Sundowns steal AmaZulu prospect on deadline day — and beat Pirates to him
Mamelodi Sundowns have done it again. The Brazilians have officially signed 22-year-old defender Wandile Dube from AmaZulu.
They confirmed the deal with a slick welcome video and the line Yellow Nation already knew was coming: Wandile is yellow.
Dube is a left-footed centre-back who can also play left-back. Born 18 August 2004, he came through Usuthu’s DStv Diski Challenge side.
He was promoted to the first team last season, and made 10 appearances as AmaZulu finished fourth in the Betway Premiership. Limited minutes. Big reputation. Arthur Zwane even called him “a rare breed.”
The transfer window closes on Tuesday. Sundowns got him over the line — a straight transfer on an initial three-year deal after late talks and a Johannesburg medical.
He has already reported for training at Chloorkop. That makes him Sundowns’ seventh signing of the window, after Antonio van Wyk, Deano van Rooyen, Cassius Mailula, Thabo Cele, Thabang Matuludi and Siyanda Ndlovu.
The backstory is why this one stung for rivals. Contract talks with AmaZulu stalled. Usuthu faced losing him for nothing at season’s end, so they sold late.
Orlando Pirates had been sniffing around. Sundowns jumped the queue. The club video sells the move as a rite of passage: gym grind, yellow kit, a welcome from the Yellow Army.
Dube’s own line is simple: “My name is Wandile Dube.” Sundowns’ reply is simpler: the committed built this place — now you’re in it.
For Miguel Cardoso, it is depth for a squad stretched across league, Africa and the international calendar.
For Dube, it is the biggest dressing room in the country. Yellow Nation has a new defender.
