Media Statement MTHATHA – Members attached to Tactical Response Team (TRT) at Joe Gqabi and OR Tambo Districts have operationalized information about unlicensed firearms and ammunition. They were hot on the heels of the suspects who were in possession of unlicensed firearms in Caba Location outside Qumbu on Wednesday, 04 December 2024. Members swiftly responded to information received and proceeded to a house at Sbomvaneni Location under the Caba Administrative area where they met with the person of interest. Upon questioning him, he showed them the place where he kept the firearms. Police searched and recovered two unlicensed firearms, namely a shotgun and a pistol with ammunition. The serial number of a pistol was filed off while the shotgun was not reported stolen. On investigation, the shotgun does not belong to the suspect. A 51-year-old male was arrested and charged for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition and possession of prohibited unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Police investigation is currently underway, and these firearms will be taken for ballistic tests to check if they can’t be linked to other crimes. He is due to appear before the Qumbu Magistrate court on Friday, 06 December 2024. The Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene has expressed her gratitude to the TRT members on working tirelessly in ensuring a free crime zone. “By confiscating unlicensed firearms and ammunition, a soul has been saved, I encourage you to do more and guarantee our communities a safe and secure environment,” Lt Gen Mene concluded.
