Brown Mogotsi Fails to Appear at Madlanga Commission Citing Illness

Political fixer and businessman Brown Mogotsi was expected to return to the Madlanga Commission today but failed to appear, citing illness.

Evidence leader Matthew Charleston told the Commission that Mogotsi had informed them he was unwell and would submit a medical certificate later today as proof of his condition.

Charleston emphasised that Mogotsi has previously honoured his commitments to appear and cooperate with the inquiry. He urged the Commission not to make any final determination regarding his absence until the promised medical certificate has been received and assessed.

Mogotsi has already testified extensively before the Commission and has also appeared in Parliament. However, several key issues remain outstanding and have not yet been fully canvassed in either forum.

It was further placed on record that although Mogotsi previously had legal representation, he is no longer represented and is expected to appear in person when he returns.

The Commission initially considered declaring him in contempt and initiating legal processes immediately. That course of action has now been placed on hold pending submission of the medical certificate.

Proceedings have been stood down until Wednesday, when the Commission is expected to decide how to proceed in light of his absence.

The Commission also indicated that it is considering summoning medical practitioners who allegedly issued doctors’ notes to witnesses who failed to appear, as part of tightening oversight around non attendance.

North West Businessman and Political Fixer Brown Mogotsi Revealed More Damning Allegations During His Testimony At The Ad Hoc Committee

North West businessman Brown Mogotsi has levelled explosive claims against KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, accusing him of failing to disclose a private meeting with alleged underworld figure Vusimusi Matlala, widely known as “Cat” Matlala.

Mogotsi made these allegations during his appearance at the Adhoc Committee which is investigating infiltration of SAPS , fraud and corruption.

This was the second time Mokgotsi made these allegations which he initially made during his testimony before the Madlanga Commission.

According to Mogotsi, the controversy dates back to a media briefing last July, where Mkhwanazi accused him of acting as a go-between for senior politicians and Matlala to derail police investigations.

It further emerged that Mokgotsi had ose ties with the suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and had participated in helping the CR17 campaign that saw President Cyril Ramaphosa emerging as the winner in that ANC elective conference.

As if that was not enough, the Ad Hoc Committee further heard of how a murder case against Mokgotsi was dropped without any reasons and how former Police Ministet Bheki Cele lied about knowing Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala way before 2024.

Brown Mogotsi told the Ad Hoc Committee he doesn’t believe Cele didn’t know Cat Matlala until 2024, saying the 2018 Crime Intelligence report with a “Big” picture of Matlala clearly labeled him as “John Wick” linked to Boko Haram in Mamelodi

Mogotsi told the Ad Hoc Committee today that Cele should have recognized businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala years earlier, based on a 2018 Crime Intelligence report labeling Matlala as “John Wick” linked to the Boko Haram gang in Mamelodi.

Mogotsi said the report, housed in the Crime Intelligence Analysis department, included a large photograph of Matlala, his identification details, and criminal history.

“At that time, it was perceived or construed as I said Cat Matlala was John Wick, or is John Wick. I saw the report in 2018 and it is still there,” he told the commission.

He added that the report should have been visible to Cele during his tenure.

“When Bheki Cele said he only met Cat once or twice, my contention was he should have seen Cat Matlala from that report. The picture was so big, and it was part of a presentation. That report exists in the Crime Intelligence Analysis,” Mogotsi said.

Cele has testified that he first met Matlala in December 2024 and denied receiving payments or having a close friendship. Matlala, in previous testimony, alleged paying Cele R500,000 in cash as a facilitation fee related to seized firearms.

Cele rejected these claims, maintaining his contact was limited.

Mogotsi’s testimony today adds to a series of conflicting accounts regarding Cele’s knowledge of Matlala, the “John Wick” vigilante moniker, and potential financial dealings.

Mogotsi further claimed Matlala personally told him from prison that he had travelled to uMhlanga in Dbn to meet Mkhwanazi and had given him “something,” which Mogotsi interpreted as money.

“I followed Matlala to Durban at the time, believing the “important person” he was meeting could have been former police minister Bheki Cele. Only later, I did learn the meeting was allegedly with Mkhwanazi,” he said.

ANC Chief Whip Mdumiseni Ntuli has defended the National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza who is facing harsh criticism over refusal to subpoena Paul O’Sullivan and Brown Mogotsi.

Ntuli called the latest criticism labeling it as unfair attacks and unjustified and misdirected.

In a virtual interview on SABC News, ANC Chief Whip Mdumiseni Ntuli defended National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza against criticism for declining to issue subpoenas for forensic investigator Paul O’Sullivan and businessman Brown Mogotsi to appear before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee.

Ntuli described the attacks on Didiza as unjustified and misdirected, insisting she is ensuring proper procedure is followed.

Ntuli, a member of the committee probing misconduct and infiltration in the criminal justice system, said Didiza wants decisions safeguarded from court challenges.

He explained that the committee must address security concerns raised by O’Sullivan (currently in the UK with death threats) and Mogotsi (demanding funded protection) before forcing in-person appearances.

O’Sullivan left the country with his seven kids.

He rejected claims of undue delay, noting correspondence with the Speaker began late last year, with responses from O’Sullivan in December and January.

Ntuli stressed unanimity on holding O’Sullivan accountable for alleged contempt toward Parliament, while warning that bypassing process could embarrass the committee legally.

The ANC maintains Didiza’s guidance protects the inquiry’s integrity.

The committee continues its work toward the mid-February deadline, with Ntuli calling for responsibility rather than shifting blame to the Speaker.

MK Party MP Sibonelo Nomvalo Warns Witnesses Might Start Asking for Valentine’s Gifts, Eggs, and Bacon

Sibonelo Nomvalo, a Member of Parliament from the uMkhonto weSizwe Party, is pushing back against witnesses who can’t show up in person for a special parliamentary committee looking into claims of misconduct and interference in the justice system. He says they need solid proof to back up their excuses.

This comes after the committee tried to get subpoenas for forensic investigator Paul O’Sullivan and North West businessman Brown Mogotsi to testify in Cape Town. The National Assembly Speaker wasn’t keen on issuing them.

Nomvalo told reporters that some of these requests from witnesses are getting out of hand. For example, he pointed out that Mogotsi should provide a police report proving there’s a real security threat against him. “You can’t just act like a spoiled kid,” Nomvalo said. “Next thing you know, they’ll be demanding pizza, bacon, eggs, or even gifts for their girlfriends on Valentine’s Day.”

He stressed that there needs to be official confirmation from trained police about any dangers. Nomvalo also criticized the Speaker for not helping the committee use its powers under the Constitution, which allows Parliament to summon anyone for evidence.

Recently, O’Sullivan pushed back against Nomvalo and the MK Party after the MP said he should come back to South Africa to testify in person. O’Sullivan had offered to do it virtually from London and denied fleeing to avoid the committee.

Nomvalo called O’Sullivan’s attitude disrespectful. “He’s been threatening MPs and witnesses, showing no respect for Parliament,” he said. “We decided to subpoena him because he acts like he’s above it all, like a spoiled brat. He doesn’t get that things are different now with the MK Party involved, he’s not dealing with his old buddies he used to control.”

The committee is chaired by Molapi Soviet Lekganyane and is focused on these serious allegations.

Nkabinde Admits Guessing Meeting Dates, Sparking Perjury Concerns in Parliament

Chief of Staff Cedric Nkabinde found himself under heavy scrutiny in Parliament after admitting that key dates in his sworn affidavit were “thumb-sucked” because his electronic devices had been confiscated. His admission immediately raised doubts about the credibility of his testimony regarding meetings between Minister Senzo Mchunu and businessman Brown Mogotsi.

Speaking before the ad hoc committee, Nkabinde explained that he had relied on estimation when drafting his affidavit because he had no access to his phone or laptop. He said he had informed evidence leaders that he could not be precise, and they advised him to provide approximate dates.

The core of the confusion revolved around whether the first meeting between Mchunu and Mogotsi happened in September or sometime between October and November 2024. Initially, Nkabinde suggested that he only received Mogotsi’s contact information later in the year. But committee members pointed out contradictions in his affidavit, which stated that Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi phoned him as early as September 2024 about Mogotsi.

MPs pressed him on these inconsistencies. MK Party MP Sibonelo Nomvalo highlighted that Nkabinde’s earlier statement directly conflicted with what he was now saying. Faced with this, Nkabinde admitted his affidavit may contain incorrect dates and apologized, insisting the errors stemmed from lack of access to his devices.

He added that the meeting between Mchunu and Mogotsi likely took place before a September 30 trip to Lusikisiki, but several MPs were visibly frustrated by the shifting timeline. EFF leader Julius Malema accused him of misleading Parliament, warning that changing sworn information could amount to lying under oath. Malema urged him to withdraw the affidavit and write a new one.

ANC MP Mdumiseni Ntuli questioned why Nkabinde had specified October and November if he was uncertain. Nkabinde repeated that he had been guided to estimate. MPs argued that this kind of vague recollection weakened the entire purpose of the inquiry.

ActionSA MP Dereleen James expressed frustration, asking how the committee could continue with testimony built on “thumb-sucked dates.” EFF MP Leigh-Ann Mathys went further, warning that the contradictions were not just errors—they could constitute perjury.

Nkabinde maintained that he was transparent about his uncertainty from the beginning and blamed the lack of access to his confiscated gadgets for the inaccuracies. Despite his explanation and apology, several MPs insisted that the contradictions had undermined both his credibility and the integrity of the committee’s work.

The EFF has since opened a perjury case against Nkabinde at the Cape Town police station.
