FREE STATE – The police in the Free State took the fight against drugs directly to the perpetrators in Heidedal in Bloemfontein and Bronville in the Gold Fields area, after the community raised their concerns. On Thursday, 12 December 2024, at 11:00, members of the Free State Provincial Organised Crime Unit, Crime Intelligence, Provincial Serious and Violent Crime Unit, TRT, and Welkom K9 Unit conducted two simultaneous multidisciplinary takedown operations in Bronville (Welkom) and Heidedal, Bloemfontein. The operations stemmed from Project Daily Sun, which was initiated in July 2022 to combat illicit drug dealing in the Welkom and Bloemfontein areas. In Bronville, five transactions were conducted by an undercover agent targeting an identified suspect. A 31-year-old suspect was arrested in possession of 383 mandrax tablets with an estimated street value of R9,500. In Heidedal, five transactions were conducted by an undercover agent, two of which targeted a runner working for the main suspect. The target (45) and runner (39) were arrested for dealing in drugs, with a third suspect (39) later arrested for possession of drugs. Police seized mandrax, crystal meth and cellphones. The suspects will be processed and charged with dealing in drugs and possession of drugs. They are scheduled to appear in the Welkom and Bloemfontein Magistrate Courts soon. “The success of Project Daily Sun demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated, multidisciplinary efforts in addressing organised crime and drug trafficking in the Free State. The South African Police Service (SAPS) remains committed to rooting out drug-related criminal activities and ensuring safer communities,” said the Provincial Commissioner of the police in the Free State, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane.
