The US has seen more than 1,100 measles cases this year already. It’s a scary number that’s got people worried about what’s coming next.

Out of every 1,000 kids who catch measles, one might get a serious brain swelling. Up to three could even die from it.

This year is shaping up to be another bad one for measles. In the first eight weeks alone, over 1,100 cases were reported – that’s six times more than what’s normal for a whole year.

It’s really disappointing because there’s a safe vaccine that works great against measles and its nasty side effects.

Measles is no joke – it can hit any healthy kid hard.

But almost all the cases so far – about 96% – are in people who aren’t fully vaccinated. Over 80% are in kids and teens, with one in four under age five.

Last year, there were nearly 2,300 cases – the most in over 30 years, way more than any year since it was thought to be gone in 2000.

Three people died last year: two kids and one adult, all unvaccinated.

That’s about the expected rate of one to three deaths per 1,000 cases. So yeah, more deaths are likely on the way.

It’s heartbreaking. When folks skip vaccines, you get more sickness, more hospital stays, and more deaths. Kids are dying from something that’s totally preventable because parents are more scared of the vaccine than the disease itself.

More than half the states have had cases this year, with at least three big outbreaks still growing.

A huge outbreak up in one area has racked up at least 985 cases since October.

It’s in a spot where not many people are vaccinated. Almost all cases over 93% are in unvaccinated folks.

No deaths yet, but there have been bad complications like lung infections and brain issues that can cause deafness or other long-term problems. Some pregnant women needed special treatment after getting exposed.

Nearly 17,000 vaccines were given out in January, even using mobile units to reach more people.

These steps are to cut down on spread and keep everyone safe, especially in busy spots like hospitals.

New cases have slowed down lately down to under two dozen last week from a peak of nearly 250 in mid-January.

This slowdown came a bit earlier than expected, thanks to quick work spotting cases, warning people, and getting folks quarantined.

Boosting vaccinations has helped too. January was one of the best months for shots in years. But there’s still more to do to get everyone covered.

The outbreak isn’t over, there are still pockets of people who aren’t protected, which could keep it going.

Staff are working hard on tracking contacts and managing data.

They’re also getting extra help to analyze everything and learn how to stop it better.

And measles is still spreading strong in other areas.

Cases have popped up in several states linked to this outbreak, like some with 23 cases since December – more than five times what they’ve seen in the last decade.

Outbreaks in other regions are ongoing too, with hundreds of cases since summer in some spots.

A newer one along the coast has exploded to at least 83 cases in the past month.

It’s centered around a college in a close community. Most cases seem to be students, but details on ages or vaccination status aren’t out there.

While kids make up most recent cases, adults can get hit just as hard or worse, especially with lung problems.

The older you are when you catch it, the tougher it can be.

Vaccine doubts have grown, putting more young kids at risk.

Measles is a tough virus.

Talk to your doctor about it the one who knows you and your family best. Have that chat and really listen.

It was thought to be eliminated back in 2000, but ongoing spread is putting that at risk. There might be a decision soon on whether that status holds.

UNICEF has reached a new agreement aimed at reducing the cost of the R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine, a move expected to make the life-saving shot more affordable for millions of children.

The new pricing arrangement, which will bring the cost down to about 3 dollars per dose, is expected to take effect within the next year. Backed by Gavi and implemented through UNICEF, the deal is projected to save more than 90 million dollars.

These savings will help fund the production of an additional 30 million vaccine doses and extend protection to an estimated 7 million more children over the next five years.

So far, more than 40 million malaria vaccine doses have been delivered through the Gavi Malaria Vaccination Programme. The vaccines are now part of routine immunisation schedules in 24 African countries, which together account for over 70 percent of the global malaria burden.

Despite progress, malaria continues to be one of the world’s most challenging health threats. In 2023 alone, there were about 263 million cases and 597,000 deaths globally. Most of these deaths—around 95 percent—occurred in Africa, especially among children under five who lack access to reliable prevention and treatment.

In many high-burden countries, malaria remains a leading cause of hospital visits, placing a heavy financial strain on families and health systems. The cost of treating a mild case in sub-Saharan Africa is estimated at 4 to 7 dollars per outpatient visit, while severe cases requiring hospital care can cost more than 70 dollars.

Efforts to cut vaccine prices are expected to ease some of these pressures and expand access to protection for communities most at risk.

Nigeria is reeling after one of the largest school abductions in the nation’s history, as more than 300 children and staff were taken by armed men from a Catholic boarding school in Niger State.

The Christian Association of Nigeria confirmed that 303 students and 12 teachers were kidnapped from St Mary’s School in Papiri. The updated numbers came after officials completed a detailed verification of those missing. The scale of the attack surpasses the 2014 Chibok school abduction, which had long stood as one of the darkest moments in the country’s history.

According to local authorities, the attackers stormed the school around 2:00am on Friday, seizing students who were sleeping on the premises. Families have been left devastated, many clinging to hope as rescue efforts continue.

Dominic Adamu, whose daughters attend the school, described the shock gripping the community. “Everybody is weak… it took everybody by surprise,” he said. Another distraught woman shared that her nieces—just six and thirteen years old—were among those taken. “I just want them to come home,” she pleaded.

Security operatives are combing nearby forests in an effort to track the kidnappers and rescue the victims. In response, all schools in Niger State have been ordered to shut down.

Authorities revealed that the school had been previously instructed to close its boarding facilities due to intelligence pointing to increased risks of attacks. They say the decision to remain open exposed both students and staff to danger, though the school has not responded to the claim.

Kidnappings for ransom by armed groups—often referred to as bandits—remain a persistent threat across several parts of Nigeria. While ransom payments have been outlawed, the measure has done little to deter the criminal networks responsible for these attacks.

This latest abduction is the third major attack on educational and religious institutions within one week. In Kebbi State, more than 20 schoolgirls were kidnapped earlier in the week. In Kwara State, a church attack left two people dead and dozens abducted.

The rising insecurity has intensified frustration among Nigerians, many of whom are demanding stronger protection for children, schools, and communities. The urgency of the situation also led President Bola Tinubu to postpone planned foreign trips so he could directly address the growing crisis.

The tragedy unfolds amid international debates about religious persecution in Nigeria. Some political figures abroad have alleged that Christians are being specifically targeted, but Nigerian authorities insist that attacks cut across religious lines. They emphasise that criminal groups and extremist militants target Muslims, Christians, and others alike—motivated by ideology, revenge, or competition over resources rather than religion alone.

Northern Nigeria continues to grapple with insurgency, banditry, and farmer–herder conflicts, each contributing to a complex and long-standing security challenge. The memory of the 2014 Chibok abduction still lingers, with around 100 girls still unaccounted for more than a decade later.

As communities wait anxiously for news, the nation hopes that the children and staff of St Mary’s School will be safely returned.

Speaking about the proposal, which calls for Arab and international partners to help train Palestinian police forces and stabilize Gaza, the King said peacekeeping is acceptable — but peace enforcement is not.

“What matters is the mission’s purpose,” he said. “If it’s truly peacekeeping, then countries can help train and support local police. But if it’s about running armed patrols in Gaza, that’s not something anyone will want to do.”

He added that Jordan and Egypt are ready to train Palestinian security personnel but ruled out sending Jordanian troops into Gaza, noting the country’s deep political and emotional ties to the Palestinian people. Over half of Jordan’s population has Palestinian roots, and the country has long hosted millions of refugees from past conflicts.

When asked whether he trusts Hamas to give up political control of Gaza, the King said he relies on assurances from mediating nations like Qatar and Egypt. “They’re optimistic,” he said. “And if we don’t find a future for both Palestinians and Israelis, we’re doomed.”

The King has been directly involved in humanitarian efforts, including flying over Gaza to drop aid and helping evacuate children wounded in the conflict. More than 250 children, many seriously injured, have been brought to Jordan for medical treatment. Thousands more are still waiting for evacuation.

Queen Rania, who is of Palestinian descent, expressed heartbreak over the prolonged suffering in Gaza. “For two years, parents have watched their children suffer — terrified, hungry, powerless — while the world stood by,” she said.

She praised the recent ceasefire agreement, noting that pressure on Israel helped make it happen. “It took real diplomatic strength to get both sides to pause. For that, we’re grateful,” she said.

Despite the devastation, the Queen said she still believes in peace. “It’s not naïve to hope,” she said. “It’s an act of courage. Choosing hope is hard — but it’s the only path that doesn’t betray our shared humanity.”

The conflict has taken a staggering toll. Tens of thousands have been killed in Gaza since the fighting began, following a deadly Hamas attack on Israel. Though ceasefire and prisoner exchanges have brought some relief, both sides remain wary, and many families are still waiting for word about missing loved ones.

For King Abdullah and Queen Rania, the message is clear: peace will only last if it’s built on justice, dignity, and humanity for all.

Health workers at Al-Awda Hospital report an alarming rise in severe malnutrition cases, now affecting children as young as two months and as old as twelve years. Dr. Rana Abu Zaatir, who heads the hospital’s nutrition department, warned that limited access to food and medical supplies is pushing Gaza toward a deeper crisis.

Only four malnutrition treatment centers remain operational in the entire region. With northern Gaza cut off from aid deliveries for weeks, hospitals are struggling to provide therapeutic food and basic care for starving patients.

“There are many children and adults dying from malnutrition and its complications,” said Dr. Zaatir. “If border crossings remain closed and food prices keep rising, we will face a real disaster. People simply don’t have enough to eat.”

The World Food Program has noted slight improvements in humanitarian access but insists that entry to northern Gaza must be restored immediately. The agency also emphasized that a lasting ceasefire is essential to deliver life-saving food to those most in need.

Experts estimate that around half a million people in Gaza City are already living in famine conditions, underscoring the urgent need for global intervention.

Kyiv woke up to devastation after one of the deadliest nights of Russian attacks in recent weeks. At least 14 people, including three children, were killed when missiles and drones slammed into residential areas across the city. Dozens more were injured.

Rescue teams worked through the rubble in the Darnytskyi district, where a block of flats collapsed in the early hours of the morning. Families were still unaccounted for as emergency crews searched for survivors.

The youngest victims were just two, 14, and 17 years old. Kyiv’s mayor has declared a day of mourning, calling the strikes a “barbaric attack.”

Residents described the terror of the night.

> “I was sleeping in bed when I heard the explosion. I could see the missiles through my window,” said Aliona, a 31-year-old who lives near one of the destroyed buildings. “I’m scared, but I don’t want to leave. This is my city. This is my home.”

The strikes also damaged offices, cultural institutions, and even parts of the EU and British Council buildings in the capital. Across other regions of Ukraine, artillery fire and drone attacks claimed more lives, including elderly residents in Kherson.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s military struck back, claiming drone attacks on Russian oil refineries in Krasnodar and Samara. Fires broke out at some facilities, while Russian authorities said they intercepted over 100 Ukrainian drones overnight.

President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned Moscow’s actions, saying Russia had once again chosen “ballistics instead of the negotiating table.” He called on international allies to impose tougher sanctions and provide stronger guarantees of security.

The attacks came just as diplomatic talks were gaining momentum. The US, European leaders, and Russia have all been pushing for renewed peace negotiations, with a planned meeting between Ukrainian and American officials set to take place in New York this week.

For Kyiv’s residents, though, the reality is stark. Days in the capital often feel almost normal, with people working, socializing, and carrying on with daily life. But nights bring fear—sirens, drones, and the thunder of missile strikes remind everyone that the war is far from over.

Among the children receiving care is 11-month-old Zenazi, who was born with a cleft palate. His grandmother, Mrs. Mafanya, shared the emotional journey leading to the surgery:

Led by a team of dedicated surgeons and supported by hospital staff, the Smile Week program is not only a medical intervention but a symbol of renewal for families who have long faced social stigma, financial challenges, and emotional stress.

Addressing the various media houses and stakeholders, Dr. Rolene Wagner, HOD- ECDOH, emphasized the power of collaboration:

“I stand here today not only to express our gratitude but also to issue an earnest call to action.
These partnerships include contributions from local and national sponsors such as Spur, Milky Lane, and Discovery, whose support has helped make this surgical week possible.

Dr. Silvia Passoni, Chief Operating Officer of the Smile Foundation, praised the courage of both children and their caregivers:

As the Smile Foundation Surgical Week continues, the initiative serves as a beacon of what can be accomplished through united efforts — where public healthcare, private sector support, and nonprofit organization come together in the mission to transform lives.

> “He has been arrested and is currently being held at Sophiatown Police Station,” Fihla said. “He faces charges of reckless and negligent driving, as well as driving under the influence.”

The condition of the injured pupils has not yet been disclosed, and authorities are still assessing the full extent of the injuries.

This incident follows a troubling trend in South Africa’s scholar transport system, where reckless driving, poor vehicle conditions, and disregard for safety measures continue to endanger young lives.

Just days earlier in KwaZulu-Natal, another scholar transport accident involving a suspected drunk driver resulted in the death of one learner and injuries to ten others.

These accidents come amid growing concern about road safety in South Africa. The country was recently ranked as the most dangerous place in the world to drive, with high rates of drunk driving, speeding, and failure to use seatbelts.

Parents and community members have once again called for stricter regulation of scholar transport operators and tougher penalties for those who put children’s lives at risk.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is deepening, with almost one in three people reportedly enduring days without eating. Malnutrition is spreading rapidly, and tens of thousands of women and children are in urgent need of medical treatment.

The number of deaths from malnutrition continues to rise, highlighting the severity of the situation. While authorities controlling access to Gaza insist there are no restrictions on aid, the growing hunger suggests otherwise.

In response to the worsening crisis, the UK has expressed interest in supporting airdrops of aid into Gaza. The government has faced increased pressure to take more decisive action, including from lawmakers calling for recognition of a Palestinian state. Aid airdrops, although considered a last resort by experts due to their inefficiency, are now being explored as a way to reach desperate civilians.

Efforts are also underway to evacuate children needing critical medical care. While some nations have announced plans to assist with aid drops, permissions and logistical challenges remain.

The deteriorating conditions have prompted strong international reactions. Several countries have called for the immediate lifting of restrictions on humanitarian aid and for an end to the ongoing conflict. These calls emphasize the need for all parties to respect international humanitarian obligations and ensure civilians are protected.

Global leaders have voiced frustration over what they see as widespread indifference and lack of meaningful action. Reports from the ground indicate a tragic pattern: civilians are being killed while attempting to collect food, and the civilian infrastructure has been devastated.

Eyewitnesses, including former contractors working in aid delivery, have described scenes of extreme violence, claiming that civilians have come under fire at food distribution sites. These accounts paint a grim picture of what many are calling indiscriminate use of force.

Negotiations for a ceasefire and the release of hostages appear to have stalled. Statements from involved parties suggest uncertainty and miscommunication, with some claiming talks are ongoing while others have withdrawn their negotiating teams.

The conflict began after a deadly attack that killed over a thousand people and led to the capture of hundreds of hostages. In response, a full-scale military offensive was launched, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths and widespread displacement.

A total blockade of aid deliveries earlier in the year led to warnings of famine from global experts. Although access has since been partially restored, the shortage of food, medicine, and fuel persists. Most of Gaza’s population has been displaced multiple times, and the vast majority of homes have been damaged or destroyed.

In a significant political development, one European country recently announced plans to formally recognize a Palestinian state later this year. This decision has intensified diplomatic tensions and added new urgency to international discussions about a two-state solution. In the UK, political leaders are facing similar pressure but have indicated that any recognition would need to be part of a broader peace strategy.

The human toll of the conflict continues to rise, with heartbreaking stories emerging from the ground: mothers caring for severely malnourished children, families mourning loved ones lost while searching for food, and communities struggling to survive amid destruction and despair.

Children in Gaza are facing severe hunger, with one in five now malnourished. Conditions are worsening each day as families struggle to find food.

“People here are neither dead nor alive, they’re like walking corpses,” said one aid worker. Many international organisations have warned that mass starvation is looming unless immediate action is taken.

While Israel maintains there is no blockade and blames Hamas for the crisis, aid groups report that only minimal supplies are getting through. Over a hundred people, most of them children, have already died from hunger.

Many parents are desperate. Some children rummage through garbage for food scraps, while families sell their gold and personal belongings just to buy flour, which has become scarce and unaffordable.

One mother shared how her eight-month-old baby has never tasted fresh fruit. Another pregnant woman said she hopes her baby stays in her womb longer to avoid giving birth in such harsh conditions.

Attempts to collect food aid are dangerous. Hundreds of people have been killed while trying to reach distribution centres or convoys. Many fear they will be shot if they leave their shelters to look for food.

“We go to bed hungry every night,” said a father. “We are not alive. We are dead inside.”

Another woman described how her husband was shot while trying to collect aid. “If we are to die from hunger, so be it,” she said. “The path to aid is the path to death.”

Families in Gaza say they feel abandoned and are pleading with the world to intervene before it is too late.
