The group says the proposals linked to the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (CRL Rights Commission) could amount to state interference in religious affairs.

They are calling on government to protect constitutional rights to freedom of religion and ensure churches remain independent from state control.

The commission, chaired by Thoko Mkhwanazi-Xaluva, says its proposals aim to improve accountability in the religious sector.
