Media Statement FREE STATE – A 35-year-old male suspect was arrested on Saturday, 23 November 2024 in Bloemfontein at the Tourist Center for possession of abalone. It is alleged that a bus security official received information about a passenger who was in possession of abalone. The passenger was traveling from Eastern Cape to Gauteng. The security official searched the bus and found the suspect in possession of a box containing abalone. Members of the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team in Bloemfontein were activated and attended the crime scene. The suspect was arrested after he could not give an explanation about the box containing abalone. The box with 179 abalone with an estimated value of R26 500-00 was seized by the police. The suspect is expected to appear before the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court on Monday, 25 November 2024. Ends
