Media Statement WESTERN CAPE – Concerted efforts to keep our communities safe and bring perpetrators of the law to book yielded success when police members arrested a 33-year-old man for the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition and discharging of a firearm in a municipal area. On Wednesday evening, 20 November 2024, members of Public Order Police were conducting foot patrols in the Europe informal settlement, Philippi East, when they heard gunshots going off in the nearby vicinity. As they followed the sound of the gunshots they caught the suspect red-handed, firing shots into the air. When the male noticed the police members he started running. The members caught up with the suspect and apprehended him. The members confiscated a 9mm pistol with ammunition found in his possession. The suspect will appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court once he has been charged on the mentioned charges. Ends
