Media Statement BLOEMSPRUIT – A stepfather was sentenced to life imprisonment for raping his 16-year-old stepdaughter, infecting her with HIV. It was revealed during the trial that the victim claimed she had been sexually molested by her stepfather in 2020 while living in a shanty in Bloemspruit with her mother, younger sister, and stepfather. The alleged incident occurred during the night while the victim’s mother was hospitalized. The victim subsequently tested positive for HIV after she fell ill thinking she was pregnant and was sent to stay with a cousin in Sasolburg. The victim revealed the alleged assault to a family member when visiting them, and the incident was reported to the Sasolburg police station. The case was brought to the Mangaung Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit and investigated by Sergeant Makhetha, who was working closely with the National Prosecuting Authority, Advocate Cwele. The 40-year-old stepfather was sentenced to life imprisonment for the brutal rape.
