The woman was abducted on August 11 when armed suspects blocked her car in Crocus Street. They forced her into their vehicle and fled the scene, later demanding a ransom from her family.

A multi-disciplinary police team launched an urgent investigation, which led to the woman’s safe return five days later. She was found near the Kariega police station, unharmed and reunited with her family.

An intelligence-led operation then tracked the suspects to Gqeberha, where two men aged 29 and 31 were arrested. Police also seized two vehicles, two firearms, and a large amount of cash believed to be linked to the kidnapping.

The suspects are expected to appear separately in the Kariega Magistrate’s Court this week.

The Hawks commended the investigation team for their swift action, saying the arrests send a strong message that crimes of this nature will not go unpunished.

Baby Mogamat Imaad Shamar was last seen on Saturday, June 28, wrapped in a blue blanket and dressed in a white vest and white crawler with car prints. His sudden disappearance has left his family desperate for answers and praying for his safe return.

According to the mother, a woman known only as “Chivon” befriended her during her pregnancy, claiming to represent an organisation that supports young mothers with counselling and care packages. After the baby was born, the woman invited the new mother for a meal. During their outing, the mother briefly went to the bathroom due to feeling unwell. When she returned, both the woman and her baby were gone.

Flyers with Baby Shamar’s photo have since flooded social media in the hopes that someone has seen him.

In a separate, heartbreaking incident in the Eastern Cape, a four-week-old baby boy was found abandoned on Saturday. The child, discovered alive, was taken to hospital for medical evaluation. Police are now searching for the child’s mother as they investigate the case as child neglect.

Both families are facing unimaginable pain, and the public is urged to share any information that may assist in finding the missing baby or helping the ongoing investigations.

Kamogelo was abducted on Thursday, 5 June 2025, while driven home from school in Verneeniging Drive, Bloemfontein. His disappearance triggered widespread concern and led to the establishment of a dedicated multidisciplinary task team under the leadership of the Mangaung Metro District Commissioner, Major General Arthur Peter Adams.

After weeks of intensive investigation, Kamogelo was safely located and rescued in Wepener in the early hours of this morning, 27 June 2025. During this intelligence driven operation, five African males aged between 20 and 29 were arrested. Three suspects were apprehended at a house in Kanana Location, Wepener, while two others were caught on the road between Kwetla Location and Wepener town — with the victim in their possession.

This brings the total number of arrests in the case to six.

The first suspect, a 42-year-old police sergeant, who was previously arrested, appeared in court charged with kidnapping and extortion.

Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, Provincial Commissioner of the Free State, commended the hard work of this team:

The safe recovery of young Kamogelo is a moment of great relief for the family, the community, and all of us. I commend our members for their unwavering efforts, who worked tirelessly following up every lead under serious public scrutiny. We will ensure that justice is served.”

The suspects face charges related to kidnapping, extortion. They will join the police sergeant in court on Monday 30 June 2025. The investigation continues.
