The African National Congress (ANC) welcomes and fully embraces the historic ruling by the Pietermaritzburg High Court, which has finally established that our former President-General, Isithwalandwe-Seaparankoe Chief Albert John Mvumbi Luthuli, was brutally beaten to death by the apartheid police in 1967.

This judgment corrects a long-standing distortion of history; overturning the apartheid-era inquest that falsely claimed Chief Luthuli died after being struck by a goods train. The Court, presided over by Judge Nompumelelo Hadebe, affirmed that both oral and documentary evidence presented in the reopened inquest do not support those discredited findings. This ruling brings justice, truth, and dignity to the memory of one of South Africa’s greatest sons and to all those who suffered under apartheid brutality.

Honouring Chief Albert Luthuli

Chief Albert Luthuli, a teacher, traditional leader, and freedom fighter, served as President-General of the ANC from 1952 until his passing in 1967. He led the movement during one of its most difficult and defining periods — the era of the Defiance Campaign, the drafting of the Freedom Charter, and the banning of the ANC.

As a man of peace, courage, and moral conviction, Chief Luthuli became the first African recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1960 for his non-violent resistance against apartheid.

—

Luthuli’s Legacy and the ANC’s Commitment

Under his leadership, the ANC deepened its commitment to unity, democracy, and the vision of a non-racial, non-sexist South Africa. He stood firmly for the principle that “the road to freedom is via the cross”, reminding generations of activists that the struggle for liberation demands sacrifice and integrity.

This judgment reaffirms what the ANC, the liberation movement, and the oppressed people of South Africa have always known: that Chief Luthuli was a victim of state-sanctioned murder. It is a moral victory not only for his family but for all martyrs of our struggle whose lives were cut short by the cruelty of apartheid.

The ANC commends the efforts of all those who fought tirelessly to reopen this inquest — historians, human rights lawyers, the Luthuli family, and the Department of Justice — for their pursuit of truth and accountability. This ruling restores historical integrity and strengthens our nation’s collective memory.

Recommitment to Luthuli’s Vision

As the movement that Chief Luthuli once led, the ANC recommits itself to defending the values he lived and died for — freedom, equality, peace, and justice. His spirit continues to guide our journey of national renewal and social transformation.

The ANC calls on all South Africans to reflect on this moment as a reminder of the sacrifices made for our democracy, and to rededicate ourselves to the ongoing task of building a just, united, and prosperous South Africa.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, Oct. 30, 2025 — Walmart is pleased to announce that the first Walmart Store in South Africa will be launched in Clearwater Mall, located on the West Rand in Johannesburg.

Every Day Low Prices

The new store brings a world-class shopping experience, supported by Walmart’s Every Day Low Prices philosophy, to residents of Johannesburg’s western suburbs. With Every Day Low Prices, Walmart customers can shop on their own schedule and trust that they will always get a low price on the products they’re looking for and at the quality they’d expect — without having to wait for short-term promotions or worrying about constantly fluctuating prices. The objective is to ensure that whenever customers do their weekly shopping with Walmart, they always save money.

> “We’re thrilled to bring customers on the West Rand Walmart’s promise of Every Day Low Prices — together with a world-class assortment and shopping experience, both in-store and online. It’s an experience that blends the best of global retail with a proudly local touch. Since announcing the arrival of the first Walmart-branded stores in South Africa, the excitement has been incredible, and our team is proud to deliver this new and meaningful chapter in South African retail,” says Miles van Rensburg, Massmart President and CEO.

Layout and Assortment

The store incorporates a customer-centric design characterized by bright lighting, spacious aisles, intuitive inter-department flow, and efficient checkout — supported by friendly, helpful service.

The product offering comprises:

Fresh and frozen food

Groceries and consumables

Thoughtfully curated health and beauty

Apparel and baby

Sports and outdoor

Homeware

Electronics

Toys and seasonal departments

—

Local & Global Products

Reflecting Walmart’s commitment to local community investment, the store’s product offering is largely sourced from local suppliers, complemented by a curated selection of global brands. Among these is Drew Barrymore’s Beautiful range of small appliances — which adds an inspiring touch to customers’ regular weekly shopping trips.

The range includes an elegant assortment of air fryers, kettles, blenders, toasters, and stand mixers, and is celebrated for its premium quality, elegant design, and soft pastel tones.

Expanding on the role of global brands in the product assortment, Merchandise Vice President Mark Scott explains:

> “A key objective has been to broaden product choices in a way that creates a sense of discovery — where shoppers are pleasantly surprised by options that bring interest and excitement to their everyday shopping experience. While Drew Barrymore’s Beautiful range delivers this in spectacular fashion, we also see it in simple moments — for example, our sweets and confectionery aisle features international favourites such as Mike & Ike, Reese’s, Warheads, and Nerds — brands not commonly found in South Africa.”

—

First Walmart Store Manager in SA

The Walmart Clearwater store will employ more than 80 associates. Leading this team will be Store Manager Onicca Mothapo, a seasoned retail professional with 20 years of experience. Renowned within the organisation for her operational excellence and people-first leadership, Mothapo is an exceptional leader, and Walmart looks forward to her impactful contribution.

Commenting on her appointment, Mothapo says:

> “Opening this store is deeply personal. From where I began my career as a store cashier, I could never have imagined that I would one day grow to become store manager for the first Walmart store in Africa. I’m looking forward to opening the doors to a customer-focused store that offers exceptional service, Walmart’s Every Day Low Prices, and that cares deeply about our local community. I’m particularly proud of our partnership with Africa Food for Thought. Through this initiative, our store will be supporting eight early childhood development centres in the broader community, starting with donations of appliances, catering equipment, and multi-purpose furniture.”

Store Location

The Walmart Clearwater Store is located in Clearwater Mall, Hendrik Potgieter Rd, Christiaan de Wet Rd, Strubens Valley, Roodepoort.

Look out for more information about the store opening date, which will be released in the next few weeks.
