Media Statement GQEBERHA – Swift response by police in Gqeberha resulted to an arrest of one suspect while the other one was fatally shot after the suspects went on a crime spree within the area of KwaZakele. The information on the scene indicates that they were allegedly committing robberies and hijacking at KwaZakhele on Wednesday, 20 November 2024. It is alleged that at approximately 15:55, three armed suspects entered at the clinic in Nkewana Street, KwaZakele and forced the guard into the office and threatened the staff. The suspects robbed them of their belongings including cellphones and also took one of the staff member’s vehicle a Renault Tiber and fled from the scene. Soon after they were involved in two incidents where they hijacked other vehicles in KwaZakhele. The suspects then left behind two vehicles that they hijacked (Renault and VW Tiguan) and drove off with a Toyota Hilux that they also hijacked in KwaZakhele. Gqeberha Flying Squad members received information to be on the lookout for the hijacked Toyota Hilux. The members were in the area busy searching for the vehicle and at Booi Street, KwaZakhele they noticed the vehicle. Members immediately acted and at the corner of Booi Street and Spondo Road the suspects jumped from the vehicle. The driver was arrested soon after he jumped out of the vehicle and the other two suspects fled in different directions. Other suspect had a firearm in his hand and as he was running away to avoid being arrested, he pointed the members with a firearm who then retaliated and fatally shot him. The third suspect managed to run into the yard of Dora Nginza hospital and managed to get away and is still at large. All the vehicles and belongings were recovered, members also confiscated a Black and Silver Taurus 9mm short pistol, cellphones belonging to the victims and the keys of the hijacked VW Tiguan. The suspect (40) was arrested and charged on the following cases: Business robbery; Two cases of hijacking; Pointing of firearm; Possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Ends
