Media Statement NELSPRUIT – The suspect, by the name of Humpry Matekoa (34) has been remanded in custody after appearing at Kwamhlanga Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 06 December 2024. The suspect has been arrested by the Police in connection with the murder of his female companion, Ms Bontle Lorraine Modikoe (31) that took place in the evening of Wednesday, 04 December 2024 at Tweefontein M (in a place called Thokoza). According to information, the Police in Tweefontein received a complaint at a certain house and upon arrival at the scene, they found the lifeless body of the female person as well as the suspect and his father. The woman was unfortunately certified dead by the medical personnel that also attended the scene. When members sourced information through investigation as to the circumstances that led to the woman’s death, they got details that alleged that the suspect strangled her to death. Although the matter is still under investigation, the fingers point to domestic related conflicts that seems to have caused tension, resulting in the gruesome murder of the female victim. The incident took place on that fateful day around 22h00 The suspect is expected to appear again at Kwamhlanga Magistrate’s Court on 17 December 2024. The motive for the killing forms part of Police’s ongoing investigation.
Meanwhile the Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi has condemned this incident in the strongest possible terms, more so that it occurred during the 16 days campaign. “We consider this incident as a total disrespect and disregard to the efforts that the state, together with civil society are trying to make in fighting Gender-Based-Violence. The law should definitely deal decisively with such people who perpetrate violence against women and children,” said the General.
