Media Statement KIMBERLEY – The Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing, Major General Johnny Besnaar, officially opened the Sport Is Your Future tournament at the Renown sports grounds, Bloemanda in Kimberley on Friday, 07 March 2025. SAPS Provincial Heads, Station Commanders, within the greater Kimberley area, SAPS members, Provincial Police Board, Community Policing Structures, Heads and representatives from government departments and NGO’s, sports participants, athletes, youth and the broader community attended the ‘Sport Is Your Future’ tournament. The day commenced at 06:30 with a 5km run, led by athletes from the Northern Cape SAPS Marathon Club. The opening devotion was delivered by Chaplain Tshepo Shupinyaneng and the welcoming address by the Ward Councillor, Cllr Rosemary Riet. The purpose of the day was outlined by the Provincial Head for Pro Active Policing, Brigadier Irene Kopeledi. Several messages of support and motivational talks bordering on the dangers of substance abuse were delivered by the SAPS Women’s Network, Department of Social Development, Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, Department of Transport, Safety and Liaison, NGO’s and the Community Police Forum. In the Keynote address, Major General Johnny Besnaar reiterated that the aim of the tournament is to reach out to substance abusers, especially youth, who feel rejected by communities and requested support for the youth and their families and link them with services available to assist them to abandon the abuse of substances. SAPS also had a Mobile Community Service Centre readily available to register cases and do certification and affidavits. Major General Besnaar mentioned that this is partnership policing and collective crime fighting at its best and that the initiative demonstrates the power of sports and brings real social cohesion and sports development is imperative to help change the current crime narative across the Northern Cape. The programme concluded with the vote of thanks by the Station Commander of Kimberley SAPS, Brigadier Nicky Mtongana. The second phase concluded with all the attendees who participated in road running, aerobics, soccer and netball receiving medals. Trophies were also handed over to overall winners by General Besnaar. Ends
