Media Statement PARKTOWN – The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Ekurhuleni District conducted a successful illegal mining operation, “Vala Umgodi”, in the Crystal Park policing precinct on Friday, 12 July 2024. During the operation, a total of 54 arrests were made, including 47 illegal immigrants, six for illegal mining, according to Mineral Act 20 of 1991, and one suspect for bribery. Additionally, various items were seized, including: Gold bearing material bags, phendukas, crush pots, stumping steels, shovels, generators, wheelbarrows, oxygen cylinders, motors, steel balls, spades, steel stampers, gas bottles, cutting torch, steel pots, liquor and R2000. The police will continue to address illegal mining activities, which pose danger to the community. Ends
