Mamelodi Sundowns are taking bold steps to stay ahead of the curve — and this time, they’ve looked to Germany for inspiration.
The Betway Premiership giants have sent club legend Surprise Moriri to RB Leipzig for an intensive learning experience focused on player development and cutting-edge technology.
Moriri was recently appointed as the Chloorkop based side’s technical director. He recently toured Leipzig’s state-of-the-art facilities, where he got a firsthand look at how one of Europe’s most progressive clubs shapes elite talent.
From data-driven analysis to specialised technical training zones, Leipzig’s model is built on precision, innovation and long-term planning.
“Today we saw how they develop players technically,” Moriri said. “They have a technological area where they make sure players improve their skills at a very high level.”
Leipzig’s system has already produced some of world football’s brightest stars, including Josko Gvardiol, Christopher Nkunku, Dominik Szoboszlai, Benjamin Sesko and Dayot Upamecano — players who have gone on to shine on the biggest stages.
For Sundowns, this is more than just a visit. It’s a clear statement of intent. The Brazilians are aligning themselves with European and Bundesliga standards, aiming to elevate their own structures and remain dominant both locally and on the continent.
And fans won’t have to wait long to see the connection come full circle.
Sundowns and Leipzig are set to face off in an exciting friendly match at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville, Pretoria, on 29 May — a clash that promises to showcase two clubs united by ambition and innovation.
