This renewed partnership was highlighted during the visit of Lieutenant General Wiseman Simo Mbambo, Chief of the South African Air Force, to the NAF Headquarters in Abuja on Monday.

During the meeting, both air forces discussed key areas of collaboration, including joint training, logistics, aircraft maintenance, counter-terrorism, and technological innovation. The engagement underscored the two nations’ shared goal of building stronger regional security through air power diplomacy and operational cooperation.

Lieutenant General Mbambo praised the Nigerian Air Force for modernising its fleet, improving maintenance capacity, and advancing indigenous technological development. He reaffirmed South Africa’s readiness to partner with Nigeria on training initiatives, technical exchanges, and efforts to counter emerging threats.

He also highlighted the growing challenge of non-state actors gaining access to advanced military technologies and called for greater solidarity among African air forces to protect the continent’s collective security interests.

Representing the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal I.H. Etukudo described the visit as a milestone in fostering intra-African defence collaboration. He reaffirmed the NAF’s dedication to forming strategic partnerships focused on innovation, capacity building, and operational excellence.

The visit strengthened bilateral ties between Nigeria and South Africa, marking a significant step toward a safer, more united Africa through cooperation in air power and counter-terrorism initiatives.

Supporters gathered outside the courthouse demanding his release, with activist Omoyele Sowore leading the demonstration. Security forces responded by firing tear gas and sealing off major roads, causing widespread traffic disruptions. Witnesses reported several arrests, including members of Kanu’s legal team and relatives, although police have not released an official statement.

Detained since 2021, Kanu remains one of Nigeria’s most divisive figures—seen by many in the southeast as a symbol of resistance, while authorities view him as a threat to national unity. His prolonged legal battle continues to deepen political and ethnic tensions across the country.

According to witnesses, the incident occurred when armed robbers invaded her building in Katampe, overpowering security guards and moving from one apartment to another, stealing valuables such as cars, laptops, and phones. In a desperate attempt to escape, Maduagwu reportedly jumped from her third-floor balcony and sustained fatal injuries.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan expressed deep sorrow over her passing, describing her as a brilliant journalist who died at the height of her career. He called on the authorities to ensure that those responsible are swiftly brought to justice.

Somtochukwu Maduagwu’s death has sparked nationwide grief, with colleagues, friends, and fans remembering her as a passionate professional who brought warmth and credibility to the screen. Her untimely death serves as a painful reminder of the growing insecurity faced by residents in Nigeria’s capital.
