State to call new witness in Cat Matlala trial
A new state witness is expected in court today in the trial-within-a-trial against Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and four co-accused.
Matlala, Tsakane Matlala, Musa Kekana, Tiego Mabusela and Nthabiseng Nzama face 25 charges, including attempted murder and conspiracy, linked to alleged botched hits on Joe Sibanyoni, Tebogo Thobejane and Seunkie Mokubung. They have pleaded not guilty.
The main trial is on hold while the court decides whether evidence obtained during Kekana’s April 2024 arrest is admissible. His defence is challenging the lawfulness of his arrest.
Last week’s proceedings were postponed after the next witness was unavailable. The State is expected to call Colonel Owen King, who was the Bramley police station commander at the time of Kekana’s arrest.
The State hopes to wrap up this phase of the trial this week.
