On Monday morning, a head-on collision between an Albany truck and a motor vehicle left one person dead and several others injured.

The crash happened in the early hours, forcing the closure of the Golden Highway (R553) as emergency services and SAPS forensic teams rushed to the scene.

According to initial reports, the motor vehicle veered into oncoming traffic, leading to the devastating impact.

What Happened

Witnesses told police that the driver of the motor vehicle was travelling in the wrong lane when the truck approached.

Despite efforts by the truck driver to avoid the collision, it was too late.

Both vehicles crashed and rolled on impact.

Speaking to MDN News, Vanderbijlpark SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Sincu confirmed the details.

“The motor vehicle from Sebokeng, driven by an African male, was travelling towards Bophelong and moved into the oncoming lane. The truck tried to avoid the collision, but unfortunately both vehicles crashed and rolled,” he said.

Casualties and Injuries. The driver of the motor vehicle died at the scene.

The truck driver sustained critical injuries and was rushed to hospital.

Two additional passengers in the truck suffered minor injuries.

Police have opened a case of culpable homicide and investigations are ongoing.

Authorities are also working to locate the family of the deceased.

This latest crash comes just months after a devastating accident on 19 January 2026, when 14 learners lost their lives in a collision involving a truck and a minibus taxi on the same route.

The repeated loss of life on the R553 has raised serious concerns about road safety and driver behaviour along this busy stretch.

The incident happened around 7:40 p.m. local time when a train traveling from Málaga to Madrid (operated by private company Iryo, carrying about 300 passengers) derailed on a straight section of track. Part of it crossed over to the opposite line and slammed head-on into an oncoming train heading from Madrid to Huelva (operated by Renfe, with around 100-200 passengers).

The impact was so forceful that some carriages were pushed off the tracks and down an embankment, making rescue work extremely difficult. Emergency teams had to carefully navigate the mangled metal to reach trapped survivors  in some heartbreaking cases, they had to move deceased passengers to access those still alive.

Passengers described the moment as feeling like an “earthquake,” with screams, chaos, and people using phone flashlights in the dark to find their way. Many of the most seriously injured — including at least 24 in grave condition — were in the front carriages of the second train.

Spain’s Transport Minister Óscar Puente called the crash “extremely strange” and “baffling,” noting that the track was recently renovated and the derailment occurred on a straight stretch. An investigation is underway, but it could take weeks or months to determine the exact cause.

Spain’s high-speed network is one of the world’s largest and generally very safe, but this is the country’s worst rail disaster in over a decade, since the 2013 Galicia crash that killed 80.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described it as a “night of deep pain” for the nation, while King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia expressed their condolences. Leaders from France, Italy, and the EU have also offered support.

All services on the Madrid-Andalusia high-speed line remain suspended, with major disruptions expected.

At the time of the fire, 81 individuals were in the emergency unit. Among them, two were moved to the ICU, one to high care, and four were discharged. Seventeen patients were transferred to other hospitals, including Charlotte Maxeke, Edenvale, Steve Biko, and Tshwane District. Fifty were accommodated in the hospital’s antenatal unit, while seven left the hospital on their own upon seeing the fire.

The emergency unit had recently undergone renovations and reportedly met all required health and safety standards. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire.

Motorists have been advised to seek alternative routes, as that section of the N4 remains closed. It is unclear when the road will reopen.

Authorities have warned road users to be cautious, as traffic volumes are expected to surge across South Africa’s major routes during the Easter period. Historically, the long weekend has been one of the most dangerous times on the roads, with thousands traveling to holiday destinations in a short span of time.

The N3 from Johannesburg to Durban, and the N1 from Johannesburg to Polokwane are expected to be among the busiest routes, alongside the N4 in Mpumalanga. Drivers are urged to be patient and vigilant, especially during peak hours and in high-risk zones.
