Media Statement EASTERN CAPE – The swift and a tactical response by police officers resulted in the death of a murder suspect, following a shootout with the police in Ngqeleni this afternoon. On Wednesday, 9 October at about 12:15, one of the suspects, who is believed was involved in the murder of a policeman in Ngqeleni last week, was fatally wounded after he allegedly opened fire to the police. It is alleged that members were acting on information about one of the suspects, who was said to be hiding inside a homestead in Mqangqweni location, Ngqeleni. On police arrival at the scene, it is said that they were met by a hail of bullets, and they tactically responded resulting to the death of the suspect. The deceased man is believed to be in his early thirties. It is further said that one of the items seized from the scene was the stolen firearm (from the deceased policeman).
An inquest docket was opened, and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate was also summoned to the scene for further investigation.
