Suliman Carrim Returns To Court On Monday For Bail Application
North West businessman and former ANC regional treasurer Suliman Carrim is expected to return to the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 19 October 2026, for the continuation of his bail application after being arrested at OR Tambo International Airport.
Carrim, 49, was arrested on Thursday evening, 15 October, by the South African Police Service’s Commission Recommendations Task Team as he was preparing to board an international flight to Dubai. He faces a charge of contravening the Commissions Act after allegedly failing to return to the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry to complete his testimony and provide requested information and documents.
The commission’s chairperson, retired Deputy Chief Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, had directed Carrim to appear in person on 14 August after he missed several scheduled appearances, citing medical reasons. Following his failure to appear, the commission laid criminal charges against him.
During Friday’s bail proceedings, the State opposed his release, arguing that he could evade trial. Investigators raised concerns about his travel arrangements, including a disputed return ticket, and the verification of his residential addresses. The court also heard that Carrim was travelling with five bags.
Carrim denied being a flight risk, telling the court that he intended to travel to Saudi Arabia for religious purposes via Dubai. His legal representative, Advocate Hendrik Potgieter, argued against keeping him in custody, citing his reported heart condition and anxiety.
The State requested additional time to verify the information and documents submitted by the defence, including Carrim’s travel arrangements and residential addresses. The court postponed the bail application to Monday.
Carrim remains in custody at Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Facility pending the continuation of the proceedings.
Police have also confirmed that Carrim was flagged in connection with separate fraud and corruption investigations relating to the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality in North West. Those allegations remain under investigation and are separate from the charge currently before the court.
