Media Statement WESTERN CAPE – In order to win the war against crime, there must be collaboration between the police and the community, especially where the community come forward and take back their areas while they work in close relationship with the South African Police Service. This collaboration resulted in the arrest of two males and one female on charges of dealing in drugs and the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition in isolated incidents. Mitchells Plain police pursued information of drugs being stored at a known gang stronghold in Tafelsig on Monday 01 July 2024. The members operationalised the information at their disposal and pounced on an address in Fountain Street where they searched the premises and confiscated 850 mandrax tablets, 800 straws filled with heroin, 65 ecstasy tablets and cash. They detained a 41-year-old man on a charge of dealing in drugs. Meanwhile Belhar police members were busy with crime combatting activities when they responded to information of a shooting incident on Tuesday 02 July 2024. The members proceeded to the mentioned location and found a male in Leerdam Street who fitted the description. They searched the man and confiscated a 9mm pistol with ammunition found in his possession. This discovery resulted in the arrest of the 27-year-old man on a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. In an unrelated incident Mitchells Plain police conducted stop and search operations in Tafelsig on Tuesday, 02 July 2024 when they were alerted about a firearm being kept inside a wendy-house. The members proceeded to an address in Bainskloof Street where they found an unknown woman standing at the gate who fled when she saw the patrol vehicle. The police members gave chase on foot and followed her to the wendy-house where they continued with a search and confiscated a .38 Taurus Revolver with ammunition. The 42-year-old suspect could not provide a valid license to be in possession of the mentioned firearm that led to her arrest on a charge of the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Once charged the suspects are expected to make their respective court appearances in the Mitchells Plain and Bellville Magistrates’ courts on the mentioned charges.
