the fast-growing digital economy, at a time when technology skills are becoming increasingly important in South Africa’s job market.

A gateway into the tech world

The bootcamp has been designed specifically for young people aged between 18 and 25, with organisers emphasising that no previous coding experience is required.

Throughout the day, participants will be introduced to core programming principles, including introductory Python coding, problem-solving methods and project-building exercises. The programme is focused on practical learning, allowing attendees to apply new skills in real-world scenarios rather than simply learning theory.

By the end of the session, participants are expected to have developed basic digital projects while gaining valuable exposure to the foundations of software development.

Beyond technical skills, the bootcamp also aims to foster creativity, analytical thinking and confidence, qualities increasingly sought after in the modern workplace.

Youth Month focus on future skills

The Code Youth Bootcamp forms part of 5FM’s broader Youth Month activations, which seek to empower young South Africans with skills that can improve their long-term employment prospects.

As industries across the country continue to undergo rapid digital transformation, demand for coding, software development and technology-related skills has surged. For many young job seekers, gaining even basic exposure to these fields can provide an important advantage.

The initiative reflects growing efforts by organisations and educational partners to make technology education more accessible, particularly for young people who may not have traditional pathways into the sector.

Rosebank event expected to attract strong interest

The Johannesburg session marks the first stop in a national series of bootcamps.

Following the Rosebank event, the programme will move to Cape Town on 19 June before concluding in Pretoria on 26 June.

With digital skills increasingly viewed as a gateway to employment and entrepreneurship, organisers expect strong interest from young people eager to explore opportunities within South Africa’s expanding technology sector.

For many attendees, the day will be more than just a coding lesson. It could be the first step towards a future in one of the world’s fastest-growing industries.
