Rulani Mokwena was reportedly earning less than Manqoba Mngqithi when he joined Mamelodi Sundowns in 2020 as Pitso Maimane’s assistant coach.
HOW MUCH WAS RULANI MOKWENA EARNING?
Rulani Mokwena’s contract reveals that his salary was R180 000 per month when he joined Mamelodi Sundowns on 1 July 2020, according to Sunday World.
Mokwena was reportedly earning R200 000 less than Mngqithi, who earned R380 000 per month in the same period as assistant coach.
The publication adds that Sundowns paid Mokwena R180 000 per month and also paid him a signing-on fee of R720 000.
“As remuneration for the services to be rendered by the employee in terms of this agreement, the club shall pay to the employee, on the last business day of each month.
“The employee shall earn an annual gross remuneration package of R2 880 000 for the period 1 July 2020 to 30 June 2021, payable as follows: a gross monthly salary of R180 000 for the period 1 July 2020 to 30 June 2021; and a signing-on fee of R720 000 payable on or before 31 July 2020; thereafter, the remuneration package shall be adjusted annually according to CPI on each anniversary date,” reads the contract.
It is reported his contract further stipulated that the club would pay Mokwena a net performance bonus of between R5000 and R8000 in respect of each game won by the club but would still deduct PAYE taxes from it.
The contract does not state whether Mokwena’s salary was hiked when he got promoted as Mamelodi Sundowns’ head coach after Mosimane’s exit.
It is reported Mngqithi is currently earning R440 000 per month after the club increased his salary twice over the past two seasons.
MAMELODI SUNDOWNS: CONTRACT EXTENDED
The football club announced in June 2023 that Rulani Mokwena has signed a 4-year contract extension that will see him remain at Mamelodi Sundowns until 2027.
“Coach Rulani, who was appointed as the Head Coach in October has had a very solid and impressive run which includes being undefeated in the CAF Champions League and DStv Premiership since he took over the reins,” adds the football club.

MANQOBA MNGQITHI SALARY?
The publication also reports that Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Manqoba Mngqithi is currently earning a gross salary of R440 000 a month.
Mngqithi reportedly signed a 48-month contract with the football club from 1 July 2020 which expires at the end of this month (June 2024).
He reportedly earned a gross salary of R380 000 in the first 12 months of the contract. His salary increased by R20 000 after every season.
“As remuneration for the services to be rendered by the employee in terms of this agreement, the club shall pay to the employee, on the last business day of each month, a monthly gross salary of R380 000 (three hundred and eighty thousand rands) for the period 1 July 2020 to 30 June 2021.”
“R400 000 (four hundred thousand rands) for the period 1 July 2021 to 30 June 2022; R420 000 (four hundred and twenty thousand rands) for the period 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023; and R440 000 (four hundred and forty thousand rands) for the period 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2024,” reads the contract.
The South African reached out to Mamelodi Sundowns for a comment on Sunday, 23 June.
