Media Statement EASTERN CAPE – Two police murder suspects aged 17 and 18 were apprehended by the Gqeberha Serious Organised Crime Investigation of the Hawks for allegations of police murder and robbery of state firearm on 4 January 2025. The police Constable Callan Andrews (29) attached at Gelvandale Police station was brutally murdered whilst on duty on 31 December 2024 by the alleged suspects. During the time of an incident, the officer was at Voisen road Katanga, Gelvandale in Gqeberha, attending to a complaint where an unknown suspects reportedly grabbed his service pistol and fatally wounded him. The police official was rushed to the nearest hospital where he was declared deceased as he succumbed to a bullet wound. Through intelligence investigation by the Hawks led to the arrest of the suspects at Gqeberha, and they are due to appear before Gelvandale Magistrate’s court on 6 January 2025. More arrests are imminent as the matter is still under investigation and further details on the matter will not be divulged at the moment.
The Acting Provincial Head of the Hawks Brigadier Fernando Luis has congratulated the determined and dedicated team of investigators. He further expressed his gratitude for the contribution made by the team in swiftly apprehending the suspects. Brigadier Luis was also impressed by the collaboration between the police and the community for their willingness to assist the investigation. This will make the police and community reach an impressive milestone in fighting against criminal activities within different precinct.
